Well I did it, but now I'm trying to download some apps from them and their site is so damned flooded that I can't :(

Oh well, maybe tomorrow.

after numerous tries I finally got it to jailbreak;) Has anyone else experienced issues updating Cydia?

I am new to the Jailbreak world so I have "zero" Experience with any of this!

Any comments, pointers suggestions are and will be much appreciated.

Thank you gentlemen.

yes the upfront cost for a phone looks like a lot but you will save money in the long run. how?

lets take a $100 phone. that's the full price. you buy it, and then sign up for service and if its a gsm phone , you can sign up for a "contract free" service.

but lets say you get that phone from a carrier for "free", then:
- you are tied to a contract (2 years), cheapest voice plan, w/out tax: 40 * 24 = $ 960
- if its a smart phone, then mandatory data plan (extra $30/month) = $ 720
- termination fee , around $200
------------------
total : smartphone $1680 in 2 years, non smart phone $ 960

so, would you rather pay $100 for the phone and have the freedom to switch carriers, cancel at anytime or prefer to be tied on a contract just because you are getting the $100 phone for "free"?

No, you actually aren't saving money here, unless you have no service at all. Whether or not I'm under contract, I'm still going to be paying $X/month for a voice plan and $X/month for a data plan. The ability to "cancel anytime" is hardly worth the $500 to me as I'd just have to switch to another carrier and pay comparable rates anyway. And voice + data are pretty much "must pay" expenses if you have a smartphone. Otherwise, what's the point?

Your extra $500 may give you a perception of freedom, but it's not really saving you any money. And in reality I have almost the same amount of freedom as you. If I want to break my contract, I pay my ETF and sell the phone (which in turn pays for the ETF). Then I jump to another carrier and buy another subsidized handset.

So if we both stay with the same carrier for 2 years, I come out ahead. If we don't both stay with the same carrier for 2 years, you don't end up any better off than me.

Also I have been wanting to Jailbreak since getting my phone almost a year ago, if anything just for the fact that I think Freedom of Choice & Individual Freedom should NOT be Dictated by our Government, Apple or anyone else for that matter!

You actually got past the Oops message recently?

is that, when the phone is "branded" your carrier knows exactly what phone you have. that's why they can make data plans compulsory if you have a branded smart phone.

on the other hand, if you have an unbranded smartphone, the carrier does NOT know which phone you are using. so if you like, you can sign up for the cheapest data plan using a regular phone, and swap the sim cards. OR you don't have to sign for any data plan at all with unbranded smarthphone.

however if you will be using data anyway, then its your choice.

Issue with email after JB

Every time I open "email", it closes right after opening.

Anyone else having the issue and found a fix?

Thank you all!

Figured it out. Tlert was causing it. I didn't read that I had to go elsewhere for the BETA for iOS4.

i'm not advocating piracy at all. i just think users should be able to install programs at will. after all the device, the hardware is theirs. why should the service provider or manufacturer dictate what you can and can't do on your own device? that's one major reason i stay away from subsidized phone but more importantly the cost. please see below:

to each his own.

I don't get this. Yes, playing 600 dollars for an iphone is good if you don't want to be tied down. But you aren't saving money. If you know that you will be with att for another 2 years and you feel comfortable with that then signing a contract IS SAVING MONEY. but if you don't like being tied down...yes, spend the 600 dollars. But you still have to be pay your monthly bill. It's just now you have the freedom to move to other carriers if your phone has the proper band..but then again you will have to spend money per month. So then you have to do the math....

to each to his own. I wouldn't get into the iphone game to save or not save money. It's like people driving 10 miles to save 10 cents on their gas per gallon.

Worked great with no issues, looks like Cydia is slammed though, but I got the only app I jailbreak for installed, MyWi, works like a charm!

If AT&T gave a price for all-you-can-eat wireless data that you could use via your smartphone on any device, I can guarantee you it would NOT cost $30/mo (or even the monthly rates of the current tiered structure).
Perhaps you didn't hear the news that AT&T is no longer selling unlimited data plans for the iPhone? So your data usage is now metered. You're paying for X amount of data. You should get to use that finite amount of data on as many devices as you'd like.

Wow...you managed to miss the part where I said "or even the monthly rates of the current tiered structure".

Oh, wait, that was part of my quoted reply you responded to. You may have missed it, since it was obscured by parentheses.

You're missing the point here: this isn't about "paying for X amount of data". Even the "unlimited" plan had a soft cap of 5GB/month, at which point AT&T would start bugging -- and even disabling -- customers who abused it.

The current data rates are based on a presumption of usage amounts on particular types of devices. They would cost more if tethering/hotspot usage was included, because they KNOW that most customers simply do not use certain amounts of data on these types of devices.

If you bring tethering/hotspot functionality into the mix, this pricing model would change. Whether you like it or not, this is completely different from the home broadband pricing model.

Of course, it is web based so those scam sites offering to jailbreak your phone cannot just rebrand the software and send it to you, pretending it's theirs. I hope they put a banner on the site that says "IF YOU HAVE PAID TO BE SENT HERE DEMAND A REFUND - JAILBREAKME IS FREE SOFTWARE".

And with any luck most of the jailbreak scam sites would just go down the gurgler.

Jailbreak worked fine. However, installing the "Facebook Cydget" lost my cell provider, leaving me with no cell service. Restoring now!

Anyone having any luck using DTunes? Mine exits when I try and start a torrent, and terminal immediately shuts down as soon as I open it. Also - Whats the widget app called that makes your home screen similar to android?

Anyway to tether yet for FREE?

I don't need the Wifi ability, I just want to be able to tether is SOME way with JB 4. Trial version of MiWi then uninstall? Would like to enable the "regular" tethering feature without losing Unlimited Data...

Thanks...

Has MY3G and MIWI been updated for 4.0?

Will I need the backgrounder app on cydia?

I haven't downloaded the jailbreak yet. I'm just sitting here at work. Ah gad`~~~!!!!

Well keep searching then bro, free trial route doesnt work. You can try other repos with questionable stuff, but we can't discuss that here. Really though, can't cough up the 19.99? I mean, its a one time fee for a lifetime of free tethering, dont be so darn cheap man, its saving you hundreds of dollars alone mywi!!!
