Apple support forums reveal that exchanged phones are doing the same thing.

well isn't that just freaking wonderful  my replacement phone is coming today (the one that they told me yesterday wouldn't even ship until the 23rd.... and the one day no one will be at my office to sign for it... )

"funny" thing is... the senior advisor tried to claim he hadn't heard of my issue with the proximity sensor... ya... right....

youre holding it on your face wrong!

oh... YA.... the initial person i spoke to tried to pull that crap on me  i told him in no certain terms that i don't hold the phone ANY DIFFERENTLY than i held my 3GS for the last year....

No issue here either :D In fact the only time i ever had this issue with an iPhone was when i had a case on my 3GS which covered the prox sensor but i threw it away and it worked again.

iPhone 4 IMO the best keeps getting better :D :apple:

mine seems to be really finicky too...i had a lot of problems with it the first night i got the phone....had the speaker phone button hit by my check and its really annoying...and then later today i was on the phone twice and it doesn't look like its as shaky..but i am "staying tuned"

I agree. I'm fine with the reception/bar issue, I haven't dropped a call yet, but I live in fear of hanging up on someone with my cheek as I see my screen go on and off out of the corner of my eye.

I don't suppose any of you guys have screen protectors on your iPhones do you? I was having this exact same problem, I removed my screen protector and haven't had this problem since, I've made dozens of calls and the screen turns off just like it should, when it should.

I wonder if those who are having the problem restored from a back up from a 3G or 3GS? Both my wife and I did and we had bad proximity issues. I got mine swapped out for Bluetooth issues and it hasn't had any issues since starting off as a new phone. Worth a try...

Was told the same thing by Apple support. Mine's been doing this since day one (launch day), along with repeatable signal degradation to the point where the call goes dead, when held in my left hand. The latter despite being in a bumper (also from day one) and not in any sort of death grip or other attempt to bring the problem on. I have to use my left hand and my left ear, as my right ear is hearing impaired, so I'm going back to my trusty 3GS and this shiny new 4 is going back to Apple.

I'm really bummed as it's leaps better at everything over my 3GS ... except at being a phone.

Edit: No screensaver on my phone.
Edit: Yes, of course I've reported all of this to Apple. Both via feedback page and over the phone.

I'm puzzled by this supposed proximity sensor issue. Been using my phone constantly and I've not accidentally hit any keys with my face while on a call.

Longer calls

I'm puzzled by this supposed proximity sensor issue. Been using my phone constantly and I've not accidentally hit any keys with my face while on a call.

Seems to happen on longer calls.

I have had it happen a lot on business calls very frustrating.

Ok so as I said I was able to fix this problem with my phone by removing the screen protector, I made a whole bunch of small calls to Vodafones service desk thing (It's just a robot that tells you to press a number blah blah blah) anyway I read that someone said it happens on longer calls quite a lot so I thought I'd try to ring Vodafones service desk thing again, put the phone to my ear and just listen to the robot repeat itself for 10 minutes, anyway after 5 minutes the robot woman got annoyed with me and said "Please hold and I'll put you through to an assistant" I was like...Oooookkkkk, that's random because it's 4 in the morning, surely there will be no one there, to my surprise a woman actually answered and asked for my name, I paniced and hung the phone up lol...what the hell was someone doing at the call center at this time, it even says on Vodafones webiste that it's only open 9am-8pm or something...Just thought I'd share that little story with y'all :D

Another frustrated user here! The new proximity sensor or software is not working properly. It worked great on my 3G and 3GS!

Does anyone know if the hardware or location of the sensor is different from 3G/3GS?

People with the proximity sensor issue, are you using a screen protector?

Maybe this is interfering with the sensors function.

I posted this on the first page of this thread and told people to remove them, I was using a screen protector and was having the proximity sensor issue, I removed it and the issue is now resolved

I don't hold the phone against my face so this isn't an issue for me. I also try to use the headphones as much as possible. I could see how this could be a bother for some of you though.
