I'm getting

"Oops...

A server with the specified hostname could not be found."

Anybody else? Server just overloaded?

Yeah, getting the same message on my iPhone 4, and a similar "can't find host" message on my iPad. I updated my iPad to 3.2.1 and lost Cydia, but now the host seems to be down for the new Jailbreak. Oh well.

This is totally awesome! It worked like a charm (including carrier unlock which was the main reason I needed the jailbreak) on my 3GS running 4.0.1 and 05.13.04.

I thought I was totally screwed when blackra1n wouldn't boot anymore, and I later had upgraded to iOS 4.0.1 which made my carrier-locked iPhone totally useless. This saved my day! (and a lot of days ahead) Just donated $5.00, I was that happy :)

If you get stuck on the purple screen, clear cache/cookies and try jailbreakme.modmyi.com, that worked for me since the original URL didn't.
(sorry if this was posted already, going 35 pages deep)

If I have an ipod touch 2g, is there any point in jailbreaking if all I want is homescreen backgrounds & multi-tasking? Or is having those two things enabled on a 2g, just too slow?

If you don't understand the benefits, then of course you don't see the point.

Im open to the options, so feel free to explain. Although if it looks like that picture you posted does it really make the phone look like a cheap chinese knock off?

Strange, I cleared my cookies and cache, then tried jailbreakme.modmyi.com, which redirected to jailbreakme.com.

Now I don't get the "host not found" error anymore, it just finishes downloading instantly and I get a "Oops, file received was invalid."

So what's your rationale for not pirating?

I just don't want to. I grew out of it, I can afford whatever I want. If it's some expensive software, like CS5, then I also need support and the cost is tax-deductable. Otherwise, I either demo and purchase if I like it or I don't buy.

In terms of music, I have a very good HiFi setup and with certain albums, I enjoy the maximum quality that the CD format allows me to have. I even have some vinyls that I listen to from time to time (Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, some operas). Otherwise it's Spotify for me during the day.

With DVDs, I enjoy the extras and subtitles to improve my foreign language skills. With Blu Ray, there is no point in piracy - you want the maximum picture resolution with high definition sound [5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 (I can't get this yet)], then piracy is no solution. Also, Blu Ray is a very cheap form of data storage and is very convenient.

The only reason, why I'd be happy to take part in intellectual property theft is to make my point about record labels bullying ISPs and litigating the hell out of people, who would obviously never spend their money to buy the tracks that they download. I think that in terms of penalising piracy, the current situation is a disgrace.

still getting the same error message and i have tried everything people have said to do here to no avail.

I can confirm this works haha. Running 4.01 on 3GS :)

Maybe its our phones im running the same verison 4.0.1 and i'm getting the same error. does anybody know if this deffo works on the iphone 4 running 4.0.1? please help

I just have to say that this is insanely great! Software as a service is looking pretty good after all.

u might wanna reset your network setting to the factory setting.. and download it over ATT server..

Fully agreed; at least I am glad these people represent less than 1% of Apple consumers, otherwise our favorite company wouldn't even be here nowadays.

Funny thing is: these JB-lovers will be the first ones to complain that Apple is not providing warranty for jailbroken devices when a BIG problem occurs.

And don't even get me started with Linux: what a horrible trainwreck in terms of UI, troubleshooting and overall software fragmentation.

The existence of people with the ability, inclination, and means to tinker like this was absolutely paramount to the foundation of Apple Computers Inc in the first place, so in my opinion, there's probably a middle ground where it's a good thing for some proportion of the population (albeit probably small) to be inclined to "hack" without malevolent intent, or else innovation would be stifled.

Anyway, this is a very dangerous vector for delivery of such modifications to the iOS, because it could easily be duplicated by people with less honourable intentions than the Dev Team.

Malicious hackers could start publishing other web sites which hack iOS devices without the owner's knowledge or consent (unlike the Dev Team's implementation), and install applications that compromise the owner's privacy and online identity. Apple would be doing every ordinary user a favour if it closed the hole which allowed for this method of jailbreaking, as quickly as possible.

It's fine by me, if the jailbreaking method requires the would-be hacker to take some explicit action which makes it clear that they positively want to assume the risks associated with modifying their iOS software. It's something else entirely, if the potential exists to cause such modifications to occur without the user's understanding, knowledge, or consent.

Finally got it by turning my phone off and back on. I don't know if it was a coincidence, but it worked the first time (after many failed attempts).

Well, I managed to break my iPhone... off to the Apple Store (with a great story) and several hopes to have it fixed.

PS: Keeps rebooting after I tried to restore it after I JB'ed it

I don't think AT&T is stealing from us.

You sign a contract, they give what they've agreed to give.
You don't like the terms, cancel or don't sign up in the first place.

Those rules are in place for a reason.
The 3G "pipe" is only so big. You want more bandwidth, you're gonna have to pay for it. This is why they cut off the $30/mo-unlimited plan: there just isn't enough room for "unlimited" usage, and the million new iPad 3G users were soaking up a lot more of that than they realized would. If they allowed tethering, 3G would choke out in minutes and then you'd be whining that they can't support what they promised.

So long as people are willing to pay for the service they get, they're not "overcharging". Supply and demand. Vote with your wallet. It's a paid service, not a human right.

Somehow I think you don't understand what "stealing" is. Go look it up. AT&T is not taking money from you at gunpoint; you're free to get network service from a dozen providers ... or none at all.

I'm not a lawyer, and I don't play one on TV, but here's my take on bandwidth. AT&T quotes me a price and gives me a quota. In this case, let's say it's 2GB per month. To me, this means I can use 2GB per month without incurring additional fees. I should be able to use all 2GB in a single day if I want, just as long as I haven't gone over the 2GB limit at the end of the month. I should be able to create my own little 3G based network, share my connection with every device I own. Once I exceed 2GB, AT&T gets to charge me more. Fair enough. That's what I agreed to.

If AT&T doesn't like it and is concerned about capacity, perhaps they should alter it to have a 'daily' cap per account. I don't think too many people would stand for it, but it would be the better solution if capacity is your concern.

Huzza!:D

You're holding it wrong (low signal) =p

Pls keep it on thread about JB and not piracy. Its dull. Its bad. Pls dont do it for sake of all the hardworking developers on here.

point taken.

if you read my post a bit closer though, you'd realize it had nothing to do with stealing business away from any developers on here or pirating apps.. my post was based 100% on the music industry.

off topic i agree. but nothing harmful towards anyone here..

and sorry again for the OT

But you're not paying for more bandwidth when you tether. You're paying to access the exact same amount of bandwidth you've already paid for, but from a secondary device.

You don't think that's stealing?

I'm with you here. If AT&T was offering up an extra 2 GB or so for the $20 tethering fee, no one would blink an eye. But to charge $20 for accessing the data you've already paid for in a different manner is absolutely ridiculous. If Time Warner Cable told me that I'd have to pay an extra fee to use WiFi at home instead of Ethernet, I'd tell them to go screw themselves. The arguments about laptops or iPad consuming more data falls flat when you consider that AT&T is already going to charge you for going over whatever data limit is on your plan. If you're willing to pay the fees for going over that limit, why should AT&T care how you reach that point?
