I just wanted to say that all these responses about how women can't handle technology gifts being returned should be completely wrong. If you are with a woman that can't handle it, then you deserve to be unhappy. A person who freaks out about that has problems. It isn't a scrapbook that she made for you by hand, it is a consumer electronic. Normal women are not like this, it is a sign of immaturity and insecurity.

That being said, I think that you should return the computer and wait the measly two weeks.

I just ran the situation past my wife, a technophobe. She says anyone who is thoughtful enough to buy a Mac person a MacPro would be understanding enough to have it returned if the situation (of an immanent upgrade) was explained to her. I say return it now and reap the rewards on the 15th. Just my two cents.

Merry Christmas to all!

I agree - it's a great gift and I'd gush about it to her and say, it's so perfect, best gift ever. Then tell her that there is an good chance that there is going to be a big update to it in a few days would be okay with you you if we returned and YOUR gift to me was the newer model? It's still her gift to you and you get her on board with the it's the best thing ever (because it is just a fantastic gift, which goes without saying). Make it clear that you're not really returning it - just getting the same thing with a few newer things on it that weren't available in Dec. You're helping her give you the newer, better one and that's what she wanted to get for you - the best she could. Add kisses and hugs... more gushing about gift... I'm sure you've done plenty of that. Either way - congratulations on a great new computer.

YES!!! You rock. Exactly what I think. My girlfriend thanks you for being sensible unlike most of the folks here. :D

She's insisting that I wait. It's me who is the sentimental one about this particular one embodying the gift. God, it is so hard not to open it, and I can just see Jobs getting through MW with no mention of a Pro. LOL. Anyway, it's going back to Apple. If we are going to spend that much money, we are going to get something reasonably current. Incredible that Apple has put us in such an extreme position.

If nothing on Jan. 15th by Apple, how long will you wait before buying the same Mac Pro back after you have already paid a restocking fee of 15 percent? Or will you hold out "until hell freezes over" or Jobs relents and give in and updates the Mac Pro.

To the OP: Be sentimental and keep it! It's an awesome gift, the update may or may not happen in January, and the speculated performance difference is not a quantum leap forward in any case.

Think of it this way: by just going ahead and giving you the MP as a gift, your wife has relieved you of the usual obligatory handwringing over whether you bought at the right time. Just open the box, enjoy that beast, and enjoy your wife and her superb taste in gifts!

One thing to consider. Is if a new Mac Pro is introduced at MWSF, what will be the availability date? It seems Apple is getting more quick at stocking the stores than before, but I bet if announced we will see at least a month delay.

Also, what if you return the Mac Pro and pay the restocking fee. Then there is no announcement at MWSF. So you go ahead and purchase the same Mac Pro. Then a couple of months later Apple without fanfare introduces a Mac Pro update on Tuesday.

Not trying to be a pain. But I think in today's world, it is best to get what you need (not want) today because technology changes quickly and unexpectedly.

Probably a good idea.

I won't sell it. The options are to return it together to Apple and wait until next month and buy the new Mac Pro or just to keep this gorgeous beast.

It sounds like this is more machine than you need. Why you would return a gift and get an even better machine is beyond me. Keep it and in a year or two wipe it and trade up if you feel the need.

There is no restocking fee in the UK in the first 14 days after purchase, even if you have opened the box and used the Mac.

She insisted we take it back today and wait, and so we did. No restocking fee here. Have a £1700 Apple gift certificate here on my desk waiting for the big announcement...whenever that may come. What can I say? She wants me to have the best.

Watching them take it away, still unopened, was heart-wrenching. The 2.66 is a gorgeous machine. Here's to hoping that there will be an even better one soon!

Not only is your girlfriend generous, she is smart too! Good luck with getting the computer you want. I don't think you should have too long of a wait until the next revision. Kind of reminds me of when I had to wait for my MacPro and it was definitely worth it for piece of mind.

On another note, it's amazing how people keep going on about you keeping the computer simply because it was a gift. Surely they don't read the posts? My guess is that people will still be posting in here about protecting your girlfriends feelings long after you have bought your new machine.

Well yeah, for that kind of money she wouldnt want a better comp to come along in 3 weeks! However if you would have kept it you would have been fine with it... And i have a funny feeling that in 16 days you 'll be going back to the store to pickup that same exact computer lololol
you returned a sure gift based on a rumor!!

You lucky Dog to have such a generous understanding woman.

The penryn wont be too much faster than the C2D, Im not completely sure about the chipset on a mac mobo but you will most likely be able to pop a penryn in there if you want to anyway :)

What an incredible Christmas gift. A thing of beauty. Am I going to regret it if I don't exchange it for the upcoming Penryn? Will the lifespan of the Penryn be so much greater?

These things (2.66 Xeon MPs) are so reliable, quiet and beautiful. I do some video rendering and a fair amount of CS3, but most of my time is spent writing and doing the usual webstuff, iTunes, email.

She got if for me primarily to drive my ACD 30" and I must say that they make a handsome pair.

Does anybody want to talk me into returning it for a Jan. 14 purchase? Does anybody want to talk me into keeping this? It is GORGEOUS!

This makes me want to get married, so my wife can buy me something like this :)

But seriously, i dont think penryns going to be THAT much faster, only a little.

im hanging for the new mac pros - but its not really because of penryn... it's because of the price we're paying for out of date video hardware. I'd happily buy the current mac pro if there was an option for a current video card at current prices.

apple dont do that though, so i HAVE to wait for the next revision. Hopefully a full case redesign too - to sweeten the deal.

I would have to say keep it. It was a gift.

He returned it already. Move along folks.

Do you even know what you are talking about? Dual core Xeons to Quad Core 45nm 12MB cache Xeons at the same price points? Not much faster huh?

You certainly live up to your nick. You have no idea what you are talking about, do you....

I know exactly what im talking about, I know people with 45nm engineering samples and at stock speeds they arent that much better than C2Ds :)

Which models does this person you know have? I am sure you can give use model numbers since you know how fast they are. Thanks.

Also, these forums may be more up your alley:

https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/91/

Sure can and they would be the QX9650 and QX9770 (Which wont actually be released but makes intel look good)

Clock for Clock the 45nm chips really arent that much better. The extra cache may help in some programs and im sure it will be a nice upgrade for some but IMO not enough of a reason to sell a gift of an already awesome laptop

I know what im talking about when it comes to computer hardware and yes your partially correct in saying that I would be better in those forums but you dont have to be rude about it.

Now please stop hijacking this thread.
