I won't sell it. The options are to return it together to Apple and wait until next month and buy the new Mac Pro or just to keep this gorgeous beast.

This is just me...
I'd keep it and then trade for a Nehalem Mac Pro in the Fall.
The Nehalem Mac Pro will have much better processors and much better video cards.

The machine is completely functional and futureproof in its current form. Even if Apple were to shock the world with an earth-shattering super computer for a couple of dollars, it would not change the fact that the current Mac Pro is more than capable.

There's also no guarantee that Mac Pros will be released at MacWorld. If they are released, there's then no guarantee that they'll even be "Shipping Now." There have been times when Mac Pros/Power Macs have taken months from "release" to "ship."

Personally, I'd just be overwhelmed with gratitude to even consider trading up. Not saying that the OP isn't overwhelmed with gratitude, of course. :)

If you need it now - keep it.

If you can wait - hold out for the better value

She'll understand considering you'll be getting more bang for HER buck.

Here's what you do: Ask yourself what it is you did that made your wife/girlfriend decide to buy you a Mac Pro. Figure that one out, then come back again and post it here... I desperately need to know...:eek::apple:

would like to know the answer to that also!
merry xmas!

Well, if you are like me and like to have the best and latest then return it.

A new update is round the corner, regardless of whether you'll take advantage of it or not, it is new, better technology. I'd exchange it for the latest Mac Pro when it comes.

From your wife/gf view, I'd be gutted if I got someone a present and a few weeks later it got updated and was a lot better for the same price.

Only a couple of weeks to go.

If you didnt notice. the Mac Pros are way more advanced then the Mac Pro u have now. Im not sure when you got yours but it seems a little old.
I got it last year november and its IDENTICAL to the ones out right now.....just its not upgraded to the 8 core model.....
My MBP has close to the same specs are your Pro.
Your very wrong with this. The MBP has a max CPU of 2.6ghz x 2 cores vs my mac pro runs at 2.66ghz x 4 cores. Big difference. Also the xeon is a faster CPU then the core 2 duo. The mac pro has a faster frontside bus, can except way more ram and is expandable. So good try but the MBP is not on par power was. Thats not to say it isn't a great laptop.....

I just ran the situation past my wife, a technophobe. She says anyone who is thoughtful enough to buy a Mac person a MacPro would be understanding enough to have it returned if the situation (of an immanent upgrade) was explained to her. I say return it now and reap the rewards on the 15th. Just my two cents.

Merry Christmas to all!

What an incredible Christmas gift. A thing of beauty. Am I going to regret it if I don't exchange it for the upcoming Penryn? Will the lifespan of the Penryn be so much greater?

These things (2.66 Xeon MPs) are so reliable, quiet and beautiful. I do some video rendering and a fair amount of CS3, but most of my time is spent writing and doing the usual webstuff, iTunes, email.

She got if for me primarily to drive my ACD 30" and I must say that they make a handsome pair.

Does anybody want to talk me into returning it for a Jan. 14 purchase? Does anybody want to talk me into keeping this? It is GORGEOUS!

Netdog,

A lot of guys would give a left bank of ram from a Mac Pro for a "She" (girlfriend, mother, sister, significant other and etc) like you have.:D

Now that's how rumors get started!:D

Keep it, it was a gift.

The guy in the shop should have told her she was buying a product that is going to be updated real soon now.
Although we know that the update is going to happen, there has not been any public announcement or anything like that, and plus, he would rather get the sale in now while they can.

First of all its a gift and you should keep it!

The Mac Pro is a great computer, much better in every regard than all other Macs (iMacs, Macbook Pros, etc) and its meant to last. Why keep wondering if the upgrade comes? It will eventually come. Will this make it a worse computer? I bought mine two weeks ago (see my sig for specs) and I love it! The sheer power, expandability and great design make it a unique choice. Enjoy it! You didn't have to pay for it! I had...

When choosing computers we have to think if the current models do what we want them to, and not think that a new model will come. Of course it will come. I don't see the point waiting for something better....Its idiotic.
If you think that the new Mac Pros will be so much better then, what can I say...

Keep it! It's not worth paying the restocking fee and it sounds like plenty of computer for your usage. Plus, what if a new MP isn't announced at MacWorld? Or if it is announced, it isn't shipping for 60 days? You could be waiting a long time.

More importantly... not worth the risk of insulting the gift giver. Kinda like saying, "Nice try, but if you did any research, you would know it would've been best to wait another month." NOT A GOOD MESSAGE TO SEND!

I Cant Frankly believe this thread. Someone who has bought you a truly amazing gift (who your not even married to) and spent alot of cash on it. And its an Amazing present and a huge token of her obvious love for you.

And for you to want to trade it in for something which you dont even know is going to be released on Jan 15th is in my eyes crazy. People in the world would be so happy for something of less than 1% of the value of that gift.

Be Grateful and enjoy a product which is going to last you and serve you for years to come. And of course give your girlfriend the love she deserves for buying you it ;)

My Thoughts
John

Keep it. What a thoughtful gift. It will probably have more than enough power for 99% of what you'll need it for (unless you are some super hardcore video/3D user in which case you'd probably already have one of these). These computers do have high resale value, even years later, for good reason. So go and thank her, then thank her again and again. Cherish the moment.

For f**k's sake people, the rumored Penryn MP doesn't make the Woodcrest model obsolete. The Woodcrest model still a fast machine. More than sufficient for the tasks you want to do. What Penryn will give you, in most cases, will at most be a few seconds in performance.

Keep your present. And upgrade the processor and graphics card as they become available.

Note, by the way, that if you return this, you'll almost certainly never get another gift like this again. Whether she seems upset or happy with your decision, she's going to remember she once went all out for her guy and got you a top of the line machine that Just Wasn't Good Enough. In your greed for the latest and best, you could easily hurt her in ways that won't become apparent for a long while to come. Just something to keep in mind.

You came to the wrong forum, man. Most of the cats here don't have a girlfriend, they still live in mom's basement, and are more stimulated by computer hardware than a pair of boobs. Thus, as you can tell, many don't understand ettiquette when dealing with the girlfriend.

Keep it, enjoy it. Girlfriend or no girlfriend, you got a nice piece of machinery right there.

By far the best post on this topic - makes you realise there is more to life than just having the best computer.

I might reconsider my view on it.

I'm sure glad I'm not in your shoes. I guess maybe you can't even discuss it with her as you may not want to upset her if you decide to keep it after discussing the situation. I think from your recent posts it is a powerful enough machine for you, but if you are using this to make a living and you can get more out of whatever apple release (let's be honest we have a good idea of what it will be and when it is comming, but then we don't know for sure) it is worth considering. People return gifts all the time, they say it's the thought that counts, no reason that should work with both crappy gifts and good ones.

Even if you did return it, you'd be returning it on speculative reasoning... a no-no considering the risks here.

Keep it, enjoy that 30in. screen!

PS It's probably going to be way too much computer for you right now... I have a 2.66x4 and rarely push it to 60%. Granted, I work with Photoshop and Aperture.

If you have all those positive things to say about it then why return it? From the sounds of what you said, it will meet your needs for many years to come. Especially since it was a gift and you didnt know you where getting it so why bother with considering the upgrade?

Keep it, Use it, it will make you happy and most importantly it will make her so happy to see you enjoying it.

x2... In addition, if/when the new MP does come out how long will it take until it becomes as stable of a platform as the present. Even Apple has been known to produce things that have some teething problems (present iMac freeze ups are an example). You are looking another 2-4 months after release date before that model reaches the maturity of the present MP, and even then this current MP will still do fine for the next 4-5 years easy.
