What's your Mac Mini doing with all those Mac Pros? Wait, what are you doing with all those Mac Pros? :p

That's truly impressive! I'd buy a Mac Pro, but I can't justify the cost of getting one... yet.

CPU Temps are now idleing at 26c. Thats almost freakin room temperature.
My iBook idles at around 45c! Then again, the iBook seems to mainly rely on passive cooling. It only turns on the fan when it reaches 65c.

As soon as I catch wind of a new mac pro coming out I sell my current one on ebay. I ALWAYS get exactly what I paid for it.

I assumed so. :) It's great that you're getting back what you paid for it.

and this iBook needs to be replaced.

Congrats MacEnforcer! More Reports Please.

Oh and another thing. The whole time it was encoding the fans never increased in speed. It is really remarkable.
Congrats MacEnforcer. I'm having to wait about two more weeks for my 3.2GHz octo to arrive. Looks like that EyetV export is going to be a wonderful time killer @ 3.2GHz. Was that iPod compatible 2 pass H.264 640x360 from HD originals or what? Have you given Handbrake 0.9.1 a shot yet? Any Toast tests yet? ElGato claims Toast 8 will use all 8 cores.

So I run a simple benchmark on every mac I get. I record a show with EyeTV. I record 1:01hr and then encode it to ipod at the highest settings. Here are the results for my mac pros.

- 4 core 2.66ghz old mac prow/6gb ram: 1:07:37 hrs
- 8 core 3ghz old mac pro w/9gb ram: 0:46:52 hrs
- 8 core 2.8ghz New mac pro w/2gb ram: 0:27:15 hrs

That is freakin umbelievable. I can't wait to test it when my other 8gb of ram gets here. I think its safe to say that the new 3ghz octo is twice as fast at the last version. WOW!

Oh, and just in case you are curious. My mac mini with the elgato Turbo .264 got 1:20:17 hrs.

The one conclusion I can draw from your post: Yay mac mini!!!

Still blows my mind. The best part about it is, it's only got 2GB RAM.

darthraige, I took the advice you provided me a couple weeks ago on the speed of this beast and stuck with the 2.8, rather than doing the 3.2 upgrade I was considering. This thread confirms your wisdom. Thanks, Bud. I put the money saved into a 30 inch ACD, and extra RAM. Feelin good. :)

Well I for one would like to thank you for these posts. I purchased the 3.2 with 8800GT, Raid Card, 4 1-TB drives and 16 GB of RAM from OWC. For kicks I bought the EyeTV Hybrid Stick with QAM. Already have Toast 8 and use it to pull anything I record from my TIVO. Man, this is going to be fun....

Problem is, I've waited so long to purchase this computer I'm numb.

I wish I had your kind of money to spend on toys.

Well for one, its not a toy for me. Its my business. And two, I've saved and saved and worked a very long time for this computer. I was ready to buy in September but waited knowing all well that Apple would release the new big bad boy sooner than later. Glad I did now. And three, TAX WRITEOFF.

And that my friends is my State of the Union! ;)

Wow. The numbers are brilliant, but not only that, the temperatures are just amazing. I've got the 2,8 quad, and it always amazes me to check istat and see the cpu temp. I'll be encoding a video and editing a photo and it'll barely hit 105F. It's unreal.

I'll Have Both The 3.2GHz And The Raid Card + 32GB RAM + Four 1TB HDs, 3 In Raid 5

- 8 core 2.8ghz New mac pro w/2gb ram: 0:27:15 hrs

And how much faster will this be with a Mac Pro HW RAID card?
Perhaps faster than a 3.2ghz machine.
End the I/O bottleneck....
10-15 days 'til I get my 3.2GHz with the RAID card + 32GB of RAM + four 1TB drives. Will Raid 5 the three beyond the #1 boot drive. Then I'll let you know how fast the ultimate configuration is. :D

Awesome thread! I'm psyched and now want EyeTV! I better wait until the new mac pro actually gets here though. lol. Feb 13 and counting...

Boy I can't wait for my Early 2K8 to arrive!

Right now (on my iMac G5) I'm getting over 10 hours ripping and encoding 1 DVD using Handbreak and around 3 hours converting a 700MB divx to MP4 using VisualHub for my AppleTV at the highest settings.

I've stopped doing it since last Sep thinking I was going to get a MP then. Thank goodness I waited.

This is not a RAM intensive process so I think 2Gb was not used but great processor benchmark!

Hmm, I think the RAM does have something to do with it. My Macbook seems slower with 4GB, and lots of people have said they feel a slow down after adding RAM.

I'm guessing if you add extra RAM that's not needed, it'll slow down the system.

- like me, I usually only use about 2GB RAM out of my 4GB
