What are you people whining about! Like has been said a million times on here, DOWNLOAD IT OFF THE AMERICAN STORE! IT WORKS PERFECTLY IN CANADA. It's not Apple's or Rogers fault that someone has a patent on it in Canada.

I am wondering if it isn't a patent problem but infact the enhanced 911 rules that VOIP phones must follow in Canada. The CRTC started enforcing that VOIP phones dial 911 in the same way all landline phones and cell phones do and go directly to the nearest 911 center.

But yea, search around the net and you will find it (watch for safari adding a .zip to the end of the .ipa file). Or use the american store if you have a gift certificate.

And how are we supposed to make a American account? Don't we need credit card with a USA billing address?

edit: forget about it, the 1st generation iPod touch doesn't support voice recording anyway.

Skype Get it right

Can't believe a company would launch a program in the APP store and not get the sign up RIGHT, wanted to sign up for the monthly $2.99 and it takes to some Chinese web-site 0 points Skype from me.:mad:

Not for free apps you don't. Just make an account with a fake American address. It takes all of 30 seconds. I've downloaded countless "America only" apps this way.

Google for Skype-v1.0.1.ipa find the file, drag it into your itunes and add the applications that way.

Rogers said they had no problem allowing it. It wasn't released due to a patent that someone owns in canada (I'm guessing it is how to handle VOIP phonecalls on a portable device or some stupid broad patent). I downloaded the .ipa file and added it to my iphone that way and it works fine on rogers.

I've downloaded the ipa but don't know quite how to install it. The file is not actually called skype.ipa.

Help?

when it works, it works great, but it does tend to crash a lil bit.

Probably has to do something with jailbreaking leading to instability, because i used it fine prior to the break.

Is anyone else having sound issues after running the app. My speaker/headphones are cutting in and out. (ie. lock clicks, keyboard clicks, ipod library.) This is an awful bug.

I'm not sure, but I think only the 2nd gen iPod touch supports external mics officially.

After I restarted my iPod touch I got it to work with the iPhone headphones.

However, I am using a newer version of the iPod OS that is due later this summer ;) and this is constantly crashing or locking up. Oh well, that's what I get.

Yes. I am. I was thinking it was because I was using a different version of the OS.

Looks like Skype disconnects once iPhone goes in to sleeper mode. Doesn't it beat the whole purpose to begin with?

It does. I locked my iPod touch to turn off the screen and the call was instantly disconnected.

I think this is a major flaw in Skype app. Every thing else, loving it so far.

Fring stays connected in sleeper mode. Fring even runs if you are on a call (cellular call) and lets you chat over wifi.

Yeah my gf and I just installed Skype and were gutted to realise that we can't call each other unless we are signed in and on the Skype app.. I mean.. it's useless..

We actually have to text/call each other first to say, lets chat on Skype.. wow, horrible.

Looking up this Fring app..

Whoops forgot to mention you needed to be Jailbroken to do it that way. Just create an American account (find some random address and select none for payment type) if you want it on an un-jailbroken phone.

Hopefully this gets addressed with Push Notification Service.. In theory, an incoming call should "wake" Skype up and pop up a notification that you have an incoming call coming. I don't know whether all this can happen fast enough to be useable..

I'd like to download it in the US store but I don't have any adress in USA... I can't use a canadian adress for the billing information!

HELP?

EDIT: Ho wow, that was too easy, thanks for the hints guys! Payment option: NONE!

so i undid my jailbreak, and everything works fine...

...sadly a phone without winterboard seems a little off.

Yet I use Skype everyday, so I rather lose jailbreak options. Makes you wonder if it was made on purpose to not work so well on jailbroken phones?

Yep, just did this. Followed instructions on another site, works perfectly. I updated MobileSubstrate this morning, anticipating that Skype would eventually come. But I had to take it into my own hands.

Now to get voipover3g!

on a 2g it crashes and the voice quality sucks.

I have used Skype for a number of years, so I was excited to see it available on my Iphone 2g. The installation crashed several times, but I was finally able to get online and call someone. Lets just say that the voice quality sucks and I will not be using it.
