So, by your logic in order to fix the antennae problem we have to put something ON the phone and to fix the proximity sensor problem we have to take something off?

Fix the damn phone. Period.

If these issues were missing features we thought should be there I would agree that some of this is whining but these are missing features, they are basic functions of a PHONE.

There's nothing wrong with the phone, I reset all settings and it was immediately fixed. And it's been a known issue for screen protectors to sometimes interfere with proximity sensors since the original iPhone. This shouldn't come as a surprise.

Respectfully, there may be nothing wrong with YOUR phone but there is plenty wrong with MANY phones in regard to the proximity sensor.

I have no screen protector.
I have tried resetting all settings. No good.
I have tried restoring as a new phone. No good....even BEFORE I load any programs or data.

It DOES come as a surprise that I have a phone than does not reliably work without hanging up, conferencing in a third party, going to speakerphone, etc.

I am glad that resetting worked for you. It did not work for many of the rest of us.

Wouldn't it be nice on here if just because someone was able to fix THEIR problem, they were a little more understanding with those of us who STILL HAVE a problem.

I have an appointment with the Genius Bar this afternoon. Will report results.

So what's the big deal?

My current iP4 has no problems. The one I have now is my second. I noted a problem with the screen on the first one (not the yellow mark issue), called Apple and the next day I had a new phone without any issues.

I see the point in chiming in here so others can see if there is a small quantity with a sensor issue or a more widespread software problem. The problem here is -some- folks are going on and on in ranting fashion. Many of them don't mention even talking to Apple.

Jeez it's just a phone :)

Adding to the chorus of proximity sensor complaints

My proximity sensor problem doesn't make random phone calls but it does frequently cause the mute function to be activated -- particularly annoying because (unlike dialing a number or activating speakerphone) you won't realize you are on mute for a while. I am also experiencing inadvertent speaker phone activation less frequently.

For the record, no screen cover, problem occurs whether talking on left or right side of face, and I tried resetting and restoring the phone. Never encountered this problem on 1st gen, 3G or 3GS models I owned.

Just adding my voice to this thread so hopefully this issue gets on Apple's radar screen.

Have you contacted Apple or made an appointment at an Apple Store for the issue? Seems to me that would be more likely to make it appear on Apples radar then posting here.

To be honest, I've never dropped a call on iP4 because of reception problems. It's only ever been proximity sensor issues.

I agree. I'm about to call Apple support again. (I'm not confident the "Geniuses" at the Apple store have the means to relay the message to Apple in a timely fashion.)

Jeez it's just a phone :)

It's annoying for people to say this to me when I'm having problems.

Imagine you just bought a double-double and fries from In-n-Out, and it's the most delicious looking burger you've ever seen. The buns are toasted golden, the meat is juicy and plump, and the tomatoes look as if they were picked only minutes ago. Imagine, then, that you drop your burger on the floor. Splat!—no more burger. You're sad. Now your delicious burger is gone. What if I said to you, "Jeez. It's just a burger."

Wouldn't that annoy you?

—don't even answer that. It doesn't matter if it annoys you. Most of us would feel lame in that situation: I really wanted that burger, and now it's gone.

In the situation we're in now, we've spend hundreds of dollars on a better, more reliable phone. Instead, we're dropping more calls than we ever did on a Motorolla Startac because of this issue. It sucks. Can't you empathize? :/

The point in saying 'its just a phone' was that so many act as if its the end of the world because they dropped a call, had a spot on the screen or cheek dialed the operator. God forbid something genuinely bad happened in their life.

Big deal, take it back for exchange or buy somebody else's phone.

I agree if the plan is to make noise in Apple corporate, then a case number is a good start as opposed to just calling an Apple store for a Genius appointment. If you do not get satisfaction and have a legit issue, an email to Steve Jobs with the case number describing the issue has gotten results in the past.

In my case, I got a case number and they made an appointment with a Genius for me. All done and new phone in a day.

Maybe I should have clarified. There's nothing wrong with the phone as a whole. In other words, not ALL phones are doing this. I thought that was understood, I apologize.

Same Issues

I'm having the proximity sensor issues but only noticeable with longer calls. Also if I put the phone on my shoulder it will face-dial and hangup.

Ironically I was JUST on the phone with Apple and while the girl was helping me out the phone ended call with her. I was so furious but good thing she called me back.

Im about to resync my phone to find out if that works. If not, hello EVO 4G.

I just noticed this issue on my phone. Sigh :(

The screen would turn on and off frequently as I have it up near my face (without moving the phone away from my face).

Resetting all settings has worked for many of us here; give that a shot. I don't know if you meant resyncing or restoring your phone, but resyncing alone isn't going to fix the issue. Try resetting all settings and hopefully that'll do the trick.

Well, I just got back from the Genius Bar. The Genius said that this was the third phone with the proximity problem that he's seen. He initiated a call on my phone and then fooled around with seeing when the sensor kicked in, and came to the conclusion that there WAS a problem.

He replaced the phone, and I am now loading all my stuff onto it. In the brief bit I used it before syncing, it seemed to be better. Keeping my fingers crossed. Maybe it was just a bad batch.

I was hesitant to trade my phone in because I was afraid I'd get worse than I was giving (ie, yellow screen, green blobs, etc...none of which were on my original phone). However, so far this phone seems fine.

The key to the proximity sensor problem is seeing what happens when you aren't thinking about it! If you think about it constantly you can control it. It's when you're paying attention to your phone call, not your phone, that it rears up to bite. So we'll see over the next day or so whether replacing the phone has done any good.

ALSO FYI: He did use his computer to fill out a detailed report as to why he was exchanging my phone. I noticed that he input "proximity sensor issue" without explaining any further which leads me to believe that Apple is aware of the issue, and that it doesn't have to be re-described with each occurrence. Hope that's just not optimism on my part!

i think i may be having a problem with my sensor too but i'm not really sure lol

are most people having the problem just holding the phone up to their ear? or is it mostly when you try to hold it between your shoulder and ear?

mine seems fine when i hold the phone in my hand up to my ear, but sometimes when i put the phone between my ear and shoulder (hands free) it will end the call or mute or dial someone else or speaker phone

like if if i am on a call and lay the phone down the sensor works fine when i put my hand over it

32Gig I4 and am having the proximity and dropped call issues. Of the approx. 7 calls I made today, 4 went through okay, one dropped, one got muted and one went to speakerphone, all without me doing anything to purposely cause the unwanted actions.
Also, I find the I4 to be uncomfortable to hold without a skin and nobody has any in this area (all sold out). Otterbox wont be available for 2 more months. Lastly, insurance for this phone seems to be hard to get at a reasonable cost. I guess I just have a litany of issues and am going to return it for a bold 9700. This is my 4th try at trying to love the iPhone and it just isn't going to happen, ( I have tried the original, 3g, 3GS and now the 4) Since I am still within my 30 day return period, it shouldn't be a problem. To all of you that love the phone, you should, it's is a magnificent piece of engineering, it just isn't for me.
Good luck to all of you.

Do you guys hold the phone flat against your face? I hold mine against the top part of my ear, away from my face? So no problems with the sensor. Reception problems? Of course! Proximity ones? I gotta agree with Steve.

I hold the phone flat against my ear (your face cant hear :p) but I leave the center part of the speaker dead center even with the center of my ear which where the Proximity Sensor is located is literally in my ear and Fully covered and every few seconds out of the corner of my eye I can see it come on and off on and off.... IT DRIVES ME :mad::mad::mad::mad:

I agree on this point, even though it's a bit insensitive (for lack of a better term) to cast the argument in these terms.

We need people to keep their cool, for sure. I'm trying as hard as I can, but you're right—a lot of people do act as if it's the end of the world. Even if it were the end of the world, this wouldn't be appropriate to act frantically. If a meteor were predicted to hit the Earth tomorrow, I would probably spend my last days productively and joyously.

With these problems, I'm just trying to diagnose problems and communicate them to Apple. When I call Support, I try to give them detailed ways of reproducing the problems, so they can fix the goddamn phone. I also know that Apple, in time, usually fixes every fatal problem I've had; so I know it's not productive to construct conspiracy theories or be fatalistic.

I'm sick and tired of the "I don't have this issue people".....all the f'in phones have the issue, you just haven't experienced yet.....

meaning....

you haven't held the phone in a way that causes the issue to occur. the end.

I don't think thats going to do the trick for you! Unfortunately....

When I was on the phone talking to an apple expert I experienced the issue and my cheek terminated the call twice....it was f'in funny...

lol. C'mon—if I have to hold the phone away from my face, it defeats the damn purpose of the proximity sensor in the first place. Why is it so wrong for people to want their phone to work correctly, especially when the iP4's predecessors have functioned fairly well in these regards?
