Really not trying to be an ass here dude, but you've got a lot of negative energy going on here. Not healthy.

This prox issue is so random (unlike the antenna issue, I can't find anyone who has it here at the office out of a good sized group of IP4s), why not keep trying replacement phones until you get one that works for you?
Because the problem happens with all phones, depending on your method of usage. They changed their policy and aren't replacing phones for the proximity sensor issue anymore. They are telling customers to wait, it will be fixed with a software update.

So we all wait. This is something we shouldn't have to worry about. It should be a high priority for Apple NOW.

i called apple just to establish a case #, etc. she (apple rep) said i could mail it in for repair, or set up an appt with an apple store. but at this point, my case # is good for 30 days so i will wait. one of the first questions she asked me was whether or not i use a case or a screen protector (which shouldn't even be important anyways). I should be able to use a case, etc. But whatever... she said they are "investigating" the issue (after talking with two supervisors to figure out how to handle the call - she didn't seem like she has really heard of the issue, but she also seemed fairly new). She also said that it can't be an issue with all of the phones or their call system would be jammed. But my guess it happens to everyone to some extent, whether they notice it or not, is another story. Some people use headsets, some use the speaker a lot, some have huge heads, or small faces, etc. Maybe it only happens if you hold the phone with your right hand (bad joke!).

Mine does it with or without the case/shield. I had the first one replaced for the SIM issue. I like the device, but this proximity sensor issue is making it difficult to deal with. I either mute the call or play a tune on the keypad. I don't know to either wait for the update or head back to the Genius Bar.

I've got two IP4s here and 6 more at work that don't have the prox issue no matter how you hold 'em.

Had a fun time with the "genius" today. They all said that they know of the issue but it's software related and that all of their iPhones are fine so they don't think there is a problem. Just that was their answer. Since his phone didn't have a problem then might didn't either. No idea on an update though. Anyone think calling apple directly will have a better result?

I've had the proximity sensor since launch day. Now on my second phone and waiting for the update. I've owned every generation of iPhone and am still scratching my head at how a key feature of the device, mastered from day one, can have been so badly screwed up in 4. Started having to use speaker phone or even sometimes holding slightly away from my head so that I don't touch the screen.

I'm really surprised this annoying fault hasn't had the same press as reception issue. I do think it is software-related though as my second phone was ok for a few days but then the music started again... if it isn't, then it's back to see the geniuses.

Apple - get this mess sorted already! btw, liked the trackpad software update (inertia just adds something) for my 2009 macbook pro.

Thanks for handling this for me dmorris01

bmwhd I think really has no clue what he is talking about and I hate people that chime in to threads like this to state certain comments like that.

Once again I see that 4.1 beta2 was released today and most are saying that it still doesnt fix the sensor! I guess we need to wait and pray that the final will have it you know what together and get this fixed for all of us.

If 4.1 releases and the sensor is not fixed this phone is officially GONE!

Hopefully Windows Phone 7 is cool and I can finally get away from this iPhone once and for all.

I've noticed the issue with the proximity sensor but my simple fix is not to crush my iPhone 4 with my Cheek first.
The sensor is placed higher up if I am correct, place your cheek first and the sensor won't activate right away for the same reason you can use your finger. When on the phone the sensor is on your ear so when picking up the phone place your ear first?

When I go in cheek first I do happen to press the buttons.. but it's not a big deal to me I because I've always done the ear thing ever since my 2G

but I do want a fix for this since my mom keeps pressing things with her face

I have NO idea what this was all about

Basically when you pick up the phone stick the top of it to your ear first then bring down the rest of the phone. Try it and see if you press any buttons

That's not acceptable. It needs to work like the 3GS does and it needs to be fixed.

Not sure why you think I have no clue. I've been an every day user of all 4 gens of iPhones, I'm a paid developer working on apps, have participated in 3 different iOS beta programs as a contributor to the development team starting with the Exchange stuff in 3.0 and I support our corporate iPhone program. I stand by what I said - there are numerous IP4s including mine that do not have the prox sensor issue. Your's does apparently and I never disputed that. I do dispute that all IP4s do.

Yeah this issue is reeallly starting to get to me, me and my bestfriend talk all the time for about 4 hours at a time and every night I either mute on her, dial numbers, call someone else which puts her on hold and etc. Shes so used to me putting her on mute now that she knows right when it happens, "I'm on mute Amanda." I get that about 3-4 times on every call. Ugh, lame.

The proximity issue is fixed in iOS 4.1!!! i am a developer and i have been using it for a few weeks now with no issues!!!

And if you want it bad enough check out this site!!

How to get iOS 4.1

I need more than this... There alot of people in another thread about 4.1 beta2 that say the newly released beta 2 from today still doesn't fix there issue!

Hahahaha this is so crazy. First, I cant hold a certain part of the phone, then i have to have it touching my face (or ear) in a particular way. I just dont even know what to do know. I actually miss my 3G now. I can hold any way that I want and guess what, it worked!

I'm admittedly confused. If the proximity sensor issue is a software issue and all iP4s have the same software, shouldn't all iP4s have the problem? Otherwise, it would seem to be a hardware problem.

I'm currently on my third iP4 (original replaced twice) and all three have been plagued with the proximity sensor problems, big time.

I've also been having the proximity sensor issue since launch day and it has been driving me crazy. I have been launching the Notes app during every call so at least my face is just typing random numbers rather than hanging up on people or dialing others. Still sucks, but at least it's slightly easier to deal with until Apple fixes it.

Have you called Apple to get a trouble ticket/case number started? It is the only way to make sure this problem gets fixed for all of us. It takes just a couple of minutes. See my signature below.

I have been having major problems with my proximity sensor on my IP4. Opened a ticket with Apple, they said they would replace the phone. I went to the Apple store this past weekend to get a replacement instead of sending it in. Just my luck the replacement phone didn't have a working speaker, it made no sound at all. It would only vibrate not ring etc. Went back to the Apple store to get a replacement for my replacement.

And of course the replacement to the replacement is giving me problems with the proximity sensor. When I'm on a call it goes to Facetime, Mute, scrolls through my contact list, calls people. So frustrating.

I'm a little surprised they still have reps replacing phones for this issue. Another week and I start getting grouchy.

Ya me too.... its all nice and dandy to know that this will be hopefully fixed in the next update, but its a HUGE issue and for them to just drag there feet for weeks when its so wide spread of an issue is retarded!

I've got AT BEST 2 weeks left in me till this piece of crap is heading back to apple.
