and that 4 secs times how many times you come here adds up.

ex macrumors 100 times a month.=400 secs

big web site you go to 20 times (and the bigger the bigger the difference) so like 20 sec difference for a big site right? another 400 secs. Plus waiting another 20 secs every time is annoying. Why have a smartphone/3g if it is slow? I bet good att edge is that fast.

So you mean to tell me I could save myself 800 seconds per month? Wow, what am I going to with all that time. Any suggestions on what to do with my 26.6 seconds extra per day?

This comparison between AT&T and Verizon data speeds is just old. Sure the max speed on GSM is much faster than CDMA but there is more to it than that. What effects your speed the most is how much traffic is being filtered through whatever cell tower you are on at any given time. GSM towers, while faster, can't handle the amount of users at any one time that a CDMA tower can. What this means is that real world data speeds are very similar and hardly noticeable.

That's all it is. I'm just as guilty of that. The other day I moved my cable modem from my office to another location (my whole house is now Wireless N so I moved it to a location where it's non-visible) and my speedtest went from 28mbps in the original location to 25mbps and change and I was all pissy for a bit til I realized that it was stupid.

Haha. This made me laugh a little.

Now I think I understand why Verizon offers unlimited data.

Lol :D
In all seriousness though, Verizon does have decent 3G speeds in some places and bad at others just like any carrier out there.
What I would suggest you guys do is try it out for 2-3 weeks and see how it plays out. You can always return it before the 30 day trial period is up and get out of the agreement you signed if you do chose to.

You posted about a month ago that At&t offered you an Iphone 4 even though your contract was up so you placed an order. So you paid for a brand new Iphone 4 on at&t and then a month later month later you pay to break your at&t contact to start a new one with verizon? Sounds like a waste of money for the same exact phone.

Since your unhappy with verizon looks like you have to pay to break your contract with them to go back to at&t :p

I was in the same boat too^^^. But I broke even with the sale of my ATT 32GB iphone on ebay ($650 with a ton of accessories).

Ive been on Verizon before and I already know what to expect with their data plan. The most important factor for going back to Big Red is voice since I work in Law Enforcement.

and thats slow? You can scratch ur a$$ and take a sip of water then go back to your youtube vid in 3 seconds. Whats the big deal?

I guess technology got us spoiled.

That is exactly my point. The "slow" CDMA data made me wait a whole 3 seconds. Its laughable to think that people are seriously complaining at how much faster AT&T is. We have been spoiled....remember in the 90's when it could take minutes to load a page on a computer? What is a few extra seconds at this point?

4 Seconds wait? so much for a powerful phone and network but has to wait 4 seconds for every pages. multiply that to how many times a day and a year. then multiply that to X times for video streaming, like youtube and netflix. Time is money. you can buy phone but not time. nothing to do with being patient

Yeah you must be right...Ill switch over to AT&T and do it in 2 seconds. If i can waste 2 seconds....I can surely waste 4. If time is money then way does anyone comb their hair or put make up on (things that take way more time that loading a page on an iphone from verizon).

Another Arizona native. You probably didn't go ATT for the same reason I did. Too many dead spots for ATT voice dropping calls. Loved the iPhone for years, but I use my phone far more with voice when I'm out and about than data (voice/text are my main uses when I'm not in an area where I can veg out). I couldn't justify the dropped calls since I have a family, etc, and need to be available any time w/o any issues.

Yup. I get so tired of so many posters on MR berating either CDMA or Verizon in general. If you venture out of the metro areas of AZ, there are gigantic GSM VOICE coverage voids here.

Sorry, but when your out in BFE AZ and your a$$ depends on communication, I'll deal with data speed. I can watch Netflix at my home office desk where without my AT&T MicroCell that I had to pay $150 for + $20/mo., my 3g had NO SERVICE. 9 miles to 3G (NE Scottsdale/Rio Verde Foothills)

Want more metro? Try the IceDen in Scottsdale. I would have also said my desk at work in the past. That was before AT&T lit one up that I can see out the window across the street about two months ago. Just my luck!:p Even so, you walk to the other side of the building, forget making a call. Nor in the grocery store next door.

I actually made a complete 30 min commute from work to home talking to a buddy in WA without needing to stop and say, "hey I'm almost to the top of the hill, I'm going to loose you. I call you back in 15 min." (an excuse that actually was sometimes beneficial!)

It just worked. Which is supposed to be the :apple: way.

Listen dont bother getting into I can wait so many extra seconds longer per webpage, comb my hair and other nonsense like that.
If you like or can wait longer and dont mind putting up with slow data speeds that's good for you. Not everyone is like that or can put up with it.
Im sure for some people it will be fine and a minor annoyance and for others a deal breaker. We all got different needs, wants and we also have choices now so that's definately a good thing;)

Verizon, Americas best (and slowest) network

Haha. In all fairness they have the largest LTE footprint so far, and the they have the biggest rollout of the carriers for 4G (well, what they call 4G) planned. Should have over 2/3 of their network in full LTE by 2013 so not bad overall. They're planning for the future.

I'm wondering if Apple will support VoLTE in the future when Verizon starts it up since that's their long term plan for high speed data and HD Voice. Plus simultaneous voice + data.

They're taking queues, and going in the right direction for sure.

Yeah, but what is the rural rollout going to be like? At least CDMA backup in my area is much more appealing. Not sure I'm going to want to pay the $ for LTE either.

Your right, but the point I am trying to make is that when we are comparing a matter of seconds....it means that both networks are fast. We all need to go back a 5 to 10 years and remember how data speeds were. Choice is a good thing....especially for people who are living in areas were AT&T does reach with reliable coverage.

Here is one thing I've read not only here but on reputable sites like cnet for the past few days: "Verizon had better voice quality"

SINCE WHEN?!!!

Look, better voice network reliability? Absolutely. I was a Verizon customer for over 8 years. Last year we did a test with several handsets (including multiple android phones) using Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon, and even some smaller carriers such as US Cellular (CDMA). We unanimously agreed that the CDMA carries such as Sprint and Verizon absolutely SUCKED in comparison to the GSM ones regarding voice quality. There is no way in hell that this magically changed in the last 11 months.

Voice quality was much clearer on all the GSM 3G handsets by FAR. We were not comparing data speeds at this time, only call reliability. One thing we found out which is virtually meaningless, on the CDMA carriers if you call the person standing right next to you there is a 1-2 second delay before the can hear you. This is why when an AT&T customer calls their Verizon friends you may have issues communicating based on latency. It even occurs RIGHT NEXT TO EACH OTHER. This was completely absent on T-Mobile and AT&T. Also, again, the voices were fuzzier on CDMA carriers and it didn't matter if they were CDMA to CDMA or CDMA to GSM.

Having said that, yes I have experienced problems regarding network reliability that Verizon did not have in my 2+ years of having AT&T. I can honestly say that AT&T has gotten better in the last 6 months. In the end, they are two sides of the exact same evil and it's pretty meaningless. Whatever carrier is better in your area and you have the most contacts on is the way to go. Period. Do not be a carrier fanboy, it makes no sense. Anybody that says Verizon has better voice quality is a carrier fanboy, our data says otherwise. Reliability yes but not voice quality

Yeah, but what is the rural rollout going to be like?

Well eventually they're going to convert their entire network to LTE, especially as they start to go VoLTE for voice service, so it wont matter at one point.

With that 66% by 2013 who knows. Most likely I'd expect all the obvious Metro area's covered first, and then I'd "guess" they would build out in two ways from that.

#1. Start building outwards from the Metro focus area's and keep pushing out making the "circle" bigger.
#2. In rural area's not near Metro, but higher capacity they will build out there, and then the same as #1 and start expanding the circle.

We'll know as they get to those stages.

Your data came from a single geographic location. It's not definitive. It's perfectly feasible that in some areas, the Verizon iPhone 4 might outperform the GSM model.

I agree but I dont think anyone wants to go back to 5-10 years ago in the age of 56K dialup etc:D
That's why we like technology and its progression.
Depending what you do it can become a drag especially if you're spoiled with broadband connection at home, at work or with 5-6Mmps 3G conection and you go down to 0.3 or .5mbps then you can start to notice the difference.

the only ppl who should be fanboys are the ones who actually own STOCK within the company they defend.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

My experience has been sort of weird so far with data speeds all over the place. I've owned all the iPhones back to good old edge one and I love using the new devices regardless of the carrier. I had a mifi on verizon that I upgraded in the hopes it would be better in my area. The first 24 hours data speeds were generally very slow as in less than .5 except one spot. I'm in nw Denver and drove from up wadsworth from alameda to 26th and my speed tests were abysmal and were often under .2 and only reached .9 at a major intersection. Even in the verizon store where I got my wife a case top speeds were .8 or so...same as one of their android phones I tested. I get home and test again and all of a sudden speeds hit 1mbps and above after not going above .5 previously. Seems pretty odd and honestly it has felt slow at times in use compared to my iPhone 4 on Att. I will continue to test over the next week or so, but at times I felt like I was using that edge version again.

This makes me love AT&T in Dallas even more. All day, baby!
