I was just dumbfounded why someone would defend the current sorry state (including pricing) of the iPad lineup...
To be honest I think the iPad Pros are kind of overpriced for what you get, just like how I think the iPhone Pros are kind of overpriced for what you get. However, I think the entry level 9th gen iPads are appropriately priced. As mentioned, the cheap Android tablets all suck.

The other thing is in the US at least, the 9th gen iPads commonly go on sale. They were US$299 a couple of months ago.

The main things kids do with iPads are play incredibly basic games, watch YouTube, video call friends and post messages on social media. You can now do that on £30 garbage from China. That's part of why an antiquated iPad like the iPad 9 feels like bad value.

I beg to differ. I had a ZTE Grand X View 4. It goes for US$70. It is absolute junk, almost unusable. I’d rather use a 10 year old iPad Air 2. That’s saying a lot, because I really dislike using the iPad Air 2 in 2024.

This product is already absurdly overpriced. Let’s not look at the cost of a component but what the product offers versus costs. The iPad Pro is just a very bad proposition.

Instead, the cheapest iPads (set aside being scammed with storage and Apple forcing you to play the upgrade ladder game), are clearly positioned as not competing with a laptop but instead as light computing devices.

I think 64 GB is fine for entry level. However, I also think 128 GB should be an upgrade option, at a lower cost than the upgrade to 256 GB of course.

To my surprise at the time, they actually did this with the iPhone XR, offering a reasonably priced upgrade to 128 GB from the 64 GB base model, but they refuse to do this with the entry level iPad.

Maybe that's a particularly bad one? The £30 one I got as an odd gift from the Chinese company I did some work for was fine as a YouTube viewer, no lags or anything doing that. Gave it away to a neighbour with a kid and apparently the kid was happy sat in front of it 🤷🏼‍♂️

I have no issue paying the premium for the Pro’s

For the tech inside of them it’s worth it for me, It’s the toy software that’s lets it down

When iPad sales are down, the last thing Apple wants to do is drive sales even lower.
Exactly. They need to cut the line down- regular iPad and iPad Pro. Make the regular one great, and the Pro exceptional. No more 50 shades of disappointing with the Pro lording it on top. Make the regular one as good as possible for $400, without gimping it every which way to make the Pro look better.

Yeah, Apple makes their greed too apparent at times and consumers respond negatively as they should.

It really does feel as though they're fleecing us lately- and I say that as someone that's been using their expensive gadgets since the last millennium! I'm happy to pay a premium, but I don't expect cut corners when I do- it feels like currently almost every device is being hamstrung in its base form to push us to buy extortionately priced upgrades- even the most premium "Pro" devices.

The conspiracy theories are funny. Pricing is based on a target GPM over COGS that Apple needs to hit.

That's all there is to it.
COGS… that’s a foreign language around here. You gotta talk in “we need more government regulation of Apple because da man is out to screw us” language to be understood around here.

You’re correct of course. ‘Preciate the sensible post.

That’s awesome because my Dad needs a new iPad Pro and my plan was to sell him the iPad Pro that I’m currently using which is the M2 so that I could get the new one when it comes out

I’m definitely happy that it could be only $160 more expensive than the current $799 starting price (the one I will get) because the rumors earlier indicated that it would’ve been much more than that so it will be a much cheaper upgrade for me this year

Good, I might move down to the 11” 2nd gen OLED model, hopefully in late 2025. I’m kinda tired of this massive 12.9” iPad and it’s too close in size to my new 14” MBP now.

If it launches this spring, I'm not sure if I'll buy it then. I may wait for the summer back to school sale for hopefully a CA$100 gift card.

Actually, last year Apple said such an iPad Pro edu purchase in Canada would get you a €100.00 gift card. Oops. :p

It would be tough to wait another 3 months with this iPad Air 2 though.
