Well i think even if there isn't a major redesigned etc... there will at least be a silent upgrade to new cpu's etc..

This is true, but the keynote is no place for the Mac Pro these days...it's all iPhone/iPod/iLife land.

There is nothing for them to do with these products. They have all been updated. This notion that it is a consumer show is silly. It is a show for Mac stuff. Whatever Apple has to do at that time they will do.

  1. AppleTV 2.0 + Movie Rentals (this will be a big feature)
  2. Ultraportable Laptop
  3. New iPhone Features (not 2.0, but software-based features)
  4. Speed bumps for existing consumer products
  5. Financials including record Mac and Leopard sales, iPhone sales, increasing OS X market share, iTMS success, etc.

That could all take up a lot of time.

No Mac Pro then? Ok, I'm not optimistic either. MacWorld gets a lot of press these days, and a chip update will not get much news when other PC makers are making the same kind of update. The keynotes tend to introduce new innovative products, mac or not. If there are some amazing new built-in features for the Mac Pros, that would merit the bandwidth, otherwise it will be silent as moviecutter speculates.

1. Not enough on this. This is purely speculative (just like iTunes 8)
2. Maybe (we have heard as much about this as we have the Mac Pro in terms of substantial info IMO)
3. Doubt it, even they do it won't be big
4. There is nothing to bump, Penryn won't be shipping in bulk for them to bump all the consumer products not to mention they just saw bumps
5. Thats a given

The Mac Pro will be in there, maybe it won't be big. But it hasn't been changed at all since August 2006. The stuff they need is here.

I understand it hasn't happened yet. But it has to happen at some point. I doubt they released the thing to let it sit and rot for years with the same specs. When they released they placed it a monster workstation that was cheaper than the competition. They need to do something now for that to be true.

Has anyone considered that maybe, according to Apple's accountants, that the Mac Pro was a financial bomb? Maybe it's like the newton of the 21st century. For all we know it undershot their sales projections by a long shot and they are unsure on whether to continue the line or rework a totally new desktop workstation.

Uh, didn't they just update it in March?

netdog, I'd keep it. Call me biased, but in my family, we aren't allowed to sell/trade/return gifts. It's disrespectful and can be hurtful.

I doubt it. They have been selling Power Macs for how long? I imagine if they weren't selling well it would have been apparent long before the Mac Pro.

No, they added an option in April. A ridiculously overpriced option when you look at the current state of Intel Xeons.

Selling/Trading/Returning gifts is normal. It is not disrespectful if you explain it to the person who gave it to you. And if you are hurt by someone returning a gift you have some deeper issues that need to be addressed IMO.

I discussed it with my girlfriend and she says 1) she wouldn't have bought it in the first place since she knows I am waiting 2) if she had, she would have no problem with me returning it.

I can only assume that the person giving a gift wants you to be completely happy with it. If you are not there is nothing wrong with returning it. And if they actually do care about your happiness I would think the person would have no problems with you making that decision.

Ok everyone, let's try to get back on topic. Speculate what will happen at the keynote in other threads (as interesting as your speculations are, of course).

As for the OP, what did you end up doing? I hope you kept it.

After 165 posts on a simple question, I think he's confused!

They haven't shown off anything related to the Mac Pro, Cinema Display, or XServes in YEARS. This is a CONSUMER show...deal with it.

1) AppleTV was introed a YEAR ago. You'll see an update with regards to iTunes movie rentals and some other features. Not to mention a hard drive increase. The 40GB option is anemic at best...especially at $300
2) This is definite (Ultraportable laptop)
3) There will most definitely be an iPhone update with software features, especially with regards to the 3rd party app development. iPhone is Apple's new iPod, they're going to showcase it at this show for sure.
4) iMacs could see a refresh. Sure they were updated recently, but so were the iMac G5s, only 3 months or so before the Intel iMac was introduced..AT MWSF.
5) You got 1 out of 5

The Mac Pro will be in there, maybe it won't be big. But it hasn't been changed at all since August 2006. The stuff they need is here.

Nope, keep dreaming. Nobody buys Mac Pros. Those that do, the media professionals, and number crunchers, aren't clamoring for an update. It's their LEAST selling machine aside from the Mac Mini maybe, you won't see them talk about it here. Trust me. If it were NAB, you'd be dead on, but MacWorld? Not a chance.

P.S. Multimedia...is that you?

I enjoy how you pretend to actually know what is going on. It is pretty funny really. Like I said we will see.

Just because it has been yeas since they demoed something like the Pro at Macworld doesn't mean that will always be the case.

I'm glad I can provide some entertainment. THis comes from educated speculation, seeing patterns, and working for the mothership for 3 years...but yeah...mainly I'm just known for picking on newbies. It's all in good fun though.

Educated speculation? How does that not include the imminent update of the Mac Pro? Many people have speculated what the specs would be, based on logic no less.

And I will say for a year where the rumors are tight you sure can roll out a good set list for Macworld. Can you forward me the PDF? Thanks!

It's very simple. The Mac Pro is not a product that is meant for this kind of show. It's not something that Steve is going to spend any time on during his keynote. IF...and this is a HUUUUUGE IF, he does mention it, it'll be as simple as:

"And now we move on to our professional desktops. We introduced these over a year ago, and it's time for an update. So starting today, 8-cores will be standard across the board...starting at $2499. We're really excited about this. Now, onto the iPhone..."

...and that's about it. With all the other things he's going to talk about, it's simply not a priority. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see an update until April at NAB, where the professional desktops have been updated lately. But we'd most likely see an update some weeks after the keynote. $2500 desktops just don't command the attention of consumers when their eye is squarely on iPods, iPhones, and consumer based Macs and software. Sorry bub.

There's no PDF, it's just educated speculation coming from years of following Apple's release/show patterns as an observer, stock holder, and employee.

great girl you have there. she's a keeper :)

i would be very, very tempted to return it and wait for jan. 14. BUT, before you do, obviously speak it over with her and ask if she'll be offended. If so, then keep it, if not, return it.

if you don't return it, it will be a fantastic machine for years to come. mine just hums although i am tempted to sell my dually G5 and buy another a new one on jan 14th :)

good luck!

You haven't really given any educated speculation.

There is nothing to be sorry about, I understand the current status of things. I personally don't care if they spend an hour or 30 seconds or no time at all on it. I know what the masses care about. I never said they have to spend the whole note on it. They simply need to update it. We can see this from patterns in the rest of their line; new chips, apple lags, update. I can see that from looking at the pattern any of the Macs over the last 2 years (excluding the Mac Pro and Xserve).

Oh but there is the Mini; new chips, apple lags, updates other products, new chip, apple lags, updates other products, mac mini gets leftovers.

Again. I don't care how much time they spend. I just don't really think calling this a "consumer" show really qualifies you in saying it won't be updated.

Anyhow. Lets call it quits. We have only a few weeks before we know for sure.

Um, no.
