Im curious about this too, cancelling and getting out of the contract after the 30 day period. I have been patiently waiting for a fix, and there seems to be no time line or expected date, yet I am hanging up on people constantly or putting the phone on mute/speaker phone.

Its starting to really get to me.

I have been through the process, and I will tell you they won't CARE if you are past the 30 days, in fact, you need to "INITIATE" the return the day before the 30th day of the contract. They will then e-mail you a return slip (if you bought it through Apple). Even if you go try to return it to a physical store, they will send u back home and tell you to mail it back via FEDEX.

For those who have made exchanges with service phones: KEEP TRACK OF YOUR NEW SERIAL NUMBER. Can't stress this enough, the Genius that "helped" me used the excuse of having different serial numbers as being "confusing" later on in the process. Well, he wasn't kidding. I had a 3 way call with a very helpful Apple rep and we called AT&T (whom turned out to be the incompetent ones), and had to argue with 2 different managers. In order for AT&T to reverse my contract, they kept saying they needed proof. Well, we had proof, the Apple rep was telling the AT&T manager that the returns department had signed for my package according to FEDEX tracking. They still wouldn't listen. Finally, she called one last time and an AT&T rep reversed my contract.

Apple received my phone on the 23rd of July according to FEDEX. I logged in 2 days ago, and I still hadn't received my refund. I called Apple and the rep said they still hadn't received the phone. I told her to look at her notes, and she had to end up getting the manager. She came back and said, you will be contacted within 48 hours. I still have yet to hear from them.

Very frustrating process, heard 5 different things from Apple & AT&T, very inconsistent. I would like to stress how important it is to be persistent with the process.

I'm in the uk to not sure how it would work. When I bought the phone from the apple store they had access to the o2 systems. I never went near an o2 shop for it buy my contracts with o2. The way I see it if I get a replacement which is the same they ate selling the phone when it's not fit for purpose(is that the right line?)
So you should be able to get a refund and have your contract cancelled. I'll update tomorrow after I've been to the apple store. !!!

Possibly the only way out would be for o2 in my case to say give the phone back to apple and get another phone from us but keep the contract !!!!!
Which I might go for. I have an iPad now so a new phone might be something I'd be interested in.

Well I got a replacement. Have made 2 calls on it and it seems ok. See what happens now. Genius said he'd heard of this a few times:rolleyes:

Hmmm, i'm getting an ip4 today. My dads doesn't have these problems, it was a day 1 iPhone 4. I am wondering, is it a problem with the newer ones, or a widespread issue?

I have three friends who are running the latest beta of IOS and they all confirm that Proximity Sensor issue has been fixed.

It is the design of the phone. It is the design of the phone. It is the design...

I have a day 1 iPhone 4 purchased from the louvre store in Paris. Haven't had any proximity sensor issues. I am not saying there is none in case of you guys, Apple even acknowledged the problem. Just for anyone reading these forums, there are many people out there not experiencing these problems.

I don't understand though, how could it be a software problem if only some phones suffer from it?

Got my new phone yesterday , today the sensor issue has started already. What a joke !!!!
These phones are terrible.

Just off the phone with o2. They said I can cancel my contract or they will give me another non iPhone. !!
What to do?????

I've had 3 different iPhone 4's and all were replaced because of the proximity sensor problem. The one I have now has the problem also and I cannot stand it much longer. I hang up on my wife EVERY SINGLE CALL unless I put her on speaker phone.

I am beginning to wonder if they can fix this with a software update and I'm thinking of getting rid of the phone. I cannot make many calls without dialing someone else, hanging up on them, or putting them on mute/hold.

I also have other problems where I make phone calls and it will just say it's calling the person and it never actually connects however the END button its completely gone and you can't END the phone call, its like its transparent.

UUUUUGGGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!

can anyone else confirm. I have had 2 iphone 4s. Had the first one swapped cos of the proximity issue. Still got it with this one. Original was a week 23 the 2nd one i have is a week 26. 2 of my friends have a week 27 and they dont have the issue.

No its not. No its not. No its not.

I have a 32G and it is fine. No proximity issues at all. My friend however bought one (he got his here in FL and mine came from CO) and he is having the proximity sensor issues. Its a hardware issue; not design. If it was the design then ALL the phones would be bugged.

What should I do?

I have a 32GB week 32 iPhone 4 and I am having proximity sensor issues and it's driving me nuts. I have a genius bar appointment later today, will they replace the phone or am I just wasting my time?

And if they replace it what are the chances I won't have the issue again? Can anyone who got a replacement or something please chime in.
