As of today, there's just a month to go until the keynote event for Apple's 2023 WWDC event, which is set to take place on Monday, June 5. WWDC 2023 is going to be exciting, because in addition to iOS 17 and the usual software updates, we're also expecting to see Apple's AR/VR headset.

We thought we'd do a quick rundown of everything that's rumored now that we're at the 31-day countdown mark.

iOS 17

iOS 17 won't be an update where we get a major feature overhaul like iOS 16's Lock Screen, but according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, it will have some of the "most requested features" that iPhone users have been hoping for.

iOS-17-Icon-Mock-Feature-Feature.jpg

  • Dedicated journaling app for tracking and recording daily activities and thoughts.
  • Updated Control Center interface.
  • More functionality for the Dynamic Island.
  • More interactive widgets.
  • Search improvements.
  • Health app to expand to the iPad.
  • Health app will include new mood tracking functionality, asking users about their day and tallying up the results over time.
  • Health features for tracking vision changes.
  • Minor Lock Screen updates, such as font size tweaks and option to share Lock Screen designs.
  • Apple Music Lock Screen interface to possibly gain support for lyrics.
  • Manual adjustment options for App Library folders.
  • More streamlined and intuitive Wallet app.
  • Find My improvements.
  • Support for sideloading apps in Europe.
Note that some of these features, like the journaling app and mood tracking, come from reliable source Mark Gurman. Others, like the widget rumor and the changes to Dynamic Island, are from a source with a less established track record.

watchOS 10

We aren't getting notable updates to the Apple Watch hardware this year, but changes are coming in watchOS 10. This could be one of the bigger watchOS updates that we've had in recent years, with Gurman describing it as "fairly extensive."

Apple-watchOS-10-Feature.jpg

  • A new widget system will make it easier to get to key information on the Apple Watch without the need to open an app. Widgets will be scrollable, and will allow glances at activity tracking, weather, calendar appointments, and more.
  • Buttons like the Digital Crown could be more customizable, with users able to choose to have a press open up the widgets interface rather than the Home Screen.
  • Apple could overhaul the Apple Watch Home Screen in some way, offering a more intuitive layout than the app grid.
Mixed Reality Headset

Apple's mixed reality headset, which could be called the "Reality One" or "Reality Pro," will be the company's first new product category since the 2015 launch of the Apple Watch. It will be Apple's second wearable device, and rumors suggest it is going to be packed with cutting edge features.

apple-mixed-reality-headset-mockup-feature.jpg

[*]The headset will use dual 4K micro-OLED displays from Sony for 8K total resolution and a display quality that exceeds the display quality available from competing products.
[*]Dozens of cameras will be included for everything from mapping the environment around the wearer to monitoring facial expressions, hand gestures, and leg movement.
[*]Iris scanning will be used for authentication.
[*]Facial expression tracking will be available to relay the wearer's facial expression to a virtual avatar in chats and calls.
[*]Augmented reality and virtual reality capabilities will both be available, with users able to swap between them using a Digital Crown-like knob. AR will use the cameras to map the world around you, overlaying virtual objects on the real world, while VR is entirely virtual and shuts out the world.
[*]The headset will be controlled by hand gestures detected by the cameras.
[*]Mac-level M2 chips will be included in the headset to handle all of the processing needs. Rumors suggest Apple will use one high-end main processor that's supplemented with another lower-end processor that manages the sensors in the device.
[*]There will be no built-in battery, with the battery instead attached to the headset via a cord and worn in a pouch at the waist. Battery life will be around two hours.
[*]Rumors suggest we can expect a thin and light design for the headset, and it will be lighter than competing headsets because it doesn't have an included battery.
Air typing support will be available so that users can handle text input without a physical keyboard, but it will also support text input... Click here to read rest of article

I really dislike, no, I HATE pressing & holding the crown to unlock the screen on Watch! Prior, using the crown to scroll was much more intuitive and faster!!

I just wish iOS would:
Fully remove modal pop ups! For 2FA ok that’s fine but for ads from UberEats and such, alarms should be 1 second only for a glance and just Be Gone, back to notification center. Not stay on the screen for 3 seconds plus cause your wrist is up.

We live in a fast paced world! Runners, cyclists and anyone else don’t want to nor need to stare at the screen that long. Allow 1 second notification, and just be gone unless the notification is tapped on to stay for longer reading.

It’s becoming a safety issue looking like a dork reading a notification alert while bike riding or running in the city!!

Anyone else notice from navigations to alerts & navigations etc that iOS and WatchOS has been getting slower and slower with every new release over th years?!!!

My prediction in '24:
Apple will have a new CEO.
And it couldn't come a moment too soon.
The challenge is:
Will the new CEO be a visionary, or will it be another corporate money drone...?
If one had checked online they would have easily found out that 2024 is too soon. :p
The stock grant suggests that Cook’s performance over the past decade is viewed highly by Apple’s board, which wants to make sure that he will be paid competitively through 2025 if he continues to be the CEO of Apple

The rumors are pointing to iOS 17 being mostly a maintenance and stability update with some exceptions like the Wallet app getting the big organizational upgrade it should’ve gotten long ago.

When the whole world, including Apple, started switching to Type-C, I decided that I would not buy any obviously obsolete product with Lightning. It's a matter of principle.
I want to buy new full-size headphones, but if the Airpods Max doesn't get USC-C at WWDC 2023, I'll go buy a Bose.
Still using an iPhone 12 PM and if the iPhone 15 doesn't get the USC-C, I'm mentally preparing to buy an Android.

Releasing Airpods Pro 2 with Lightning is a spit in the face to their customers. Apple has overplayed its hand and delayed too long with the transition to the new connector standard. Personally, I'm giving them one last chance or leave the ecosystem.

I charge 100% wireless anyway… haven’t plugged a lightning connector into my iPhone in forever. Its full of pocket lint. I kind of like the lightning connector because it seems more sturdy than a usb c, which has another hole to get jammed up with lint and dirt.

This pretty much wraps up WWDC 2023.

There’s plenty to talk about. The OS’s will probably get just minor tweaks, but xrOS could take a decent chunk of time, as could the headset’s hardware specs. The main thing is, can they sell the headset’s usecase as a want-to-have device, while people have been so lukewarm on the PlayStation VR 2? The 15” MacBook Air will be pretty popular, I reckon.

I do wonder if they will be saying anything about AI assist in Pages, Keynote, XCode, Mail and so on. Microsoft’s Copilot for Office and Visual Studio looks very tasty, and I have been hearing from friends that for developers especially it is pretty revolutionary.

Unfortunately, wireless charging is still less fast than wired charging. The battery degrades faster. Carplay over cable works better. And the biggest disadvantage specifically for the iphone is the data transfer speed.
Apple adds 4k ProRaw, which you can't send normally to a Mac - it's a mockery :)

You know, everyone has their own usage scenarios, I just don't want to buy a knowingly outdated and uncomfortable device in 2023.

I really want the ability to migrate data from one Apple ID to another so I only have one.

If I watch, it will run in the background, only.
These events are so long and tiresome these days. Max 1 hour events I want. Max 5 different people to make presentations. Focus Apple, more focus, a lot more focus Apple.
If I don’t watch, the news will be all over the (internet) place anyway before, during and after the event.
I won’t miss a thing.

Nothing I need to buy from Apple this year. But I keep an interesting eye on what’s happening. Especially on the portable Mac’s as that will be of interest next year to me I suppose.
Looking forward to trade in the Intel MBA, but as it still serves me well, not this year.

I haven’t read all the post here, but I have one wish for iOS 17.
To change widgets/layouts on homescreen.
As for now the flashlight and the camera app is there, and there is no way to remove it or add something different.

I have the last couple of weeks accidentally turned on camera twice, and then put the phone in my pocket. 30 minutes later I take up my phone and it’s hot. Very hot and dropped 25-30% in battery.

One can say that you have to be careful when you put your phone in your pocket, but the classic sentence from Apple comes to mind: You’re holding it wrong😁
I don’t want to baby my iPhone.

There is imo zero reasons for the camera and flashlight to be there in the first place, because you can just swipe down from the top right corner on your iPhone and then you have both camera and flashlight. It takes 0,5 seconds longer to do this.

I really wish Apple could implant this feature.

As for my wishlist...
macOS:
- Interactive widgets like pre Big Sur era. I used to use the calculator widget quite frequently!
- Better window management especially in fullscreen on big screens (and stage manager is just a gimmick)
- A launchpad redesign
- No more abstract wallpapers for the love of God!
- Better shortcuts implementation other than cramping them up in the menubar. A shortcuts widgets would be nice
- Plugins support for spotlight
- Synced notifications and messages (yes I've enabled sync messages and it never seems to work)
- Ability to delete first party apps like iOS

iOS:
- Better Siri
- Smarter shortcuts
- Journaling and mood tracking would be nice
- Health app redesign
- Camera API improvements (I have an iPhone 13 Pro and Telegram's camera still uses the 2x zoom, not the mention the awful auto lens switching)
- Interactive widgets
- The ability to turn off lock screen shortcuts at least

We need Spotlight reform badly. I had no idea how lacking it was until I started using Raycast and it's transformed my workflow. Apple should take a nod from them and add significantly more functionality / open the API up to more interactivity with various apps.

WWDC has been a low expectations event for a while now. But I gotta say, I'm kind of dreading this WWDC. The RDF is dead, please don't try to reanimate it.

Here’s my question… will the “Reality Pro” headset look:

A) even worse than this artist rendering
B) equally obnoxious but different
C) somehow actually less gross looking

😂

Since that render lacks an Apple logo, I’ll assume it will arrive WITH logo and thus be transformed into “shut up and take my money” beautiful… or option C+++++.

If Apple makes the logo glow- like certain vintage MBs- people may not be able to spend all of the money-and credit - they have fast enough. ;)

Would you care to explain why the OS has become boring to you and what you mean by "pure" performance? Thank you.
The Watch OS seems outdated now and it’s been the same OS designs that we have been using for a long time now. So it definitely needs a new overall and revamped UI.

The iOS 16 has not been my favorite. At times I find it draining the battery life, sluggish, and filled with silly bugs. Check out the recent bug I encountered.

So tell me Mr. NeverWrong, are you now suggesting that games get special interface guidelines and enforcement from Apple that other apps do not? 🙄

No matter how badly you want this to be Apple’s fault, it’s a conscious choice by each developer. (Even the game developers.)
Games absolutely get different guidelines from other apps. It's not a conscious choice by each developer. If you go to Apple's developer documentation for playing audio and search for "game," you'll see that it uniformly says that games should "[respond] to the silence switch." Other types of apps get different guidance depending on the context of audio playback within.

Do you mean that the fact that we have had the same OS design for a long time can be in itself a reason or necessity to revamp it? You seem to say that just the age of an OS could necessitate its revamp, even if it functions properly, such as Watch OS. How do you determine that a well-functioning OS is outdated? What does “outdated” even mean? Shouldn’t a new overall revamp of a well-functioning OS such as Watch OS require more than just “old age”? Sorry, I’m just curious.
