A better OS would be highest on my list…. Higher than a better screen if im honest
Ideally yes, a much improved OS is needed. I don’t necessarily mean macOS but something better than what’s available today to take advantage of the M chip.
I’m sure sales of the iPad are not increasing as much as expected so they have to compensate by changing the inners of the tablet (chip, RAM, storage), the exterior (bezels, camera placement, screen), and make new exclusive accessories (M3 Apple Pencil and magic keyboards) to help keep the price per unit sold higher than prior models.
In my mind, the long term play here is to have everything Apple sells you subscription based. That includes hardware, software, and OS’. Selling you a product is a one time profit gain for them. Making you subscribe brings in money monthly.

Indeed… subscription services can be a huge cash cow.

But if they forced it…. id probably end up buying less from them… and would more likely just be a shareholder… and use another companies tech.

They're already expensive enough. The only time they sell as it is is during Christmas when Best Buy, Amazon, etc., puts them on sale.

Samsung sells tablets with OLED displays for like $500. Why can't Apple?
Because they dont need to… they move AVP starting at 3499 and it flies….

Apple are a business, their priority is making money. They don't do this as a kind gesture.

Apple's price increases for its upcoming iPad Pro models with OLED displays could be up to $160, which is substantially lower than early reports have predicted, claims DigiTimes.

iPad-Pro-OLED-Feature-2.jpg

Apple's current 11-inch iPad Pro starts at $799, while the 12.9-inch model with a mini-LED display starts at $1,099. Previous reports have claimed that the pricing for the next-generation 11-inch ‌OLED ‌iPad‌ Pro‌ could start at $1,500, while the 13-inch model might start at $1,800.

One report even quoted up to $2,000 for the larger model, although this could be referring to a higher storage tier available for the 13-inch.

DigiTimes does not cite a source for the $160 price increase figure, but if it is accurate or even approximately correct, that could see the starting price of Apple's 11-inch OLED iPad Pro remain under $1,000, with the 13-inch variant starting at around $1,200 to $1,300.

The increase in cost is attributed to the OLED panels, which Apple has not used in iPads before. OLED panels are more expensive to source than LCD panels, and Apple's specific requirements for the screens, such as a very thin design using a tandem-stack design, contribute to the higher cost of these OLED panels compared to others on the market.

On the plus side, OLED technology not only improves display longevity and efficiency but also allows for higher brightness levels. Apple is sourcing these OLED panels from Samsung and LG Display, who are rumored to be developing these special two-stack tandem OLED panels specifically for Apple.

The new iPad Pro models are expected to be powered by Apple's latest M3 chips. MagSafe charging is a possibility for the upcoming devices, and they are also likely to be accompanied by a refreshed version of the Magic Keyboard that includes a larger trackpad to make the ‌iPad Pro‌ look more like a laptop than the current models.

New ‌iPad Air‌ and ‌‌iPad Pro‌‌ models and accompanying accessories are expected to launch around the end of March, which is also when Apple plans to release iOS 17.4 and iPadOS 17.4. For everything else we know about the forthcoming ‌iPad Pro‌ models, be sure to check out our dedicated roundup.

Digitimes? Nothing to see here. Move along people, the price won't change.

I'd be willing to put money on the fact that the actual price increase will be 0$. OLED is not some magical or expensive technology. At the volume Tim Apple buys his screens the negotiating position is strong enough to be cost neutral. As a matter of fact, increasing OLED volume over what they already use for iPhone could even lower cost.

If your assumption is true I'm definitely going for the 13" Pro lol
At least it makes economic sense, but being  we are dealing with I won't believe it until I see it

“On the plus side, OLED technology not only improves display longevity”

What? Ever heard of burn in? OLED is still a flawed technology. I’m excited for the cheaper 12.9” Air though

So what? It is about how much the customer base is will pay for the “latest fancy new wiz-bang” technology. The actual BOM costs are secondary.

I would love an iPad with OLED simply for the eye candy, but my M1 pro is still blasting through everything in its path several years later. I think the newer processors are enabling larger times between upgrades, hence we’re seeing leas frequent product updates on iPad and Mac.

My hope is Apple will consider a 16:10 ipad pro for the larger sizes. As video all tends to be edited in this format it would mean i could use ipad to show clients rough cuts and not cart my 16” pro mac everywhere.

Well duh. Like anyone realistically expected a $500 or more price increase for the same configuration.

MagSafe + USB-C would be great, so I do hope that they are able to add it (and one assumes given EU+ regulations they'll keep USB-C).

I've used my iPad for Music and in a pinch even dj-ing. But the lack of ability provide power through the USB while also using the usb to power an external audio device makes it of limited use for this. It's not great if the battery drains halfway through! The iPad is frustratingly close to an actual productivity device, but falls just short.

It's kind of a chicken and the egg situation**, what good is even a copy of MacOS if it doesn't run Mac apps to take advantage of the OS.

** The egg actually came first.

With Vision Pro, I'm done with big iPads. Basically the only model I'd be interested in is the Mini + apple pencil, if they ever update it without the jelly effect screen (I owned a current gen iPad Mini for a year and sold it to go back to a Pro because of the screen.) iPad Mini Pro for $999 with OLED/120hz/M3 - I'd be in.

Back when I was DJing with my Lighting-port iPad I used a splitter for audio out and power.
