I gotta say this new screen on the 3Gs is ammmazing. One wipe on your shirt or pants and it's prestine. I would suggest putting nothing on it. Enjoy your phone. Stop with all the crappy films and cases.

I think I agree with this. I've always had an invisible shield on my iPhones so I'm used to how the screen feels with those on. They protect the screen well but after a while I just want to peel them off due to dirty corners. The 3GS screen feels great IMO and I don't think I'll be buying a front shield for some time.

Just to point out the obvious, but you all realize your new 3G S came with a plastic coating already on it when you opened the box. When you peeled it off, was there any damage to the screen? I'm gonna say if a crappy throw away sheet of protective clingy plastic didn't damage your screen, then an overly expensive piece of clingy plastic film designed to protect said screen will not either.

Now THAT makes sense people....

There is some merit to the point that it comes with a plastic "shipping" film. However, that will be removed quickly and who knows what the longer term impact - if any - might be?

That said - I opted to put a spare Power Support film on - the first film I applied to my 3G went on so easy - no bubbles - the first time. 5 attempts later on the 3G S - I can not get the film protector on w/o bubbles.

Hmmmm

One other note here. Sure, the glass is very hard and it won't scratch like devices that use plastic. However, it does have this new coating like some eye glasses use. Have you ever seen those type of glasses when they get a scratch in them? The glasses aren't scratched but the coating is. You can clearly see the difference in white levels and/or contrast when looking at them. I could be wrong, but if the coating on the iPhone is essentially the same thing, you may see the same affect.

I'd love to not put a screen protector on my brand new iPhone 3G S but I just can't go without one. It isn't scratches I am worried about, it's fingerprints. I absolutely HATE fingerprints. I don't want to be wiping my phone on my shirt or my pants after using it for more than a few minutes. I have a screen protector on there that doesn't register fingerprints at all. It feels different, but I'd rather that than constantly be cleaning my phone.

Anyway, there's no need to argue over it :) It's all personal preference.

So now you're not only paranoid but you're also a hypocrite

As Versus pointed out, as long as there's no adhesive being used, I don't understand why you would be scared to put a static cling protector on.

The film never made it on - for some reason this one Power Support anti-glare, is bubble city. Puzzling as installation on the 3G was sooooooo easy.

I've posed the question - still not sure about risks but feel more confident as Power Support updated their site - even though I doubt they did any real "testing". Even Apple is giving mixed guidance about using screen protectors on the 3G S.

If you read my post carefully you will see I raised a question as to the risk of damage or not. They do use an odd terminology - static cling adhesive ??? I don't think any of us KNOW - I am coming to the conclusion that the risk of scratching the coating may be greater than any damage caused by using a protector.

Now I have to figure out why I have so many bubbles under the PS anti-glare.

I don't understand why people here are having problems with the crystal film. I've installed 3 on the G S models and have had no bubbles whatsoever. Straight out of the box, remove the packing film, put the crystal film on, not hard or bubbly at all.

The way I see it is if the crystal film causes a problem it's on Power Support & Apple for selling the product in the first place. I'm one of the folks in the camp of not wanting scratches on my screen. I had 2 first generation phones that got scratches from being in pockets with keys, etc. Lucky for me Apple was feeling generous back then and replaced them without blinking an eye. After that I've always used crystal film. I replace it about once every 8-12 months.

1yr here & zero scratches.
Almost 2 years here (1st gen iPhone) and zero scratches, too. If it wasn't for the visible edges around the earpiece and home key, you wouldn't be able to tell that it was there... :D

Bravo! Thinking outside the box. I researched oleophobic coatings and it ionizes with the glass. In other words, it is the glass. Furthermore, the films use static not adhesive, they'll be safe.

Installed two PS anti-glare protectors on two 3G S's... no problems whatsoever, not a single bubble at all on either one.

Not to repeat the obvious -- but here goes -- spend a little time with the 3GS and you'll see that it is NOT a fingerprint magnet. We already know that the screen is scratch resistant, and now it is fingerprint resistant as well.

Call me crazy, but I'm going completely naked on this one. I have the first gen phone, the 3G, and now the 3GS -- I've easily bought and used a dozen cases, and I hate them all for their bulk, ugliness, etc. I finally developed an uneasy relationship with my Vaja Top case despite its bulk, and despite the fact that it seemed to add oils to the screen itself. But after all that, I'm going naked now. Yes, the 3GS screen is THAT good! Go naked, the breeze feels good!

Screen protectors are useless.

Learned a neat trick in the Apple store recently. The Apple genius ran a knife down his iPhone screen and it didn't leave a mark.

To add. My current iPhone (2G) is over a year old and hasn't got a mark on the screen at all. The only thing thats scratched is the chrome around the sides.

Seriously? He ran a knife down his screen? Sharp? Blunt? I would definitely not try that at home ;)

Right now I am going naked without a screen protector on my 3G S. I am thinking I may stay that way, but another part of me is paranoid.

So, can someone summarize the screen protectors that are certified to be safe with the 3G S??

(Note: Currently I have some SwitchEasy screen protectors that came with my Colors case the other day; SwitchEasy told me they haven't tested their screen protectors with the 3G S yet).

Glass is harder than metal, which is why you can so easily blunt your nice set of non-serrated steak knives by banging them against plates while cutting.

The only things likely to scratch an iPhone screen are sand, asphalt, or bricks. Keep them away and you should be fine.

So whats the consensus: Naked or Covered

Naked. I used to use a PS Crystal film thingy on my old 3G and it got all scratched up. Peeled it off and realised that while you can see fingerprints easier it's actually a lot easier to clean the screen without the protector.

The new 3GS screen is even better, a quick wipe with my shirt and smudge marks are gone.

I am using the Power Support Crystal Film Set on the 3G-S and it applied and looks fine, no bubbles or anything.

i used to use the antiglare film set from powersupport, only to cut down on glare and fingerprints.

I forgot just how much more vibrant the screen is without the film.

I'm going to go naked on the screen for the 3GS. Fingerprints wipe off cleanly and easily and the colors are so much nicer
