Yet another reason not to buy Samsung, but this time purely 100% on moral reasons.

Then you should also stop buying Sony, Coca Cola, Pepsi, Bud Light, Adidas, Nike, Gatorade, Powerrade, Mcdonalds, the list goes on and on...

Imagine what a reading teacher would think while reading some of these posts! People commenting on an article and totally missing what it actually said.

:p

People see what they want to see and what people want to see never has anything to do with the truth.

Russian Olympics?

This is utter crap. I've already decided to never buy a Samsung product. Now I can't watch the Olympics. No Samsung, there is this thing called freedom and you can just pound your "rules" up your arse.

Really?! I'm not watching them because of that country's shocking human rights record. Its disgusting treatment of its local population around Sochi and its appalling distribution of wealth and social services. This is why I will not be watching the winter olympics or their world cup which they 'bought' by bribing the Olympics Committee.

This is the main reason.

Means... Athletes will just get Note 3 (FREEE!) and still using their iPhones.

Samsungs knows it...

If Samsung has paid sufficient sum of money to each athletes, I don't see a problem with this. It would have to be fairly substantial sum, however.

Heck, if Samsung buys me new iPhone every year, I would gladly use an iPhone case with Samsung logo on it.

P.S. Ironically, this particularly MacRumor forum post has Samsung ad all over the place.

I think it should also be noted the sheer number of people on here who CANNOT READ is really shocking.

For instance on the very front page in this news story:

Olympics sponsor Samsung is reportedly dropping Galaxy Note 3 smartphones in athletes' goodie-bags, though the gift comes with a catch: a supposed ban on any other device branding, iPhone or otherwise, during the opening ceremony.

So to those many on here asking, YES Samsung are giving them all phones.

but do they force the athletes to only eat from their menu? same thing.

Neither Samsung nor IOC are forcing the athletes to participate in the olympics either so yeah, it's the same.
On the other hand, don't you see the difference between massive exposure of a certain branding during the opening ceremony vs athletes dining during their free time?

I didn't read through all 14 pages, so I apologize if someone already mentioned this. Interesting how the "sponsors" single out Apple. I wonder if other phone manufacturers have to cover up their logo as well?

Usually, when sponsors do this, they single out their main competitor.

ie.
Nike vs Adidas
Pepsi vs Coca Cola
Gatorade vs Powerade
Playstation vs Xbox

Disqualification for using anything other than sponsored companies?
Wow IOC are the biggest A@@h****.

Sponsorship money above all.

Don't see the problem here. Presumably Samsung have paid a lot of money to be an official sponsor. They're entitled to get max value for that during the games.

It is not to see what brand of phone the athletes use...:roll eyes:

Patten infringement I can understand, but this is so petty.

Clearly someone that doesn't have a bloody clue about worldwide sponsorship agreements. UNBELIEVABLE.

Yes. And non Coca-Cola products, non-McDonalds fast food joints, & any other non Olympic sponsor or supplier. This is par for the course. In fact it's trademark infringement for a non sponsor to use the word Olympics in an ad or promotion. Of course Apple us a lightning rod. Pepsi not so much, but be assured if an athlete walked into an Olympic venue with a Pepsi logo shirt they'd be yanked out & fast.

Wouldn't it be funny if Apple give away 1000 iPhone to any athletes who want one, specially those not from the U.S. and see how many will show up at the opening and closing ceremony. :D

What do the athletes have to do with any of that? Sure don't by Sochi Oly merchandise I get that, but not watching is dumb. Would you not have watched Jesse Owens humiliate Hitler in '36 too?

I hope someone, soon, brings suit against Samsung based on the First Amendment.

I wasn't aware the 1st amendment applies to international organizations. And on international soil.

Also - there's no violation of 1st amendment rights. Especially given that when competing in the olympics you agree to certain terms and agreements.

Would it be a safe bet that you are someone who complains about phone contracts after you've signed one without reading it?

nobody is forcing the ioc to arrange the events either, what's your point?

if apple, the company, was involved in hijacking the commercial value of the event i'd see the issue. but they're not. all apple gear at the event will be personal belongings, not something the athletes received in a goodie bag, with a catch even, last time they visited an apple store.

i wonder if the samsung goodie bag is even optional.

Bravo! Great post! I wish there was a thumbs up icon. Jesse Owens is a good example.

I don't like Samsung and I like Apple, but Samsung just reminds athletes that mentioning any non-Olympic sponsor brands including brands on clothing etc is prohibited by the rules. And as a sponsor it has the right to give athletes free phones just like Coca-Cola being a sponsor can give away free Coke. Maybe it's even a some kind of good will "you know you can't use your phone during opening because its shiny logo will be seen by millions worldwide, so we give you a free replacement phone for this case". I don't know about Samsung phones too much but their logos are actually unnoticeable from a distance if there're any.

Apple did a very clever thing when it started to use large Apple logo on the back of its products )

Wow guys, this is normal practice.

Something similar happened with the first Spiderman movie, where Sony wanted to hide Samsung's logo during the scene that happens in Time Square.

It is a very common practice and I can assure you that any other company would've done the same if they were the main sponsor, including Apple but then again, does Apple ever sponsor anything? Their fault, not Samsung's.

Point taken, however I believe this is slightly different. A company sponsoring (or creating) a movie might want to remove visible sponsorship or paid advertising from scenes that movie.

However here the athletes are simply using the devices that they prefer, and Samsung is asking them to hide that. Samsung arent sponsoring the athletes. Apple arent sponsoring the athletes. The Athletes prefer Apple products, and a company that has very little to do with them wants to hide that.

I know similar things might happen with sports brands and so on, but it doesnt make it any less annoying. Like others have said - seems like a schoolyard.

Perspective. It's for one event. Only. It's not for the whole duration of the Olympics.
