I sure hope he was telling you the truth... you should have demanded he go down, take a picture of one and show you :D

Hopefully they'll definitely be shipping by the 15th *fingers crossed*

Just curious...anybody order from another on line vender (somewhere other than the Apple store)? And if so, from where and what is your shipping estimate?

A random $122.96 charge from Apple just showed up on my account....can this mean anything?

No charges on my account yet...

When I first ordered, Apple placed a 'hold' on my account for the amount of the MBP. They then released that hold a couple of days later. (That's normal, they verify that the money's there, then drop the hold until it ships.)

No new holds yet, though.

yeah same here...but this is really out of the blue...

So do we know if the Core Duo is in a socket or is it soldered to the motherboard?

If the chip can be removed and replaced, would heat then be an issue? Last time I checked the Core Due 2.1GHz (mobile) was going for at least $700 US.

Ef that.

Yes because it will always be $700 even 6 months from now when Merom is the CPU of choice. Speaking of which Merom and Core Duo share the same chipset, socket, and will run cooler then the Core Cuo.

sorry if I'm completely wrong lol, but does this mean that there may be the ability to swap out the Core Duo chip in the MBP's for a Merom chip?

Interesting. Do you have a link where we can read more. That would be pretty sweet.

Unknown if Merom will be drop-in compatible. In the past, Intel chip upgrades have required at LEAST a new firmware, and at worst, new power controllers. (For example, there were four revisions of Intel's desktop motherboard, the 'Seattle', each supporting newer and newer chips.)

Knowing Apple, they probably wouldn't put any engineering effort into putting Merom support into the rev.a MacBook Pro. And since the iMac has a socketed processor, it is likely that the MBP will, too. (Why would Apple add the EXTRA manufacturing step of soldering it in?)

So I doubt Merom will work in rev.a iMacs and MBPs. Most likely, Apple will use Merom's release to release the rev.b of each.

And if I can get a Core Duo T2600 (2.13GHz) cheaply enough, I will certainly see if the MBP supports it. (And post the graphic disassembly photos.) (I recently upgraded an el-cheapo Compaq work laptop from a Celeron-M 1.4GHz to a Pentium-M 780 (2.26GHz) because I got the Pentium-M dirt cheap. when my MBP arrives, I'll be checking my source for a cheap Core Duo.)

Dude, I took the plunge: Rev A, here I come!

Just ordered a dual 1.83Ghz with a 1GB stick and 120GB 5400RPM HD. Estimated Delivery: March 7th ....

On 2/7 I ordered the 1.67 with the only change of adding the 7200rpm hard drive.

Shipping 2/28
Receive by 3/7

Get this! I'm so greedy and unfrugal (if that can be a word) that I sold my iMac 20" 2.0 1gig 250 Gig for 1150 and placed the order for the MBP. I just gotta go portable again, and I've always wanted a "Powerbook". Now THIS is what I call a "PowerBook update" !! Woo hoo! I'm Macless in the meantime though...first time in years, yuck!

Yeah, I have been computerless for some time now. I have not had a computer in a few weeks. I really miss it. I did a really GREAT UPGRADE! Sold my Dell for 750 and then got my MBP for ... A lot. But the switch was well worth it.

I just gotta say that if you plan on using this MBP for photoshop and Illustrator right away then I think that you may be a little dissapointed. From what I have heard in the iMac Core Duo threads using photoshop non-Universal is pretty brutal... but even with Rossetta you might be better off then with the PB that I have ;) I guess that we will have to see.

Im not worried about it I would rather move forward with new hardware. I have used a PB 12" with 512 for a few weeks and had a 15" PB from my last job.The 12" seems to be ok just can run multiple apps. PS is a ram hog. I am ordering the 1.8 with 2 gigs of ram and the 7200 rpm drive. I run lots of other apps too not just PS. Also most of my work is web graphics so no huge file sizes unless I start to build up tons of layers. I think I will take my chances. I used to use a G3, and before that a PowerPC 7100/80, and before that a Quadra and before that an FX and before that a CI and before that an SE, before that an Apple II, before that pen and ink. I can deal with slow.

I got Apple to do an even exchange on my broken 17" PowerBook for a 1.83 Ghz Mac Book Pro. :D That's what I call cupping the customer support balls.

I've heard of other people getting deals like this... how do you manage it? What was wrong with your PowerBook? How many times had it been in for repair? Did they suggest the deal or did you ask for it?

How'd you pull that off? You need to share that kind of skill with the rest of us mere mortals.

They have had my PowerBook since the beginning of January- It was locking up all the time. At the end of January they still have no ETA on when I would be getting it back, or when they were getting parts, so I started complaining.

Originally they were just going to give me another refurbished 17" PowerBook that was the same as what I had... but I told them I didn't want a refurb, as I'd taken immaculate care of my PowerBook and didn't want someone else's computer. At this point they offered me a new 17" PowerBook with the higher resolution display. I told them I didn't want another PPC computer, and them having my PowerBook for so long was really messing up me selling my 17" PowerBook to buy a Mac Book.

I purchase a ton of junk from Apple (see signature) so as soon as I started telling them how unhappy I was with their service and that the new ThinkPads are looking pretty nice the customer support lead I was talking to did an even exchange for a fully loaded Mac Book... from my year old out-of-warranty 17" PowerBook. :D

I just cancelled

After waiting 9 days (Yes, I know many of you have waited longer) I decided to cancel my the order on my 1.67/80/1GB MBP.

That's good news for anyone who ordered after me, but I think it's good news for me, too. See, I wish the Superdrive were DL, someone told me the iSight is different for the MBP. (Something about the iMac one having 2 CCDs and the MacBook using CMOS????) Also, I want to wait for Merom and I want to see (which I highly doubt) if Rev A has any problems.

Has anyone else cancelled their order? I'd like to know why you did.

Yeah, I'm waiting for G5 PowerBooks, myself.

Next tuesday, my friend. Next tuesday.

That aside, I still haven't ordered yet, but I will. Do you guys think I'll get it faster if I order now via online, or if I wait until they come into the stores and buy it there?

If you show up before the stores open everyday from Feb 15th until the MBPs arrive, that would be faster. But, odds are, the store's entire lot of MBPs will be sold out within an hour of the store opening. (On the day it gets them.)

You might want to try local 'Apple Authorized Reseller's, to see if they have waiting lists or anything you can get on. AARs usually get product a day to a week after the real Apple Stores, (despite Apple corporate claiming they don't play favorites,) but can often have shorter waiting lists. I got a nano the day they became available in stores because a local AAR had a bunch in stock, while all of the local Apple Stores had sold out within an hour of opening.

You may have to call a few different AARs, though.

Well it's now after midnight in the UK so today is the day my MacBook is supposed to ship. Hopefully, when I wake up in about 10 hours (I'm not going to sleep just yet) I will have the shipment email.

However, I'm not very optimistic that it will ship today after they delayed the last ship date.

I hope for your sake (and ours) that it does ship! Let us know what happens.

A CMOS sensor in an iSight. That's interesting considering that only Canon uses this.

While the vast majority of webcams use CCDs, some high end ones use CMOS sensors. (A couple Creative models, the 'WebCam Live' and 'WebCam Instant' use CMOS sensors.) Likewise, most high end 'prosumer' digital still cameras use CMOS sensors (Nikon, Sony, Canon...)

And from the start, Apple has always advertised that the iSight uses CCDs. (See the Internet Archive's first page on the iSight.) It's the iMac that moved to using a CMOS sensor. (Supposedly. I can't find any verification from Apple on this, only a few reviews that mention it.)

OK well I have some really bad news. Mine was supposed to ship today and I called Apple up and they have just told me it might not ship until March! My status on the website has just been changed from 10th Feb to 10th Mar!!!!!

The woman I spoke to said it was in manufacturing and mine would go out in the first batch. She said it might ship on the 15th Feb but she can't guarantee it. I told her I was annoyed because on the 7th I was told the delay would be a couple of days and now it's a whole month but she just kept saying it was an estimate and they couldn't do anything. She said mine would definitely be in the first batch sent out... which means all orders could be delayed until March.
