lens flare?
We were discussing about this with virginblue4 a few posts up.

If this flare is too much, imho it is, and many users are affected it may be a design flaw.

Yes I think it is too much too. I’ve seen other images on this thread that are at night with no flare though.

Is it a common issue or is it only affecting certain phones?

(newbie here, sorry if too many pics in a single post)
Obligatory kitty portrait shot and Paris pics. All unedited.

I think that I have noticed this one in the past, maybe it was a X? I can't remember right now.
It seems that we need photos with one half containing bright subjects and the other one showing total darkness, to check if it is widespread.

I’m having issues with my camera at night as can be seen in this image.

The light from the cross and wall lights seems to replicate in a mirror image and sits on top on the photo.

I’m no expert but this doesn’t seem right and has really limited the shots I can take.

Can anyone explain what is happening here?

It is called ghosting which is internal reflections. The optics in the iPhone have never had any anti-glare coating on them, therefore you get ghost images. It’s it’s really not a big deal because there are apps out there like touch retouch that will allow you to clone the images out From lights. So, don’t worry, just shoot away and get the touch-retouch app and erase those reflections. The app works extremely well and you can actually remove unwanted people from a photo.. or anything else for that matter.

These look OK for a phone camera. The fake bokeh falls apart on anything with soft edges ... exactly the kind of subjects one is most likely to use it on. Fine for snapshots I suppose.

The photos are phenomenal.

Please let us know where you've taken the pictures. Sometimes "downtown" doesn't help. Downtown where? I always try to guess. It's getting easier to spot Chicago since there seem to be a lot of people in this thread from there.

Is ghosting the same for everyone though?

I’ve never noticed it before on any iPhones I’ve owned. Should I not take it back to Apple to exchange for a new one?

Great thread! My Xs Max is my very first iPhone. I switched from Android for better photos so I'm obviously loving taking photos with this phone. Here are a few newb attempts from me. No post processing.

Portrait Mode attempt

What's impressive about this photo is the lack of motion blurring from the motorcycle racing down the track. And this is on 2X optical zoom.

You don’t have to return it, the camera is not defective, it does it to mine as well. I was taking photos in the night last night even in the house, I get the same ghosting or reflection in the optics on my phone as well. And I’ve seen it on all my other phones also. It’s always been there. Look behind the bench in this photo and you will see three of the greenish colored lens flare from inside the building... I think these new camera since they have larger optics because the F ratio is faster, they do tend to have internal reflections like that. As I mentioned also there’s no special coating on the optics to eliminate that. It’s pretty normal and I have seen it on my last three or four iPhones

That first shot and last shot are my favorites. On the first image, it is really amazing how well the smart HDR captures all of the detail without overexposing highlights.
