I had enough. Returned my iPhone 4 today.
Used it for about 6 phone calls... Hung up on 4 of them, and activated Facetime on 2 of them.
Week 30 in Canada.

I will be ordering another one when the software fix is out, but for now I will keep my BlackBerry.

Loved the iPhone 4, but this was too much. Sad to see such flaws in a great device.

My proximity sensor 'fix'

I am also hanging up on people and invoking facetime do to the proximity sensor, however i have found if i simply click the home button and exit out of the main call interface, the call stays active and I do not have the same proximity sensor issues, not a real fix, but it beats hanging up on people!

I tried that too for awhile but kept hitting the green bar at the top sending it back to the phone screen. I've went back to keeping it on the phone screen and holding the phone against my ear but away from my face... VERY annoying.

Today, I've sent my phone back, mainly because I ended up dropping every call I ever made, due to proximity sensor issue. They're replacing it. I'm not expecting the new phone to be different. I guess I will use the headphones a lot more, if the new phone has the same issue.

Between the death grip ("don't hold it that way") and the proximity sensor (perhaps the shape of my head isn't approved by Apple), the phone is not very good at making calls.

I am on my second phone as of today. Alas, problem.... STILL THERE!!!

+2 for this comment

Wish I was alone with this issue but I'm glad I'm not! :p

I sure hope this 4.1 when it officially gets releases fixes this issue, if not my money is back in my pocket and after 3 years of the iPhone I will no longer ever go back!

I some how randomly dial people. Not even the last person I dialed. Just random!

Cant tell you how many times someone has said that I called them and they could hear me talking to someone, usually someone in the room i'm in.

Nothing like having someone listen in on your personal conversations.

Basically when you pick up the phone stick the top of it to your ear first then bring down the rest of the phone. Try it and see if you press any buttons

Wow,this seems to work really well,no more problems w/ 'ear first' method..

Lolwut?

I've been locking my screen with the sleep switch since I've had my iPhone 3G.

If you've had you're headphones in or possibly bluetooth - Yes. If you've been using without then - No. Sleep button at the top of the phone ends a call.

Good for you Bro!!!

Thanks for helping out this thread SOOOO Much with that reply.

Consider it ammo you can use with Apple support. "Please explain why you won't replace this handset when there are clearly a great many people with phones that do not have this defect."

This is true.... cause if they dont have proximity sensor fix in the next week or so when 4.1 releases I will have them replace my phone every damn day till one works right!

Its gonna suck having to get a new phone every day but one of them will be like all these other miraculous phones out there that "seem to not" have the issue.

I'd do that because working prox sensors are not that rare around here. In fact, I've found one IP4 here at the office that has the problem, dozens that don't.

I use my phone for a lot of business calls so this was awesome. Today's calls run down on iPhone 4 #2:

1. 7 calls that were muted for no apparent reason
2. 4 calls that were hung up by me while I was speaking.
3. 3 calls that went to speaker phone while caller was talking
4. 1 facetime attempt, even though I didn't and never have
5. 2 calls put on hold

Yep, this thing is working like a champion.

PS. For those that dont have this problem I am envious, stop posting you are not wanted in this thread (joking but only kind of, since misery loves company and all...) For the rest of us, THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I forgot to add, since so many don't have this issue, should this be a hardware problem and not software?

Thats about my daily log as well.... I use for work as well (they pay half my bill) and let me telly ou what if you are using a phone for business "DO NOT" buy this piece of crap!!!

Hey guys,

Clearly this is a MAJOR issue, mine is actually fine, It operates the same as my 3g as soon as it's near my face it turns the screen off, I don't know why so many units are effectd and some not?

How do I find the week build of mine?

Is it possible it was a bad batch of prox sensors?

I realize the ear first method works, but sometimes I multi-task and then the phone moves a little and then gets lightly against my ear, etc. and then the proximity sensor messes up and I hang up on people.
I never had this problem with my 3G.

The problem is, I don't want to have to pay extra attention on the way I am holding the phone (antenna) and then also at my ear (proximity sensor).

I had the phone for 2 days and used it on speaker and left the phone on my desk to avoid hanging up on people. It just didn't work for me, I like to be comfortable and not think twice when I go to answer the phone.

Major frustration here, too. My cheek just hung up on a callback from my doctor.

So, I called Apple to vent. Tech Support has been told to tell us that the fix will be the end of the month. I'm going back to the Apple Store to exchange it again, hoping for one that works.

I asked if the Beta had the fix and he said that all it had was software for developers and no proximity sensor fix was included in their version. He said that the proximity sensor fix was being tested and they were working around the clock. I volunteered to test their fix and was refused. ;)

No flaming, please, I don't make the news, I just report it.
