I’m still wondering why Apple didn’t use a higher resolution OLED display at 120Hz in the FIRST iPhone. I mean, I’m able to read about that tech now, it’s certainly been available for, what, hundreds of years?

This is fake news. I highly doubt that Apple will put OLED into anything high-end. They only get 20-30% as bright as needed for a good HDR experience. OLED is inferior to mini-LED tech. It's too dim so the "HDR" is terrible and the burn-in is bad.

If anything it would only be considered in the smaller iPad Pro for battery reasons (the same reason it's in the iPhone) but even then it's still out of place on a high-end device.

Technology DOES continue to march forward. There was a time when blue on OLED had an abysmal life, now there are phones that will be traded in well before the original user even notices OR sold on eBay once or twice without any of the users experiencing an issue.

As was mentioned on a story a little while ago, Apple considers what will go into a new product years in advance, not, say, three weeks before it’s released. :) They saw miniLED as what to improve/perfect for release in 2021 and the fact that they’re focusing on a new technology three years out shouldn’t really be surprising. Right now, with the tech available OLED can’t cut it. BUT, these are problems they’re likely to overcome from their research and development effort. And, if not, they can make the decision next year to continue to go with miniLED 3 years out as they work to perfect the tech.

I think for the majority of iPad users, the device is a companion, not a replacement, for their Mac.
Over half? I think I’d say “For the iPad users with Macs, the iPad is potentially a companion”. BUT, there are more iPads sold every year than Macs by a fairly significant margin. Over half of all those folks are not using iPads as a companion to a Mac that they don’t have.

wym too dim, take the iphone 13 pro ,it can go up to 1200 nits in hdr ,while mini led can do 1600.

however being controled on a pixel level, the contrast is actually much better + the dark parts and shadows are much more visible

besides i just noticed that the s21 ultra as well as the note 20 ultra can get up to ...1500 nits, woah! so close to miniled's 1600nits isnt it

Longevity is important. Hopefully there won’t be a burn in issue with OLED iPads. Hoping both 11” and 12.9 Pro iPads get the same screen and not just the bigger one.

Guess I’ll have to change current usage habit (max brightness, screen on all the time). It’ll be sick if Apple introduces Always On Display. The iPhone also is long overdue for AOD.
