One week left for me before I have to turn it in. I'd love ti keep it but it's just not usable as a phone in it's current state. The apple rep on the phone made an appt for me tomorrow at the store to replace the phone. If no luck it's going back. Sad, it's a beautiful phone that just was released too quick. I think steve Jobs ultrasecrity has really harmed the development of the phone....

Y me too.... its all nice and dandy to know that this will be hopefully fixed in the next update, but its a HUGE issue and for them to just drag there feet for weeks when its so wide spread of an issue is retarded!

I've got AT BEST 2 weeks left in me till this piece of crap is heading back to apple.

I have no proximity sensor issues at all. I wonder if FoxConn is using various vendors for the sensors and calibration needs to be adjusted differently for each vendor.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I didn't really notice the proximity sensor issue until I got a MicroCell & started using my phone for calls more often. It reaches ridiculous when I get interrupted two or three times during an hour long conversation because I try to FaceTime, dial another person, or just cut them off all together. Hope this will be fixed soon.

The proximity sensor was perhaps the most annoying issue. Sure, I had the "push to drop" issue too, but I knew where "not" to "hold" and adapted - it was the prox sensor thing that finally got me to return it.

Tried really, really hard to like the 4. It's beautiful, snappy, nice camera, etc. But, yeah - I need it as a phone. Since I still like Apple products, and I had "upgraded" from a 3G, it's about worn out so I'm waiting on my 8gb :)eek:) 3GS. Yes, I hafta sign a new contract - and yes, only 8gb - but it's stable. I'll just have to manage my apps and data. Likely, when the new model comes out I'll be able to upgrade since ....what is it...."I spend more than $88. no...$99.... no...$54.33".:apple:

Mine's not that bad but I did accidentally mute a call last night. Is it more sensitive to light now? I put my hand over it and the screen locks like before. I haven't noticed any hesitation to the screen locking.

I think its just all in how we use our phones whether it happens or not, I have ALOT of people say they had no issues for a few weeks but all the sudden had some hung up calls and a few calls on hold issues all the sudden. I think most all have it but just haven't noticed it yet probably.

I've had nothing but proximity issues, I can live with a case on the phone, but the prox sensor is killing me. I cant make a phone call without it putting someone on hold, dialing a random number for a three way call, muting the person or flat out ending the call...experienced on all firmwares (4.0, 4.01, 4.1B1, 4.1B2)

I think I'm gonna try out 4.1 and see if it fixes the issue. I backed up my SHSH for later jailbreaks. I can't take this anymore as it has become embarrassing for me to use it and have to tell everyone "OH IT'S MY NEW IPHONE DOING THAT". I had planned to take it back, but refused to pay the restock fee for it (ATT) so now I'm stuck with this joke. :(

I just wished apple would start being more proactive in helping customers instead of trying to convince us were crazy. After this fiasco, this may be my last iphone and has definitely pushed me away from ever buying any other type of apple product.

There is no issue, well not on mine which was just released in Australia - screen cuts out exactly when required, no issues at all. Sometimes it pays not be the first in the world to try a new phone.

Well pin a rose on your friggin stupid nose! Dont come into a thread that's 15 pages long of people with this issue and say "There is no issue" !!!

There is an issue and I hope you dont have to experience it but for those of us waiting for Retard Jobs to pull his head out of his back end and fix our phones it really sucks!

But thanks for your input that helps nobody in this thread.

Unnecessary. You weren't forced into this situation. I assume from your signature that you sold your old iPhone before you knew what you were getting into with this new phone. That's your own fault for needing (like the rest of us geeks) to have the very latest gear: you could have returned the 4 and got a Droid (or whatever) or even a 3GS. Spewing at someone you don't know because they have the audacity to share their lack of a problem (which is useful information) is uncool.

This thread has been mostly peaceful up till now. Let's keep it that way.

sorry I didn't know we had the peaceful police on scene!

I don't like people that come into a thread and say "THERE IS NO PROBLEM" .... its a HUGE problem for me and obviously thousands of others.... it only takes one stupid comment about this issue and it pisses me off.

If you don't have the issue... GREAT.... don't come on an tell us that there is no issue just cause your 1 out of 3 million doesn't have it.

I will continue to keep it peaceful as long as people are mindful of the issues others are going though.

In the past week, I've:
1) started dialing another number
2) started facetime
3) put call on mute

I really hope they fix this soon!

What's baffling to me is that there are so many people saying they're not having issues at this stage. Given that one is more likely to post to a forum like this if one is unhappy as opposed to happy, that suggests to me that there are more people without the issue than with, though such a claim would be hard to prove.

And if that is the case I'm tempted to start harassing Apple for a daily handset swap until I finally get a good one.

Which I will start doing on, Idunno, August 16 if we don't have a software fix by then.

My first phone had it bad. Second only exhibited it a couple of times in 10days. (Both phones week 27.) I had dinner last night with a very high powered cmpt. engineer (not a phone guy), I asked him if he thought it could be fixed with a software fix. "No" was his answer.

For those who think there is no issue with the proximity sensor, just check the apple discussion site. There are two seperate threads; one with 95+ pages and the other with 61+ pages of users having the issue.

When apple designed the front facing camera, they changed the layout and functionality of the prox. sensor. So now it requires a specific placement near the ear canal for proper operation. The sensor is designed to output a signal to the software when it detects reduced/no ambient light (ear or finger covering the sensor). This operation is hardware-dependent and can't be changed by a software fix. However software can changed how it interupts the signal to 1) delay the screen from coming back on, 2) disable the call screen functions.

I returned my 2 IP4s because I cannot foresee a software fix completely rectifying this issue for all users. If I was designing a fix, I would have the call screen completly shut off and use the mute button to enable it manually when in a call.

Surly they could have just migrated the proximity sensor from the 3GS as that one wasn't too bad! I don't remember ever having as many problems as this

I am in ur same situation (3G->iP4) and I considered switching down to a 3GS due to proximity sensors (I just can't go back to the slowness of the 3G AND no multitasking for a whole year) but I'll just wait for the software fix that is coming. The fact that a solution will be here "soon" gives me hope. If apple can't fix it then they will have a publicity nightmare on their hands!

Skype App Curiosity

I have had HORRIBLE problems with the proximity sensor from day 1. It makes the phone almost unusable. However, I noticed last night, when making calls via the Skype App, the proximity sensor works perfectly... no problems whatsoever. Does the Skype App have its own software for the proximity sensor? I can't think of any other explanation.

No problems here. The proximity sensors must be produced by multiple vendors... some better than others.

Now that iPhone 4 is out in multiple countries, can we see if the proximity sensor issue is being reported by anyone outside the US?

Is there anyone receiving the latest production iPhone 4's outside the US who ARE having a proximity sensor problem?

I have got a week 30 phone from the UK. Nearly every call I have activated face time or cut off the caller etc so I can confirm it isn't just US or early phones !
