As far as I know there is no way to bypass the maze. You just have to complete the whole thing. It took me about 7 hours or so to complete the whole Adventure mode, good luck. My hands still ache from that horrid maze. :p

The maze ain't that bad it just seems like a big hassle cause it takes up half the game. The maze part isn't even a maze cause it gives you a map and you know exactly know where to go. It's like a lame Castlevania (post-SotN). They should've made it shorter, cause the cut scenes were pretty cool, but the gameplay was boring. I did enjoy the barrel cannons reminiscent of DKC. They really need to make a new one...

Took me a while to figure it out too. Just press B if you're using the Gamecube controller, but I think you have to actually hold it down for a second or two. Works fine for me. :)

Is it just B? I usually press A+B together, and it works. It's funny how we all have the game but don't bother to look in the manual. I flipped through it quickly while waiting for a game to start.

or if you don't like spending $80 for a controller

Circuit City had Nintendo branded GCN wired controllers for $12.99, and Madcatz branded wireless GCN controllers (get the full sized 440, not the micro no vibration 330) for $19.99

Gamestop has some online, luck may vary in store, and ebay is a ripoff so don't bother looking there.

If you are seeing $80 for GCN controllers then you need to look a bit harder.

Having a GCN controller makes all the difference in playing, the next best thing may be a Classic controller but even that felt strange compared to a GCN controller. Using the wiimote or wiimote + nunchuck was pretty much unplayable, or at least highly unenjoyable.

You sound like quite the authority, Ed, for one who plays like you do. Or shall I post the four matches with four stock during which you never landed a kill on me? :D

Regardless, ed is completely right. Even brand name nintendo controllers are $25 and by far the best control scheme.

80 dollars?

well, if you have to buy a wiimote and nunchuck. you do the math. aren't they $40 each?

what is GCN? gamecube controller? i don't know, why would i want to buy a controller that i can't use for all my games on my wii?

$60, Wiimote is $40, nunchuck is $20....

Or you can buy WiiPlay with the bundled Wiimote and get a few extra minigames, for only $10 more, (it's been rumored that some have sold the game disk for more than $10 to offset the Wiimote cost).

Nunchucks are $20. Total for both is $60. Regardless, since your Wii came with a Wii remote and nunchuck, you can play with that.

GameCube controller is the best scheme by far, though I've seen people get pretty decent with Wiimote/nunchuck. Classic controller is okay, Wii remote alone is more of a challenge than the game.

Get a Nintendo-branded wired GameCube controller for $25 new. Works great.

More importantly, the GameCube can replace the classic controller- you can use it for SNES and N64 Virtual Console games, and games like Fire Emblem and Mario Kart on the Wii. And if you buy a GCN controller and GCN memory card you can get old GameCube games, like The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker, that no one should be without.

I was under the inpression that the N64 Virtual Console games used the Classic Controller and not the GCN controller. Can they use both or does it vary between games.

oh ok. thanks for the tip. i have already bought WiiPlay for the controller, and the game also

what does GCN stand for again? (sorry, i never had a gamecube)

i'm just not sure of spending $25 + tax on a controller that i can't use with all my Wii games

what does GCN stand for again? (sorry, i never had a gamecube)

It just means Gamecube. Kind of a weird acronym, isn't it?

Actually, it stands for: Nintendo GameCube. Now, you would think that it would be NGC...and, in fact, that was the acronym used until Nintendo made GCN official. Why Nintendo Japan placed the "N" after the "GC" is up for debate. Maybe to emphasise the "GC" for GameCube?

maybe its just me, but I can't figure out how to use the Final Smash attack? I can get the Final Smash and glow, but I can't do activate it!! What buttons do you press for it?(Gamecube controller)

It's not just you... I haven't been able to activate one yet... but I've been the victim plenty of times... I've been playing with Wiimote/Nunchuck but since I've never had a GCN controller I don't think I'm going to start now.

I'll have to play around sometime and figure out how to get it all to work for me. I'm currently too close to 100+% completion in SMG so I'm a bit distracted and when not playing some close friends online for practice I'm working on that...

You will not regret getting the gamecube controller. I've used all four controllers "schemes" and the cube controller is by far the best and easiest to be a decent player with. The classic is second best. Your combo is by far the worse.

thanks for explaining to me guys. :)

All gaming purchases have to go through my budget manager (the wife) and thus the extra cash for a controller I'll most likely only use for one game is not really an option when that money can go towards other things. I have a classic controller, but for the little I've played I'm currently used to the Wiimote/Nunchuck combo. Is it the best? Probably not. Is it currently the best for me? Yes. Will I be better on another controller scheme? Maybe.

Once I have more time to play I'll play around with the other schemes and see if one suits me better, but since this is the first Smash Bros. game I've ever played I have zero point of reference and whatever controller scheme cements itself in my brain first will probably always be the best for me.

Just got this yesterday and played for the 1st time. So far a pretty fun game, I played for about 40 minutes and am just trying to get the hang of everything. What are some of the best characters people like to use? So far I have just tried Mario and Kirby. just curious what other people like to use

So far I'm a big fan of Pitt, Sheik, Ike, and Meta Knight, although I do OK* with Kirby, Pikachu, Samus, and Mario.

*by OK I mean I suck less with these characters than I do with others.

Wii remote and nunchuck is much better than Wii remote alone.

You're going to need the controller anyway for playing Virtual Console games greater than NES, and it works for Mario Kart and is required for Fire Emblem.

Balancing is extremely good in Smash Bros games, generally, there's no "best character" (though the hardcore guys tend to separate them into tiers).

Mario, Luigi, and Kirby are probably the most newbie-friendly characters. I personally greatly prefer Luigi to Mario. Luigi's neutral and back air attacks have ridiculously broad ranges, his up B on the ground is absolutely nasty if you are touching the other player when you use it (great for someone who roll a lot like me), and you can use his forward-B for recovery quite well.

My best character is Peach. She's very good, but be warned that she is extremely hard to get the hang of.

Shiek...don't get me started. She was my second-best character in Melee, but she's absolutely horrible now. However, Zelda has been vastly improved to the point of being ridiculously good in comparison.

Pikachu and Pit are the "cheapest" characters in the sense that both have moves that can be very easily spammed (Pikachu's down-B and down-Smash, Pit's forward B), and Pit essentially cannot die through suicide or falling since he can jump like four times then glide THEN fly with up-B. But I've got pretty good at learning counters to all of the spammable moves to take out the noobs.

MetaKnight is fun.

My top characters are probably:
Peach
Ike
Marth
Toon Link
Luigi
Snake
Pit
MetaKnight

Note that I consider Marth to be a better character than Ike but I have all kinds of cheap tricks I use with him. Marth's also probably a superior character to Peach but I've developed some absolutely vicious Peach strategies that I don't want to give up- though I'm saddened by the inability of Peach to aggressively edgeguard (nothing is more fun than chasing an opponent off a cliff to force them down).

Snake I'm slowly improving on. I love playing him. Toon Link is great but I need more practice.

And note how they are two of my favorites at the moment...:D

Pit essentially cannot die through suicide or falling since he can jump like four times then glide THEN fly with up-B.

You would think that but somehow I still manage to kill myself at least once or twice every match with him...:D

Of course Pit is the only player I did an entire Brawl run with (he was the first character I tried). Most others I've only got one or two matches on so it's tough to actually have an informed opinion at the moment.

I'm pretty sure it was because of NGC was already taken, I believe by Neo Geo Color... That's why they couldn't use it. Not a Japanese Translation thing. NOA would've used NGC if they could. Either way it doesn't matter.

The maze ain't that bad it just seems like a big hassle cause it takes up half the game.

I finally started the maze two nights ago, and should finish it tonight. I actually think it's one of the most enjoyable parts of the game while the cutscenes are fun, some of the levels were way to short in between cutscenes. The maze feels like a regular (albeit somewhat long) platformer level. With the warping save points it's not that hard to get around. I would have probably finished it last night but I have four more "boss doors" to go and it was already almost midnight...

Can you bring up the map anytime in the maze using the start button (+ or - I'm not sure)? That might have saved me a lot of time so far since I was only aware of the map at the save points and kept going back to figure out where to go next.
