Absolutely no improvements apart from slightly smaller bezels

That’s all the richest company in history could achieve in 12 months, under Tim Cook’s “leadership”
Exactly. Only smaller bezels. Oh, and a brighter display. And it’s more durable. It’s also more resistant to environmental exposure. Basically everything associated with the screen was significantly improved.

Nothing else.

And Apple manufactures the screens?

Oh, no. It just buys them. So all screen improvements were actually delivered by the external supplier.

I hope Apple doesn’t use the same OLED as iPad mini. Take your time Apple. Don’t rush it.

Unfortunately, none of the iPads use OLED as yet. If iPad mini had it, it would be awesome. Instead it’s an old LCD panel and not the best of the kind. 🤔

As Apple has historically been both slow to adapt new display technologies and then doesn't move on from them very quickly when they do, I understand that this seems odd. But I think what it comes down to is keeping ProMotion going in the Pro lineup. Similar to how they waited to adopt adaptive refresh on the iPhone until they could source enough of the LTPO OLED displays for their need. Since the iPad Pros have had ProMotion (using LED backlighting) going back to 2017, they don't want to go backwards and throw in an OLED display just because it's OLED if they can't source enough of them to be adaptive. This sounds like they are aiming to be able to do so in 2 or 3 years. In the meantime, I think they implemented mini-LED as a step up to improve brightness and dynamic range while retaining ProMotion until they can produce OLED displays of this size with the adaptive ability.

My gut feeling at least.
I would add to that that micro LED doesn't seem to be developing at the rate previously predicted. Apple may still be hoping for microLED displays but those may be 2026+ at this point. Look how far ahead they are on small-scale miniLED displays, microLED is a whole difference scale.

Also the newer OLED screens are starting to rival microLED in efficiency and life span, which makes sense, the real difference between microLED and white OLED displays is the "organic" nature of OLED. Find a way to make the organic LED last as long as an inorganic LED and the differences start to become immaterial.

Tim Cook is recycling rejected panels from 2008.

That’s supposed to be a joke but it wouldn’t actually surprise me if Apple was using the mini 6 to claim environmental tax credits. Its absolutely abysmal quality makes no sense unless Apple is making serious coin from it one way or another.

Why? What’s wrong with miniLED. This sounds like a step backwards unless these are pretty amazing OLED displays.

Exactly. OLED is known for burn-in, and the brighter they are used, the shorter life they should have. The article only leaves questions.

The elac posting something untrue. Why would iPads be pled when apple wants them to go macro LED

They have wrong about everything TSMC and Tech. I dont see how they are well sourced in anything.
Nikkei definitely has legitimate supply chain sources. They may not draw the right conclusions, but the reporting on TSMC 2nm remains well-corroborated, for example.

I honestly, don't understand why Apple doesn't update their entire iPad lineup at once... it is a mess.
iPad Air with A14, iPad mini with A15, iPad with A13 and iPad Pro with M1

They should have the Pros with the M1 chip, but the other ones have the same processor, at least the iPad Air and Mini.

Funny enough, one of the main reasons for me to not get one, is this mess. When the iPad mini is here, I prefer the form factor of the Air, but it doesn't have the latest processor; then I consider the Pro, but a new one is coming; and it's a never ending cycle, haha!

Good. LCD tech is basically the equivalent of VHS in 2021. Outdated, fugly and garbage. Even Samsung TVs are switching to OLED next year.

Another piss yellow, red tint oled screen coming to the iPads. 🤦‍♂️ STOP using oled displays apple, they're crap.

iPhones would like a word...
I have no other options. Everyone is using flickering oled now. I just have to take it. But i do feel more uncomfortable when using my iPhone 11 Pro, 12 Pro, 13 Pro compared to iPad Pro. So now I tried to put most of my browsing on my iPad.

the simple answer is that people who prefer OLED clearly have the larger voice, no matter the actual outcome.

The miniLED, save for some caveats, is incredible. I obviously own the 12.9 inch myself.

The OLED on iphone is great as expected, but the flickering is just. No way i would want that for a 12.9 inch ipad.

no way, unless they seriously know how to bring in magical-grade OLED panels.

So yea. Im hoping for microLED here

Well - What about proper external monitor support i.e. "extended display" for the "old" M1-ones ?

I’m so looking forward to an 11” OLED iPad, be it an Air or Pro, I’m ready to upgrade when they come out. Especially the brighter, longer lasting LG panels they are working on.

I love my 11 inch with the M1, but I really thought they would open thr iOS up more and have it be a more capable device. I can’t see myself going for the pro model again.

This is fake news. I highly doubt that Apple will put OLED into anything high-end. They only get 20-30% as bright as needed for a good HDR experience. OLED is inferior to mini-LED tech. It's too dim so the "HDR" is terrible and the burn-in is bad.

If anything it would only be considered in the smaller iPad Pro for battery reasons (the same reason it's in the iPhone) but even then it's still out of place on a high-end device.

I think for the majority of iPad users, the device is a companion, not a replacement, for their Mac.
Yet Apple insists on marketing the iPad as a “computer replacement”

when the iPad Pro line gets serious with full blown MacOS instead of being hobbled with iPhone OS than it can be considered a possible computer replacement, other wise each iteration is just one big expensive iPhone minus the native calls.

by them I expect Windows 11 , Samsung foldable + Dex 2 and even Linux Tablets all with far better software to clearly have surpassed iPad Pros.

iPads just like iPhones are pretty much getting boring.
