Worst thing Apple ever did was name the iPhone 2 the iPhone 3G.

No one knew what the hell 3G was before it came along, and then suddenly there's a marketing blitz about 3G and 4G networks.

Truth is, average consumer knows NOTHING about it...and trying to educate them about it just confuses them further. (and you can put it in the simplest terms possible and it doesn't help, the general public are just idiots)

iPhone 3G should have been iPhone 2. All Apple did was make cell phone salespeoples' lives that much more difficult.

Sorry I didn't read the whole thread, but I'd like to mention something.

I can own an iPhone 4 as well as another 4G phone can't I?

This is possibly the dealers telling customers they are 4G. So many people here in Australia have been told by Telstra sales people that an iPhone 4is a 4G device.

no surprise

Most consumers are idiots. It's not necessarily because people are inherently stupid, it's because most people fail to do the most basic of research and fail to attempt to understand anything about the product they're about to purchase.

Nobody is expecting all people to be all knowledgeable about all things, but people should put forth a modicum of effort to avoid becoming sheeple.

Companies' marketing departments bank on consumer ignorance. Imagine if Apple actually exploited this ignorance? I wonder how many more people would think the iPhone 4 was 4G if it was promoted in a manner similar to how the carriers promote their "4G" networks that aren't?

Hey guys!

Hey guys, all of you with those lousy 3g and 3gs and 4 phones will be made 100% 5G if you buy the new 100% concentrated iPHONE OIL that you dip the phone in to add midichlorians which will make it 137% faster.

And snake oil.

yeah the whole 4g thing is a mess. Whenever im recommending the iphone to someone they also go "ok and this is 4g right" the average person has no idea. The service providers are doing nothing to help. everyone is obsessed with "4g" now but most people dont know that almost none of these providers really have it and if they do its VERY limited in where you can get service. I dont blame apple one bit for not incorporating it yet. the networks arent big enough, the chips suck too much battery its a big waste of time. I can hear apple now "we weren't the first to the 4g party but we think we've done it the best"

I see why (according to Hollywood) we are deadly afraid the world is being overtaken by zombies or virus affected serial killers.

It is clear that the corporations have developed a virus to eat the critical sections of consumers' brains, leaving just sufficient motor skills to auto reach for their wallets when shown something pretty and sparkling.

Two things I observed yesterday.

1. A young Gen Yer filling in the credit application in the local Apple Store to get her latest 'fix". When I told her she could buy the "must have" at the dept store across the road much cheaper and with 1000 days interest free, I saw distressed confusion flit across her face, not knowing whether she could actually wait for the time it took to cross the road to get her gadget.

2. A huge luxury liner leaving our gorgeous harbour at dusk to take maximum advantage of the city lights coming on, surrounded by to die for views to all sides. High over the pool deck was a monster screen showing camera views of what was there for the looking, if they only had. Lets hope the screen was 3D, reality is such a cheap imitation

In both cases I could only think of the fattards in the hover chairs in Wally.

ianything and apple users are the most misinformed, even though apple is very clear on most things. Including its a 3G phone.

just proves how dumb your average consumer is....

technology is evolving way too rapidly for your average Joe to have any clue what's going on.... sad, but true!

Did you have to jailbreak first?

In seriousness, the problem is that carriers don't have an efficient way of communicating their network capabilities. Often times, the most simple way to represent something is an incremental number. Higher is better, right? So, you have carriers releasing technologies faster than standard 3G itching to get more market share by claiming they are faster than plain old 3G, but in many cases their technology still relies on 3G technologies or is a dead-end solution. However, since one carrier cannot suffer another offering 4G while they don't, everyone petitions that bodies in power to get their 3G+ technology dubbed 4G and here we set. Even verizon's LTE doesn't meet the original criteria for 4G.

To complicate all of this, there's absolutely no backhaul requirements for any of these claims, meaning even if the carrier can only support 1 user at the advertised speed per tower (an exaggeration), they can still call it 4G.

No, the problem is that the carriers don't really WANT to be clear. The more consumers are confused, the more likely they are to make extra money.

I know this is true, i just had to explain to my mom tonight why her iPhone 4 says 3G and not 4G in the notification bar..

This is a brain x-ray of the public
