Sales numbers like this, prove that American's are impulse buyers when the price is so low.
It proves the Genius of Apples marketing expertise.
At a measly $30 per copy, and just one easy click away, Lion will sell on those two points alone.
Hardly anything else matters, certainly not to Apple.
1) They get the Money
2) They get the Bragging Rights
They get those two things which they value more than anything in this world.
It's win/win, and Apple gets both of those wins![]()
Not sure this is Apple's fault. The Developer Preview was out long enough for Adobe to provide an update for any necessary changes.
It's also the fastest that I've been able to upgrade every computer for myself, my parents, and my girlfriend.
We are all really enjoying Lion so far. My parents are really excited by inertial scrolling and two-finger swipe forward and back in Safari. And that's saying something.![]()
The impulse counts for a lot. It becomes very apparent during a Steam sale. And the fact that Lion is a great OS has nothing to do with its sales success. Funny how you conviently over look that fact. Every single review has been beyond positive. Even the guru of hackers has praised Lion as the most secure OS to date. And this from a .0 release of an overhauled OS. Apple is the freight train that no competitor can keep up with at this point. Personally, I can't wait to download and update my Mac computers to Lion.
Just how is it Adobe's fault that Apple broke things in 10.7?
The purpose of the Developer Preview is so thatThe purpose of the preview is not so that Apple can break things, and the developers can waste time, effort and money to work around what Apple broke.
- Developers of user appls can get a head start on supporting new features like Resume, and be ready to go on shipment day
- Developers writing drivers (kernel extensions) can be ready with updates on day 1
- Apple can get feedback on things that Apple has broken, and fix them before shipment day
The impulse counts for a lot. It becomes very apparent during a Steam sale.
In my experience, the more time you spend researching a purchase. The less likely you are to make that purchase. It is only compounded by the number of choices available as well. Apple makes it a one stop shop to control every inch of their empire. Hardware, software, and developers.
That realization can go either way. The control over the perceptions of value hits everyone outside of Apple when you can not skim revenue from a transaction or on your own hardware.
So, maybe it is time to be a shareholder and watch everyone else burn. Is that the proper mentality?
And the fact that Lion is a great OS has nothing to do with its sales success. Funny how you conviently over look that fact. Every single review has been beyond positive. I remember when Apple showed the world the first iPhone. The doubters laughed at it for not having a physical keyboard and said it was not going to sell. We know how that turned out. When Apple showed the iPad the doubters made fun of its name and said that it would be a sales flop. We know how that turned out. Now everyone wants to ride the Apple train by producing tablets and smart phones that happen to look like the real Apple product. If you can't beat or compete with Apple you might as well produce a product that looks like an Apple product hoping people will buy their product. That's what I call marketing, not good marketing mind you.
You want to know why Apple is a success. It's the fact that anyone can walk into an Apple store and try out the product. Or take the product hone for 2 weeks and decide if the Apple product is to the customers liking. If they don't like they can return it for a refund. There is no snake oil sales going on here as you would like people to believe. It's about producing a product of substance and quality that no other manufacture can even come close to. Sure marketing is important, if you don't tell people about your product how will they know about it. If a product does not live up to its marketing then that is pure hype. Samsung, Motorola and others have all proven that to be true. Everytime I walk into bestbuy and try out the competition products I go away shaking my head wondering how these companies can seriously think there products are worth the price they are charging.
The thing most I would be worried about buying these so called Apple killer products, is where will be the software support or support in general in 1 or 2 years. With Apple you know exactly when an OS update is coming or that there is an endless abundance of quality software that runs on the Apple hardware. User experience is what separates Apple from the competition. This is something that you fail to understand about why people are so loyal to buying Apple products. There is a good reason why Apple stores are so packed all the time.
What is the most amazing part, people are buying Apple products even in this fragile economy where people are more closely watching what they spend. This says a great deal about what people think about Apple.
While hardware is becoming a much more ancillary, the perception of value can not be damaged. Though this does not appear to be the case for the iPad. The "Lion is just $29, shutup an buy it!" mentality is so much easier to push. Getting a refund might take a little more effort but it does appear possible on the App Store. When did hardware come into play?I know many die hard non-Apple users become happy Apple buyers from the simple fact that they used the Apple product at the Apple store and then decided that they wanted to try out the item longer. Your theory about impulse buying does not bear out with the fact that Apple has a 14 day return policy. I doubt many people would not return an expensive product they disliked given the chance to return the item. The competition that is crashing and buring are doing it to themselves. Nothing is stopping any company from producing a really great product that everyone wants to buy. This notion that people that buy Apple products are guilable or so taken by the marketing that they have this sudden urge to go out and spend a lot of money on Apple products is quite silly. I will say it again, the Apple store and the 14 day return policy. I have returned many a product because I disked it.
I suspected as much.By the way, I am a extremely happy and profitable Apple share holder. Someone that owns Apple stock can have the opportunity to make enough money on the Apple stock to buy Apple products if they so choose to. A pretty good deal if you ask me.
I guess that's the difference between Microsoft's approach and Apple's approach. Apple isn't afraid to make changes that break existing software, Microsoft is much more interested in backwards compatibility.
Both approaches have merit, I think. With Microsoft you don't have to worry (for the most part) that your old software is going to be unusable with the upgrade, but with Apple you get the benefit of much faster and larger changes.
I suspected as much.
I call shenanigans on the Vista comparison. Apple supposedly already had their Vista - I believe that was the accusation leveled at Leopard.
You only get one Vista. You're not allowed two.
Can't wait for my 13" MBA to get here... Had to cancel my order twice for dumb reasons, and it looks like it'll get here on Monday even with overnight shipping.
Disliking all of you that got yours already![]()
Apple announced today that more than 1 million copies of OS X Lion have been downloaded from the Mac App Store worldwide in the day it has been available. Apple notes users are buying Lion faster than any other OS release in Apple's history.
In 2005, it took more than a month for Apple to sell two million copies of Mac OS X Tiger. Two years later, Apple sold more than two million copies of Mac OS X Leopard in its first weekend.
In 2009, it was estimated that sales of Snow Leopard -- which, like Lion, was priced considerably cheaper than either Tiger or Leopard -- were double that of Leopard, although Apple didn't tout sales numbers in a press release like they have with Lion.
Poor choice of words there, it can never be legitimate when you download Lion as a torrent.
But, it'll patch, Apple isn't as big activation freaks as MS are.
never update your os on day-one for a machine that is critical to your business workflow. This rule stands for every os!
Adobe Suite dosen't work on this new GREAT OS. I work with my mac I don't play like with iPad so I don't install it. That's all from me.
But I thought the Mac App Store model wasn't supposed to work?
An absolutely ASTOUNDING success both in terms of business, release quality and server performance...CONGRATULATIONS, Apple!

Upgraded to Lion and lost my sound on my iMac. Check out the web, all output devices are gone, reset smc and pram, nothing. SLoooow, this upgrade is a major downgrade. Apple has gone the way of Microsoft. Release an unfinished product and make people pay to be beta testers. It over 24 hours since the release and no fix for no sound. THAT MEANS NO ITUNES.. Check this out when Lion boots, you hear sound, once the os starts, sound is gone. Log in screen is like a big linux distro. You can't even tell, you upgraded. I would wait for some updates. NO SOUND?????? APPLE FIX THIS !!!!!!!! OH, MICROSOFT OFFICE DOES NOT WORK IN LION ALSO, WORSE APPLE RELEASE EVER!!!!!!!!!
