I agree.

This is an issue that concerns me (a lot more than the reception thing in fact).

The reception thing can be remedied with a case.

Likewise, the iPhone should absolutely be in a case anyways, it's glass is too fragile not to be cased up.

However, the proximity sensor issue is one that no case is going to fix. It's disappointing how little coverage it's getting in the press when it's imo more significant.

THIS PROBLEM IS DRIVING ME ABSOLUTELY INSANE !!!:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Please apple let us know this is something you are working on so I feel like the 4.0.1 will maybe fix this issue and that its not a proximity sensor hardware issue!

I've now got a bumper and fine with the signal issue but this is really the main issue as the OP stated and gave data to back it up!

QUESTION: We have 30 days from the 23rd when we received the phone for exchange correct? Not 30 days from the 15th when it was pre-ordered right?

This is happening to me too. Very annoying. I'm having to use my Bluetooth headset or in-ear headphones more than I usually would, just so I don't push buttons inadvertently.

I'm going to wait for the software update, and if it doesn't fix this, I'm exchanging it.

Last night I put someone inadvertently on hold because of this. I now hold the phone a little bit off my face if I don't have my earpiece in (always felt holding the iphone itself was awkward, in any version).

PS. Just figured out that it might be PS issue that's caused my recent spate of dropped calls. I must be hitting the "END" button with my face. I haven't had any dropped calls since I started holding the phone a little bit away from face.

This is actually reassuring. I thought it was the heat buildup that was ending my calls. Not that I have any real idea...

Does anyone else not have proximity sensor issues? I hold it up to my face and the screen turns off, pull it away and it turns on.

Mines been exactly the same as my 3GS. In fact as an example, I dont actually touch the glass of the phone against my face at all and at the corner of my eye I can see that the screen is not lit so its safe to say that they arent all super sensitive.

Deff something that could be corrected via a software update for those with the problem though.

It may seem like a lot of people are suffering with one problem or another but the reality of it is that they have shipped nearly 2 million phones so sometimes a problem will seem amplified.

It's funny how those who don't have this annoying issue dismiss our concerns. Many of us with this issue have owned iPhones since 07 and know how to use the phone. I'm tired of this ridiculous issue, as of now, apples only solution to us is, restore the phone. Furthermore, Steve Jobs apparently was quoted saying about iPhone issues, "relax, it's just a phone."

really? at 199.99 and up plus sky rocket data plan options, text messaging plans and the two year contract which commits $1,000+ a year, essentially per individual is equally real.... just?? For all the money we pay, whether to apple or AT&T, we deserve a phone that actually works well as a phone...........hmmmm who ever thought that would be important for the i "phone" 4 ????

I witnessed my proximity sensor misbehaving yesterday. I always hold the phone slightly away from my face so only my ear touches it. I could just barely see the screen flashing on and off a few times. Since I don't touch it with my cheek the way I hold it, I didn't activate any buttons.

Seriously, if this is a problem for you, just hold the phone so it doesn't touch your cheek until Apple gets the fix out. That at least avoids the problem. (Yeah, I know it sounds a lot like "You're holding it wrong" still. :D).

I posted this on the first page of this thread and told people to remove them, I was using a screen protector and was having the proximity sensor issue, I removed it and the issue is now resolved

So, by your logic in order to fix the antennae problem we have to put something ON the phone and to fix the proximity sensor problem we have to take something off?

Fix the damn phone. Period.

If these issues were missing features we thought should be there I would agree that some of this is whining but these are missing features, they are basic functions of a PHONE.

Ok so as I said I was able to fix this problem with my phone by removing the screen protector, I made a whole bunch of small calls to Vodafones service desk thing (It's just a robot that tells you to press a number blah blah blah) anyway I read that someone said it happens on longer calls quite a lot so I thought I'd try to ring Vodafones service desk thing again, put the phone to my ear and just listen to the robot repeat itself for 10 minutes, anyway after 5 minutes the robot woman got annoyed with me and said "Please hold and I'll put you through to an assistant" I was like...Oooookkkkk, that's random because it's 4 in the morning, surely there will be no one there, to my surprise a woman actually answered and asked for my name, I paniced and hung the phone up lol...what the hell was someone doing at the call center at this time, it even says on Vodafones webiste that it's only open 9am-8pm or something...Just thought I'd share that little story with y'all :D
They probably outsourced the Customer Service dept to India or something. Stuff like cheaper labor and the hours work better to cover the night-time callers (think it's the afternoon in India when it's night-time here). Don't quote me on that though, I'm just guessing.

And i guess Apple should've tested the "phone" portion of their product more. Kinda glad I was with the "waiting for a white iPhone" crowd or I'd be screwed out of a phone that can make phone calls without trouble.

This has been happening to me on my 3G since I updated the software to iOS4 - must be a software issue therefore as it didn't happen before.

Gives you all hope with your iPhone 4's

My theory is that the proximity sensor's different location on the 4 may have something to do with it. Perhaps a software update can provide better calibration for it.

I attempted to reset all settings as suggested in this thread by someone. I can say that I've attempted to replicate the issue and so far I haven't been able. I don't want to jump the gun on this one and say it's fully fixed just yet, but so far so good for me. I'll post an update in case it happens again. But so far resetting all settings has worked for me.

My phone doesn't do it. But my boyfriend's does. He's had to resort to just putting me on speaker when he's at home. Otherwise we can't carry on a conversation. Though he said it doesn't bother him too much. I'm the only person he usually has a phone call with that's over 5 minutes. But I guess I'm going to have to steal his phone to get it replaced. It doesn't frustrate him, but it frustrates me. I hate being on speaker.

"funny" thing is... the senior advisor tried to claim he hadn't heard of my issue with the proximity sensor... ya... right....

well next time they say something stupid like that, say... "well there's a first time for everything, and i'm the first one reporting the problem. just because you haven't heard of it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist"

This happens to me whenever I try to let go of the phone and reposition myself, like if I put it between my shoulder and my cheek for a second. I can't see this as an actual hardware problem, but more of a sensitivity problem which I'm sure can be adjusted with software. When I use the phone normally I don't have the issue. I tried it in a mirror, and I noticed that when the screen lights up, the sensor IS actually away from my face very briefly. But still, I might try the reset all settings in a moment. I'll try a restore later just to test.

EDIT: Resetting settings worked for me. When the screen came on on, it was definitely away from my face. I could trigger the screen coming on holding on to it by cheek and shoulder because of the phone's new shape, but when my cheek came close enough to hit the mute button the screen went off.

I think issue may be hardware related because if it was software then all iPhones would be affected. My iPhone yesterday got wet and the two water damage sensors have a red speck, not the entire sensor is red but I feel apple will reject an exchange.

Is there any video of this issue? I've tried to replicate but can't unless I completely pull the phone away from my ear.

I'm just telling people what it took to fix my proximity sensor issues, while I agree that Apple should fix the signal issues it's hardly their fault that screen protectors mess with the proximity sensor, that's probably why they don't sell them in their stores

I don't suppose any of you guys have screen protectors on your iPhones do you? I was having this exact same problem, I removed my screen protector and haven't had this problem since, I've made dozens of calls and the screen turns off just like it should, when it should.

I can confirm that this worked for me. The first thing I did when I bought my iPhone 4 I put an IS on the screen. Based on your recommendation I removed my IS and now it works.
