Sure can and they would be the QX9650 and QX9770 (Which wont actually be released but makes intel look good)

Clock for Clock the 45nm chips really arent that much better. The extra cache may help in some programs and im sure it will be a nice upgrade for some but IMO not enough of a reason to sell a gift of an already awesome laptop

I know what im talking about when it comes to computer hardware and yes your partially correct in saying that I would be better in those forums but you dont have to be rude about it.

Now please stop hijacking this thread.

Well see here is your problem. We are talking about the Mac Pro which is a desktop, not the MBP which is a laptop.
As the Mac Pro if updated would be moving from dual dual-core Woodcrests to dual quad-core Harpertowns. That is a significant difference. Double the cores and quadrupling the cache, faster clock speeds too.

Now if we are talking about moving from a current C2D notebook to a 45nm C2D notebook, sure the difference isn't terribly significant. However that is not what we are talking about.

So it would appear that you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to computer hardware. Try again.

Who has put you in this position?

I think you'll find the answer to that one is a little closer to home...

It sounds like this is more machine than you need. Why you would return a gift and get an even better machine is beyond me. Keep it and in a year or two wipe it and trade up if you feel the need.

The penryn wont be too much faster than the C2D, Im not completely sure about the chipset on a mac mobo but you will most likely be able to pop a penryn in there if you want to anyway :)

I would have to say keep it. It was a gift.

I know exactly what im talking about, I know people with 45nm engineering samples and at stock speeds they arent that much better than C2Ds :)

That is all

I know what im talking about.....

Clearly, you DON'T know what you are talking about TotalNoob. This is the MAC PRO forum, not the Macbook Pro forum.

You did the right thing!

She insisted we take it back today and wait, and so we did. No restocking fee here. Have a £1700 Apple gift certificate here on my desk waiting for the big announcement...whenever that may come. What can I say? She wants me to have the best.

Watching them take it away, still unopened, was heart-wrenching. The 2.66 is a gorgeous machine. Here's to hoping that there will be an even better one soon!

I have had this happen several times in my life, and have always opted for the return or exchange. She will be much happier knowing that you are happy, trust me. :)

Unless you are a music producer, as I. Then this computer is useless.
This MacPro is an awesome piece of technology.

This computer is used for HARDCORE graphics designers, Music recording. Or anything that demands POWER.

If you are in basic to moderate graphic designing, or simple to moderate websurfing, music, videos, and the basic needs of a computer.
SELL.....

I do a LOT of cs3 stuff. messing around or if im creating an image. it runs AMAZING on my lowest system. my macbook.

You would be much better with an iMac, or a Macbook/Pro

Not to mention ALOT cheaper.

Anymore questions as i have a Mac Pro.

totally offtopic but... Myk Gall? like ball?

Well, thats not the same...he still wants the MP, but thinks an upgraded version in 3 weeks would be more worth it, not that she could have bought him a better pressie...

I say keep it, Its a perfectly fine computer and It was a nice Gift. Wow some Geeks are so Autistic. There is more to life than latest specs.

Since "she" is most likely the wife, I doubt she would be offended if he returned it for a few weeks and then used the money to buy the SAME computer but updated. If he explains to her how much he clearly appreciates it, but wants to make her gift last as long as it possibly can, i'm sure she'll understand that. It's not like he's returning it for something else completely, he's just making sure her gift is the most bang for the buck and any wife would probably be happy he is thinking ahead and practically :)

Sorry but not a good idea. If I was in his shoes I would be grateful for such a gift and appreciate it for what it is and use it for the next few years. Forget specs etc.. The machine is perfectly capable and there is more to life than trying to get the latest and greatest.

I Cant Frankly believe this thread. Someone who has bought you a truly amazing gift (who your not even married to) and spent alot of cash on it. And its an Amazing present and a huge token of her obvious love for you.

And for you to want to trade it in for something which you dont even know is going to be released on Jan 15th is in my eyes crazy. People in the world would be so happy for something of less than 1% of the value of that gift.

Be Grateful and enjoy a product which is going to last you and serve you for years to come. And of course give your girlfriend the love she deserves for buying you it ;)

My Thoughts
John

Nice to see some folks with common sense and a good mind :)

She said all along to trade it in. Now that it seems clear the new Mac Pro will be released in less than two weeks, she is very pleased that we will get a better machine. Given that it has been a year and a half, we expect a significant upgrade, not a bump.

Common Sense?

Nice to see some folks with common sense and a good mind :)

You call accepting an obsolete expensive gift from a loved one common sense!

He did the right thing by returning and waiting. Both he and his girlfriend will now share in his joy of getting the new Apple 8-core Mac Pro. :D

Man am I jealous.

2.8 x 8 (2.66 x 4)
12GB Cache (6)
2GB RAM (1)
320GB Drive (250GB)
Blue Tooth (x)

She and I are both thrilled. Man, it was hard to make that swap for multiple reasons, but the new machine looks to be even greater, and should last longer and get better as Multicore becomes supported by more software.

Yipeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Marriage Thread

Let's call this the this the "The Marriage (girlfriend) Thread"

Some people have better relationships than others.

I couldn't read every post on this thread but if my wife would get pissed if I returned her gift (this is always progressing tech) to wait for the soon arriving next best thing.. then we would not have a good relationship.

It's the thought that counts and she will be more happy if I am, and not pretending..bc women always figure that out....

Great it worked out for you :)
