Ok i think people are now just excited about Apple releasing a product more than the actual product itself.

37 Minutes More Battery Time • 2.6 Hours Vs 2 Hours • 25%+ More Battery Life

well, to a degree... if you look closely, they're comparing a:

Final Release of Merom T7600 @ 2.33GHz
Eng. Sample of Merom T7400 @ 2.16GHz
Final Release of Yonah T2600 @ 2.16GHz

why not compare the chips with the same frequency?
Because there was only a very expensive recently released 2.33GHz Yonah nobody used. This is a totally fair real world comparison.
epitaphic said:
the only thing we can take from this benchmark is that the merom that runs at slightly faster frequency (2.33) than the yonah (2.16) manages to be 2.3% cooler. clock for clock that probably means the merom is 2.5% cooler than the yonah.

another 5 minutes of battery life! happy happy joy joy!
157-120 = 37 minutes more battery life. happy happy joy joy!

Any progress is progress. Cooler is COOLER man. Faster is FASTER. Longer Battery Life is LONGER BATTERY LIFE. I prefer to see the glass half full rather than half empty. :D

anyone that's dying for a merom mac, buy a 2.16 yonah instead of a 2.0 and turn down the brightness a notch.

there. its like magic. wow the progress!

of course its a tiny bit faster and consumes a tiny bit less energy, but c'mon, wetting your pants waiting for this new chip is a bit silly. mobile performance will only be a real step up in 2008.

Perhaps. But I am buying that new product (MBP.) It's my first new computer in nearly four years, so I think I'm entitled to get a little excited about it. :D

So, everyone should wait until 2008? Be my guest.

It's been said before, but oh well. Many here who are waiting to buy the new chip have no problem waiting a few more days or a few more weeks. Why not get more for our money by waiting for a new upgrade, the possibility of a swappable HDD, 64-bit architecture, etc.? Simply, that just makes sense.

What doesn't make sense is running out and buying a yonah system knowing that even a slight upgrade is soon coming. For those of us who are waiting, knowing that the merom macs are just about to be released, it just seems plain ignorant to buy the previous model system (unless meroms burst into flames or something.)

And by 2008, I may be ready to go ahead and take that step up for mobile performance. What ever that may be.

You're missing the point. Earlier articles were saying that it would run hotter and consume more power, which made a lot of potential buyers consider getting the Yonah while they could. Now we are hearing that there's no drawback to Merom. That's big news (for me at least). :)

I don't really care about the difference in performance. I'm waiting because its 64 bit. That doesn't mean much now, but this laptop needs to last me a good 3-5 years.

Waiting time

so, not today......

we waited for wwdc, we waited for today, we 'll wait for tomorrow, we 'll wait for 5th sept; we 'll wait for non-existing expo paris keynote;and we 'll wait for the ipod deal goes off......

AND THIS IS FOR YOU USA GUYS.....because i 'll wait 2more weeks(after the realese for you) to merom mpb come to portugal and then i will wait 2 more weeks to get my ands on mine........will be a great chistmas present....

That's what people do for a laptop with a half eaten apple on top.............................................................

this will be my first mac too...i cant wait...but i am still thinking it wont be until september 5th...but ya never know with apple!

That's why I'd rather buy one from the local store or online (standard, without any changes). It's hard to shell out $3K for your first MAC without the option of returning it.

But it sounds like you ordered a custom configuration...if that's the case how are you planning to return it?

Wow. Dell and HP already have Core 2 Duo. I was expecting that apple would get it first. But from the ads annouced lastnight, I don't think we will see MacBook Pros or any updates for that matter for another 2 weeks.

They already have it announced and available to order. But are they shipping immediately, or how long a wait is it until you can get your hands on one?

It's the fact that the other manufacturers announced their own Core 2 Duo systems that makes it exciting, and frustrating for some who want Apple to announce their own line of C2D machines.

I'm not frustrated. I'm just anxious to hear/read Apple's announcement. Whether you can get them now or later is immaterial for most people. They just want that announcement. But I believe it's soon coming.

Dell won't ship til Sept 19th
Alienware won't ship til Sept 12th
Toshiba won't ship til probably Sept 11th
(according to Apple Insider)

Apple will be in the same boat.

Without stock, an announcement will create a mini Osborne effect for the time in between. If you ran Apple, WWYD?

interchangeable?

I thought I read somewhere that those of us that own the new Macbooks will be able to purchase this new chip and swap it out ourselves... is this true?

Not macbooks or pros. The chips are soldered into the logicboard, so unless you're really, really good at soldering, you can't swap chips.

If I don't open the box, I can ship it back. In the meantime, I could purchase one from the Apple store and have 14 days since it's not a BTO.

Sheesh, this gets asked over and over and people never seem to get it right.

The iMac, mini, and Mac Pro have socketed chips, meaning they can be swapped.

The laptops have soldered chips meaning they can not.

Wrong.

"Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized product may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless DOA."

http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/salespolicies.html

So what does this statement mean?

If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product. Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized product may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless DOA. If the item is returned unopened in the original box, we will exchange it or offer you a refund based on your original method of payment.

It's a little confusing. I guess that statement is talking about non personalized products. I'll call them to double-check. If you are right, I'll just refuse the shipment. To me it says if its a personalized product and you open it and it's NOT DOA, you can't return it. But if you don't open it, you can.

I thought Multimedia mentioned in a previous thread that you can return it.

What do you mean you'll refuse the shipment? You'll still get charged for it, whether you allow delivery or not. I think the safe assumption is that you can return unopened items with no fee as long as they aren't custom orders. "Under any circumstances" isn't really open to interpretation, is it? And do you really think they'd be OK with going to the trouble of customizing a box, then letting the buyer return it with no penalty? Especially when customizing includes things like engraving on iPods.

Looks like you're stuck with your order. Should have checked their terms before ordering.

Very, very, interesting!!!

I'm on the phone with Customer Support now to process the return. He asked me, "So do you want to return it to take advantages of the new Pentium processor?" I told his yes. I'm on hold now while he talks to a manager. OK, done.

Milo is right, that is the policy. I misunderstood it. But Apple said that I can still return it, but I have to pay for shipping and a 10% restocking fee. Ouch!! So, now, I either keep it, sell it on Ebay, or swallow the $350+. First lesson learned. Anyone want to buy a MBP?

If I had understood that from the start, I would have just went to the local store so that I could have 14 days to test all my MSFT apps.

Wow. It's so obivious that even customer support knows about the C2D now. That's incredibly encouraging! :)
