Loaded Quad MP $ = Base Octo MP $ Right Now Probably

I'm tempted to get one of these in place of my 2.66 quad. I bet my wife wouldn't even notice if I swapped them in the middle of the night :D
First I have to line up a buyer for my old machine who will be willing to come to my house between 2 and 4 am. Mac Pros are just too damn big to hide around the house for long ;)
My hunch is you can probably still sell a loaded Quad 2.66 for not much less than the cost of a base 2.8 Octo. Surely your wife won't object to that will she? :)

These performance details are still unknown to most of the general public.

Handbrake numbers

Just to let some people know, I've got the 8 core - 2.8 mac pro (stock configuration) and its averaging about 110 fps on the ipod high-rez settings (H.264) coming from a dvd movie. Thats while I'm browsing the internet. Its using around 600% of the processor. Its simply amazing!

Sorry for being slightly off topic, but when someone says x.x GHz octo Mac Pro, what does "octo" mean?

- 4 core 2.66ghz old mac prow/6gb ram: 1:07:37 hrs
- 8 core 3ghz old mac pro w/9gb ram: 0:46:52 hrs
- 8 core 2.8ghz New mac pro w/2gb ram: 0:27:15 hrs

That is freakin umbelievable. I can't wait to test it when my other 8gb of ram gets here. I think its safe to say that the new 3ghz octo is twice as fast at the last version. WOW!

Oh, and just in case you are curious. My mac mini with the elgato Turbo .264 got 1:20:17 hrs.[/QUOTE]

I hate you...:D not really, but darn these are hot! I makes me even greener in the face to have bought the 2.66 in December :(....

BTW, what is your GPU in the 2.66 old system?

I got my new 8-core 2.8GHz this weekend. I added an additional 2GB of RAM (eek - bought it from Apple, so I paid a premium) but other than that, it is the base model. I ran XBench on it and the stock hard drive and thought I'd share my results. I absolutely LOVE this machine!!!!! It converts a 2 hour divx movie to Apple TV with VisualHub in 12 minutes!!!!

Here are the XBench results:

Nice. very nice.

I just can't wait to come back here in 10 years and laugh at how long it took to encode movies.

Or marvel at the fact that at one time, the studios even allowed us to "own" one.

Good point, especially if you have an older 8 core Mac Pro. Many buyers wouldn't know about the difference between an 07 Octo and an 08 Octo. The fact the case is the same helps this.

So I got my ram today. Now have 10gb in the mac pro. It is definitely feeling faster. Surfing the web is without a doubt snappier BUT I ran the same encoding test with the new ram and guess what. SAME exact time. Interesting. I guess its not a ram intensive process to encode video. I would not have thought so.
