It's not that bad. You should have seen some of the control freakery around the London Olympics. Besides, your average athlete isn't necessarily made of money, and the Note 3 is a pretty cool device. The quid quo pro suggested is only going to upset the most fanatical Apple fan.

This news doesn't so much upset as it amuses me. Already this morning, I have seen this article being posted on 4 different websites.

What sort of publicity do you see for Samsung and Apple respectively?

This is perfect example of an non-issue made an issue.

Lol, you're living in your own dreamland if you think professional athletes have any desire to be rebellious on behalf of Apple.

Did you think they would do that for free? Alternatively, wouldn't you think that working hard to be the best in your sport, only to be told by rich, fat, old men and a huge company what to do, and threatened that all your hard work would be for nought if you don't do as the rich, fat, old men and the huge Korean company tell you, wouldn't make one rebellious?

They're just asking to cover the logo. You make it sound like they're asking for their first born child...

Some of the comments in here are ridiculous.

The Olympics are sponsored so that athletes do not have to be. Samsung will contribute millions and millions to help pay for the event, which allows amateurs (and there are many amateurs) to compete on equal grounds.

Covering up the occasional logo is not a big deal. The world will continue to turn.

No, they pay millions so that a bunch of rich, fat, old men who have taken control of the games can become richer and fatter.

They're just asking to cover the logo. You make it sound like they're asking for their first born child...

Interesting attitude. I suppose you are not American, right? Because if you were, you would clearly say that you are a citizen of the freest country in the world and no ********** company or olympic committee is going to tell you what phone to use and whether to cover up a logo on your phone. Just joking... If you are American you are going to do as you are told of course :-(

The olympics exists to peddle advertising. It is all about corporate sponsorship, selling TV rights, selling mechandise - and a some sport.

What Samsung are doing is the same as every other company at every other large event that uses sponsorship. And it's more likely to be the IOC's rules rather than Samsung's

Look at McDonald's at the London Olympics. No other fast food could be sold.

Get over it you lot!

No surprise really, since the Olympics have become commercial and corrupt. A huge "exclusivist" sponsor like Samsung is just feeding the corruption engine of the Olympics further.

I hope to see several athletes "accidentally" disregard the logo ban.

Wow. Feels like high school. Why is samsung so insecure if their devices rock so much.

Because they're still jealous of Apple's success? That's why they're so insecure.

I agree with an earlier post of how seeing everyone only using Samsung would jar their connection that the games are "real." It would be odd and contrived to only see one tech company being used by all people in the opening ceremony.

It is similar to me when I watch tv shows which have done this for years. Go watch a few episodes of "The Mindy Project" and all you'll see is a world where Windows 8 and Nokia exist. Watch old episodes of "The Office" and you'd think only HP exists. Even "Modern Family" had a stint of using only Apple products, in fact they had an episode in the first season which involved Phil seeking out the iPad when it was released in 2010. Even Netflix's "House of Cards" got in the promotional considerations provided by Apple game by primarily featuring iMacs and iPhones in nearly every scene.

My point is, I guess, that this is nothing new. Companies have been pushing products on TV for years, but it doesn't seem right when an gaming event such as the Olympics which to many represent individual effort for the sake of one's country has become so closed due to sponsorships. I believe we're losing sight of the spirit of the games!

If you were participating in an event made possible by Coke, would you waive a Pepsi around? I am a die-hard Apple fan, but if I were an Olympic athlete (sadly not even close) and they asked me to cover my Apple logo, I would do it because that's what the rules state, and I think there are better things to take a moral stand on than this.
If I was going to have a Pepsi anyway and coca cola asked me to cover the Pepsi logo I would not and it would never buy another coca cola again.

Quick, somebody print up a bunch of stickers that say I Hate Samsung and Samsung Sucks and get them to the athletes. That'll show those weaselly B*******.

Yeah!

I'm pretty sure it's still going to be obvious which devices are Apple devices and how many people have them.

That's besides the point the point is they are asking you to cover the apple logo. I hate them so much already now I hate then 50X more. That's a horrible thing to do and shows weakness

This is quite normal for large events. Has been the case with the World Cup and European Champions League for years.

I bet if Apple or Samsung became a major partner in the Super Bowl, the same thing would happen. Already happens with their other main sponsors.

That's exactly what Samsung is doing: donating 2'500 phones to the athletes against the promise to refrain from yielding any other brand during the opening ceremony.

Could backfire. At the London Olympics everyone got a pair of Dr Dre headphones, the local secondhand shops, pawn shops etc, were full of them.

Be funny if there were a glut of samsung phones hitting the secondhand shops near the olympic venues!

Sounds about right for Android; they have to bribe and beg for people to use their devices just to get anybody to buy them.

Really? You don't see Coke asking people to cover up Pepsi bottles at events like the Superbowl.

Its so funny ! the athletes have to go without any sponsorship what so ever but samsung can sponsor the olympics.. USOC has really out done themselves ... I bet the steak dinners are mighty fine boys, might fine....

Society has completely lost it ..

I agree....let's ban sponsorship in the Olympics completely, heck for all sports....they should be able to make enough money off of the ticket sales and broadcast rights alone.

IOC is not asking attendees to cover their phones.

And coke is not the official sponsor of the Superbowl, they only played an ad. Bud Light is and no competing brand was allowed in the stadium.

Wow guys, this is normal practice.

Something similar happened with the first Spiderman movie, where Sony wanted to hide Samsung's logo during the scene that happens in Time Square.

It is a very common practice and I can assure you that any other company would've done the same if they were the main sponsor, including Apple but then again, does Apple ever sponsor anything? Their fault, not Samsung's.

This is normal practice, but also a case where normal practice is silly. Reebok and Nike used to get into this (and probably still do) at the Olympics. Apple probably doesn't bother with sponsorships because it doesn't need to do them.

That said, the IOC is an entity that hides behind its "not for profit" status. It's become quasi-governmental with the disadvantage of essentially selling itself every 4 years to the highest bidder. For all the talk about "sustainability" and "responsible planning" cities and countries spend increasing billions of dollars on white elephant stadiums that are used for 2 weeks and then gather dust after that. Russia is spending $50 billion on the Sochi games. Think about all the wheeling and dealing that goes on every time a professional sports team wants a city or state to build them a stadium and then multiply it by 100. That's the IOC.
