MiniLED at iPad sizes didn’t exist either until apple worked with its suppliers and invested a lot of money to get there. It was a lot more work than the oled ramp-up.

I agree, plus OLED panels for 13" and 15.6" laptops were already widespread before the release of the MiniLED iPad Pro, and not that more expensive, for instance, the 15.6" HP Spectre with OLED panel is just $50 more than the LCD one.

Edit: Just checked the Hp Store, the LCD option is not even available anymore, all the panels are OLED now and included in the same price.

You are correct, Apple basically confirmed that devices are planned/locked-in 2-3 years ahead of release.

However, when it comes to iPad Apple has shown little consistency.

Examples:
  • The release of iPad 4 just a couple of months after the release of iPad 3.
  • The released of iPad Pro 9.5" that was superior in many ways tech-wise to the recently released and more expensive 12.9" Pro (WTH...). [This was my first iPad, by the way].
  • The "update" of iPad Mini just to include TouchID ($100 extra) with literally the same old chip and display, just to abandon TouchID technology soon after.
  • The release of iPads with two different styluses at the same cycle.
  • The release of iPads with different connectivity/charging ports at the same cycle.
So I would not be surprised for them to be adopting OLED and then half-way through the cycle switching to MicroLED in one or two devices... just because...
Typo... 10.5 Pro, not 9.5"..... well could also mean 9.7" Pro, pick one ;)

iPad-sized OLED panels don't exist at scale today. Take a look at OLED monitor prices. MicroLED remains years behind OLED in R&D.

iPad mini uses LCD, not OLED.
Why are you looking at monitors?

Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, and even Gigabyte have 13” and 14” notebooks with OLED. They aren’t unicorns either. You can buy them today, some for under $1,000. Samsung also just announced mass production of 14” OLED panels with 90Hz.

I meant the 9.5" (or was it 9.7"?), that was the one anyway, not the 10.5". Thanks!

That iPad still survives and works flawlessly, it was inherited by my non-techy sister, I just replaced the battery and that was it.

Samsung makes every one of those panels, all at 4K res. Cutting a panel to spec for the iPad apparently costs too much now for Apple to accept, not unlike the niche market for OLED monitors.

9.7" Pro ... I had that, and afterwards the 10.5". The 10.5" has been in use from launch until may this year when I took delivery of my 12.9 Pro 2021. My son is getting it, glad it's staying in the family, was my favourite ipad.

Nothing against iPads.... they are freaking amazing and if you use one for productive purposes or content viewing, good on you.

As for me, they just don't light my fire. I have the base iPad and I occasionally use it but I'll aways be a Mac guy. (IE old). 🤓
You need to buy the correct generation iPad if you want it to light your fire :p

Very unbelievable rumour.

You should have tried instead:

“Apple plans to replace LCD screens with lower cost LCD screens with more obvious jelly scrolling but higher profit margins”

Apple doesn’t do “better” any more. They just do “worse than before but smaller bezels and higher price”

Still makes no sense to me. If Apple thinks OLED is the better display, it could have switched to OLED this year instead of miniLED, which was a huge investment for them.
The report suggests it is a 2024 product. It is 2021.

Apple spent 5 years developing mini LED and it turned out meh. They're going recoup that loss for a few years until they can get an OLED panel they're satisfied with.

I assume OLED is being selected for devices that prioritize battery life, which makes the most sense in devices that have smaller batteries. These rumors are so far out in advance it makes me think they are just hedging their bets in case microLED is unable to be mass-produced in the next few years. For iPad and MacBook size devices a microLED panel would likely perform far better than OLED.

Why do people whine about OLED brightness? my OLED iPhone is plenty bright as is my OLED tv. I wouldn't want them any brighter. all about the blacks being blacker. the bunt in on an iPad with static elements on screen for a long time might worry me though but my LGCX TV doesn't burn in from games so I assume new LG displays have solved this

LOL Whats wrong with the watch?

Been an iPad fan forever, was an early adopter back when everyone thought they were silly. I've never looked at them as a productivity device, for me they're all about media consumption/interaction. That said, my biggest wish-list is a slightly larger (media) iPad that's not trying to replace a mac. I'd love to feel like I'm holding a seamless piece of glass with no bezels - which always seems to confuse folks but you simply incorporate dead pixels around the edges so there are no false positive touches, but you've still maximized your screen real estate. Then go thinner and lighter and voilà, you've got a whole other market device for folks like me who - when I'm doing more heavy lifting work - I still need more robust hardware, which most certainly is not an iPad.

It is in The Elec's interest to push this narrative as they are Korean Publisher. Same goes to Digitimes for Taiwan.

And Nikkei has zero reputation on anything supply chain, even the Japanese ones.

MacUnsubstantiatedRumors click-bait strikes again! This time they post an unsubstantiated rumor that even Siri, as stupid as she is, could have guessed. And of course the fan club buys into it as though it was a fact. Even Forrest Gump knew that stupid is as stupid does...

What? Nikkei publishes fewer specific predictions but remains well sourced.

A double stacked OLED can solve most of the problem and so far, mini LED isn't near OLED unless they make micro LED to replace OLED.
