-another round of OS updates that prioritize gimmicky half-baked features over performance and stability optimizations

Oh hoping for just a sliver of more pre-Yosimete UI. Less flat, less minimalist, more intuitive, more It Just Works (and It’s just Stable.”)

Games absolutely get different guidelines from other apps. It's not a conscious choice by each developer. If you go to Apple's developer documentation for playing audio and search for "game," you'll see that it uniformly says that games should "[respond] to the silence switch." Other types of apps get different guidance depending on the context of audio playback within.
Did you even read the guidelines?

‘Apps’ and ‘Games’ get to choose from the SAME sound types, which do or do not respond to the switch. Games can have essential sounds, ambient sounds, etc.

The examples then give some examples of NON-ESSENTIAL game sounds such as ambient music that may respond to the switch.

Same guidelines.

Same ‘enforcement’. 🙄

IT IS A CHOICE BY EACH DEVELOPER. 🤦‍♂️

"[macOS] Headset support is a given"

Oh, really? No, because O've never heard any rumors about the headset interacting with Macs.
I reeeeally hope it will, cuz then the potential would be huge.
These rumors never talk about using the headset as a productivity tool, and I'm kinda pissed cuz augment a Mac's desktop and being able to use eyes as a pointer would make it a so much faster combo than what's achievable today.

I’ve been pondering this idea for a long time, I want a new computer, but I’m not sure if I want another desktop. I’ve thought about just getting an iPad since I don’t really need a full desktop with MacOS, but I worry it won’t be enough for what I need. So I’ve considered a laptop due to the portability, but a laptop seems too clunky and heavy to be truly portable.

So I came up with this, Apple could take an iPhone or a iPad mini, remove the screen, battery, cameras, and speakers, so you’re just left with a slim brick that’s pocketable. Now with all the space freed up by the removal of the screen, batteries, etc, they could use the M1 chip, put 8-16gb ram in there, and offer various storage sizes. Put a power port, some USB-C ports, and have it run MacOS, and boom, a fully pocketable and portable mini computer. Take it wherever you go, and then plug in to any monitor and power source and you’re good to go. Could use any Bluetooth keyboard and mouse or trackpad.
What you talk about already exists, and it's called Mac Mini. Perhaps next generation will be smaller, but I wouldn't count on a much smaller one.

So you're willing to ignore that every category that mentions games on that page says that it should obey ringer switch behavior, simply because a heading says 'consider what kind of playback your game does,' even though no categories are cited that would lead to games playing when silent mode is on. True, there may be some kinds of games that have "sounds [that] can mix with other audio" but I don't know any.

I suppose that when this Apple Community Specialist says "the Ring/Silent switch will mute incoming calls, messages, and notification sounds, as well as sounds for games," (emphasis mine) that means nothing to you, even though it's true across the board. Play any Apple Arcade title and tell me this isn't enforced in Apple's HCI guidelines.

The real question is why I let myself get drawn into an argument with yet another internet stranger who is completely incapable of being convinced by both written and experiential evidence. You can read the guidelines, which state things fairly clearly, or you can play the games and see that the ringer switch always silences them. But no, let's go around and around and argue about it some more, because that's more fun than you simply saying "you know, gosh, you're right, that is how it works, but I'm still okay with it because I want the ringer switch to silence my games" or something reasonable like that.

Thank you for your response, I just tried putting my Mac Mini in my ipocket and it just would fit, what we here at the center want is a computer that fits in our pockets.

Thank you and have a wonderful evening my brother.

For macOS my only wish is to be able to cmd-tab between windows of the same application.

For iOS my only wish is to be able to hear game sounds while my ringer switch is off.

Bonus points if they stop using California locations for macOS names. Big cats were way cooler and there are lots of better options.
Yeah the California-centric names are feeling a bit forced at this point. On that note, I wonder if the actual Ventura CA has as many bugs as the OS?

There’s plenty to talk about. The OS’s will probably get just minor tweaks, but xrOS could take a decent chunk of time, as could the headset’s hardware specs. The main thing is, can they sell the headset’s usecase as a want-to-have device, while people have been so lukewarm on the PlayStation VR 2? The 15” MacBook Air will be pretty popular, I reckon.

I do wonder if they will be saying anything about AI assist in Pages, Keynote, XCode, Mail and so on. Microsoft’s Copilot for Office and Visual Studio looks very tasty, and I have been hearing from friends that for developers especially it is pretty revolutionary.

This last paragraph is what I've been saying for years. The headset needs to augment productivity apps. In my opinion - if the UI and input methods are great - that's the only way the device will really sell like crazy.

In the near future, thanks to AR we'll see more and more Macs without screens. And before they'll be - perhaps temporary - replaced entirely by headsets, they'll probably be smaller. So perhaps your wish will become true.

No category mentions games themselves. They mention SUBSETS of games games with sounds you’d likely want to chose to respect the ringer. Like game soundtracks or ambient sounds.

Specifically sound that the DEVELOPER does not consider essential enough to play when the switch is silent.

This is the SAME CHOICE every app makes.

Play any Apple Arcade title and tell me this isn't enforced in Apple's HCI guidelines.

SongPop, a GAME, *in Apple Arcade* plays sound by default when the ringer switch is silent.

All its game sounds play. Even the AppleArcade intro plays it’s little jingle when the switch is silent.

You’re wrong okay. Wrong.

You started this all saying you wish an iOS update would change this behaviour, but it has NOTHING to do with iOS. It is a CHOICE BY EACH DEVELOPER. 🤦‍♂️

You can read the guidelines, which state things fairly clearly,

Wrong.

or you can play the games and see that the ringer switch always silences them.

Wrong. 🤦‍♂️ Not always. Not even always. No matter how hard you want to believe it.

It’s a custom. A choice. It’s the devs man.

JFC you just can’t allow yourself to be wrong can you?

But no, let's go around and around and argue about it some more, because that's more fun than you simply saying "you know, gosh, you're right, that is how it works, but I'm still okay with it because I want the ringer switch to silence my games" or something reasonable like that.

Or… Maybe you can say “you know gosh you’re right that is how it works, it’s each developer that chooses how to classify their sound, because they don’t want it to play when the ringer switch is off, and they probably almost all do that because it’s how their customers want and expect it to behave, but I’m not okay with that because I want the ringer switch to not do it.”

Or something reasonable like that.

Like ffs man.

Fact: Apple isn’t mandating this.

Fact: Apple offers Game devs the CHOICE to classify their sound as ambient (silences) or essential (always plays).

Fact: There’s no AppStore gestapo kneecapping games that make a different choice (You can even still get featured in AppleArcade!)

Fact: There’s nothing in the OS that can change this developer choice.

Fact: Developers follow this custom (most often) because they CHOOSE to.

Guess: Presumably because the majority of their users prefer the rocker switch to do this and they raise holy hell if it blasts noise when the ringer is off (which has happened for a handful of games in the past).

[*]The headset will use dual 4K micro-OLED displays from Sony for 8K total resolution
That's not how that works. Two 4K 16:9 displays gives you stereoscopic 4k which is half the pixels of 8K at the same aspect ratio. 8K resolution at 16:9 is approx 33 million pixels, while 4K is approx 8 million pixels. 2K to 4K is a 4x pixel bump and 4K to 8K is another 4x pixel bump. When maintaining aspect ratio, be it 16:9 or other (Apple's is probably closer to 4:3), a resolution bump increases in both horizontal and vertical directions.

We on the west coast never have any where the size/quantity of bugs that people experience on the east coast you know. ;)
We do have lot of southern California Alligator lizards all over the coast like in Ventura to fairly high elevations that eat tons of bugs instead of those things all over your walls especially when it gets lot more humid. There is also the northern California Alligator lizard species too. see also this article for species/location ranges.

There were only so many big cats they could use, some thought that they might start to select smaller cat breeds when they run out, but with MacOS mavericks it was quite apparent that Apple intended to use the new naming scheme that uses famous places in California which is quite vast as there lots of places people visit, live near, or experience when visiting. So even with the list of potential registered names for MacOS 14, the chances of you guess which one they will use is always been a mystery that is fun to try to guess. ;)

We have already left Apple a lot of feedback on the Homebar, somewhere at Apple HQ there’s a trash can full of our feedback about the revolting thing.

We do wish you would help us by leaving feedback about how ghastly it is yourself, if you have the time. All of us would be very thankful to you, our friend.

Thank you for the info, I’ve always wondered what kind of lizards those were 🦎.
One used to live in my old apartment complex and I thought it was someone’s pet that got out. You are very courageous to pick it up and let it bite you, it’s a good thing it was a young lizard and couldn’t hurt you. We could use some of those around here as there are a lot of bugs even though it’s California (or is it just iOS 16??).

MacOS Alligator lizard

Maybe not

There are still a lot of places they can use for names, it might be 40-50 years until they move onto something else.

I like MacOS Shasta
MacOS Redwood
MacOS Salton Sea
MacOS Death Valley
MacOS Furnace Creek
MacOS Carrizo Plain
MacOS Grapevine
MacOS Tahoe

Looking very much forward to the journal app. Even though I knew there are apps available, I have been keeping my journal in notes, and being upset to have to scroll all the way down to the bottom for the next entry. I’m hoping there will be a page turner like in books.
i’m also going to amuse myself by seeing if Apple even mentions Siri at all. If in fact it takes weeks just to add a new feature, hire more than the 20 people who are currently working on it and let each one of them take their appropriate weeks at work on nothing else. Don’t make us wait till the new iOS version to add new features, add them all the time.
yeah, but I don’t expect anything new. Been waiting for years because Siri is one of my favorite features. At least it has the potential to be.

I hope Apple will give themeing on iOS and iPadOS sooner than later. My wife and I both love how easy it is to make your device YOURS on android. I want to stay with apple mobile however. Please Apple, Give us this easy peasy feature. You have it done already in a backended, dumb implementation.

I charge 100% wireless anyway… haven’t plugged a lightning connector into my iPhone in forever. It’s full of pocket lint. I kind of like the lightning connector because it seems more sturdy than a usb c, which has another hole to get jammed up with lint and dirt.

And with that lug in there it’ll probably be harder to clean.

If one had checked online they would have easily found out that 2024 is too soon. :p

There's no doubt the board values Cook. Shareholders, too. Cook won't be forced out, but I do believe he will step down. I think he's placing his mark on the AR/VR headset as his product -- something he can truly call his own -- before he steps down. I think the fact that this new product release will be a boondoggle will hasten his exit.

As @TheYayAreaLiving 🎗️ and others pointed out, no one excels at money (and share value) more than Cook. Unfortunately in today's corporate world, that matters more than long-term health and innovation. Companies like Apple, however, are in a different category. They depend on radical innovation to survive. Otherwise, they are just another computer company. Image isn't enough. Apple desperately needs a visionary. Yes, they're like Unicorns, but if Apple is to continue to be special, the board will need to find one. Cook ain't it.

I'll be watching this headset rollout closely, but I'm sticking to my '24 prediction. Call me out late next year. I'll eat any crow slung my way...

Yep, Apple’s AR system will be a flawed product released years early. Very limited in capability. And WAY too expensive. Bought only by tech nerds.

A 💯 sure sign to many that it’ll go nowhere. Because the general public has zero use for such a product.

It will cause Apple to be mocked by the tech press, mainstream press, its competitors, and by millions of people who would never, EVER be seen in public with such a ludicrously expensive piece of nerd-jewelry.

Just like the first iPod.

And the first iPhone.

And the first iPad.

And the first AppleWatch.
