I ordered the previous version MBP 2.5GHz, 512 MB & 4GB ram new on the clearance site from Apple.com for $1600. I ordered it last thursday at 3pm, and they shipped it THAT night from Sacramento. It was supposed to be at my place on Saturday between 11am-1130am. I was tracking it, and the fedex driver posted on the website (tracking) that "customer not home/business closed". My girlfriend was home all day and didnt hear anyone knock. There was no note left on the door stating i missed a package. SO i called fedex and let them know that i didnt get my packaged and that it said i wasnt home. Well an hour later i get a call from the local Fedex depot saying that the driver would swing back by, that he had the wrong package. Sure enough at 5pm, i get a knock on the door. I didnt check the package either, and signed for it and he was done.

It worked out for me, but i didnt check the box (which is not a smart idea) and it kinda is unsettling that fedex wasnt going to come back that day. If it says it was attempted delivery, there would be something sort of notification. I wonder if he got into trouble...

On a side note, i think for high end dollar stuff, they should check id. All the driver said was, "are you Dustin?". I signed. If he went to a neighbors or something, they'd have a free MBP.

glad everything worked out for you!

I don't think they will know it's high end dollar stuff unless the box has an apple logo or some high end stuff logo on it.

Makes me wonder, does your box has an apple logo on it?

If Apple did put their logos on there, I'm sure these problems would be a lot more common and there will be more threads like this. They ship in plain brown boxes to conceal their packages contents.

are you sure my friend? talk a look at this http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi-EO0nYseI and enjoy the music

I have no idea about the refurbs but all the new models come in plain brown cardboard boxes (see my photos earlier in this thread). In fact there's nothing on the box that indicates Apple at all, just some tech company in China. HOWEVER, the packing slip is indeed on the outside & mine was tampered with. I've ordered Apple stuff before and the packing slip is always in perfect shape just folded inside the plastic pouch. Mine arrived all sliced up in several areas, I believe they cut it out to see what was inside then put it back on the box.

That is a shocking and salutary tale; I'm delighted that it is going to work out well for you and well done also to Apple customer care for addressing the problem so fiarly and promptly.

Their excellent customer care is one of the reasons I switched to Apple computers earlier this year. Let us know how this story ends and good luck.

Cheers

Well I'll know in a few hours. Shipping is scheduled for Tues morning, I just got back from a trip and it should be here sometime this morning...guess I should try and get some sleep (if I can). What are the odds that it will actually arrive? The way things have gone nothing will surprise me. I won't let the TNT guy get away so fast this time no matter what happens. I'll update after he shows up.

my best friend purchased a computer from ebay. On the day when it arrived he signed for it and the royal mail chappie hopped off into his van. He too picked up the parcel to find it was a little light, and the computer wasn't in there. Ebay said they would try to resolve the matter but there was very little they could do, paypal said that he didn't have protection against his purchase, and the seller claimed the package had been sent out with the computer in the box.
After ringing Royal Mail two weeks later the good news was that the computer had been left in a sorting office, and had to be repacked because they suspected the parcel was suspicious, unfortunatley they had lost the address and therefore it was just waiting until somebody claimed it.
You couldn't make this sort of stuff up could you!

Had the same problem...

I had the same problem, but Apple support solved it quite fast and even offered a discount. Excellent client support.

Well the replacement actually came today as advertised - woot! :D

Its my first laptop so I'm just getting accustomed to it but I'm loving this machine! Apple just picked up where they left off w/ the stellar customer service! I received a phone call this morning from Apple to notify me the laptop was 'on the truck' and out for delivery. She said she'd call again in the afternoon to follow-up and make sure it made it here alright. Sure enough she did. Not only that but, again without asking, I was offered my choice of a gift certificate or a free wireless mighty mouse for the inconvenience of having gone through the delay w/ the theft. Wow. Seriously, I'd rather have just had received the initial machine in the first place but this is a very good token on Apple's behalf and shows they really do care what their customers think.

I seriously cannot say enough about Apple's customer service throughout this whole affair. I'll post pictures when I can get Mobile Me to accept my gallery through iWeb. :)

Thats actually really good news. This experience has been gut wrenching to say the least & I really hope they catch the scum who did this. These are dip***** not brain surgeons so I'm confident they'll screw up & get busted sooner or later.

Not sure if there was an option...lately I've been signing on digital tablets, do they have the "not checked" box on them?

Some people have said that once I signed for it I was legally responsible for the 'successfully delivered product' and both the courier & Apple were legally off the hook. Not that I take my legal advice from a rumors forum or anything; but that would be illegal of both those parties if what you say is true and the courier won't let you open it before signing. Thats blackmail in a way..."sorry, you can't inspect it w/o signing it...ooooohhh too bad, there's nothing there...oh well its *your* loss since y ou signed for it! hahahah"

Trust me, it was far-fetched for ME too
Here's some photos of what broke my heart into a hundreds of millions of pixelated pieces. The last one shows where they tore the tape off the sticker causing a bit of the bar code to come off before putting the replacement tape overtop. Other than the bar code coming off they did a decent job making the box look like nothing was tampered with.

thanks for the pictures

there is also this situation:

you were mistakenly sent a 'dummy box' that is used to 'pad out' a pallet to full capacity.23 on a pallet leaves an open section, can't have that,so empty boxes are used.possibly old ones for orders.
They don't check them.it will say whatever you ordered and someone grabs a fresh one off the pallet slaps your label on it and away it goes.
if it was opened by someone during the supply chain it will have the companys security seal/branded tape on it.
You said yer in sydney i know full well where when and how things are shipped out of there and stealing an empty bubblegum wrapper off the floor is next to impossible let alone a computer.
The brown boxes were sent to conceal the new designs too. They sat in our bonded warehouse for weeks before the official announcement.
So it's highly unlikely someone actually stole it out of the box.
But they don't track things by weight and when you handle a few hundred of these a day 1kg seems no different to 4.7 after a while.

And take this advice from a forum on the internet (saves you googling it) you are legally responsible for something after you sign for it.That's why the first day when you get a job in a warehouse working in the recieving dock they tell you to firstly check a package for damage/tampering.If a box looks like it's been dropped you have the right to refuse delivery OR you can open and inspect it in front of the driver then you can choose to accept or refuse it.

You sign it = you got it.

I still find it hilarious you couldn't even be bothered to check it first before signing for a $2K+ item haha especially from TNT.was it a leb driver?

Now you're leaving us in suspense...did you take the certificate or the mouse??! :D;)

Glad my misery brought you some laughter out of all of this
It wasn't that I couldn't be bothered, I've never opened a box before signing, and by the sounds of it nor has very many (if any) people here on this forum. You see, before this I've received exactly what I've ordered 100% of the time. By the time I picked the box up and caught on that something was wrong the guy was pretty much gone. In shock I tried to stop him but couriers don't exactly daddle. According to Apple, no signing for the parcel doesn't mean I've received anything more than the "package." They are presently investigating this and whether it was a dummy box or theft they'll find out. What the heck is a "leb driver," ...lesbian? Lebanese?

Anyways, if anyone's interested I mixed some pics of the original package and the new one I received this morning.
From pain to pleasure. :)
