A friend of mine told me a couple months after the iphone 4 came out on Verizon that the sales staff told him the iphone 4 was a 4g phone and not to get it because there is limited 4g support in our area right now. The sales person then push an android phone on him that had a forward facing camera and supported facetime with the iphone (wtf?)

turns out the forward facing camera will only use googles soon to be released google talk service... so he's got a forward facing camera that does nothing.

It took me about 20 minutes to make him understand the iphone 4 wasnt a 4g phone.... "but thats what verizon said", maybe the att version isnt, but the verizon one is"

it was ridiculous and shows the tremendous lack of knowledge sales staff have about the product they're selling.

34% think they have 4G? iPhone users aren't too bright, are they? But who cares, Apple makes it. Apple is cool.

HSPA+ is considered 4G - not the actual LTE-Advanced "4G", but 4G none-the-less

It's nowhere close to 4G, it shouldn't even be called 3.9G. It's 3.1G technically.
4G nonetheless? You wish. T-Mobile and AT&T are stupid dumb**** that think we are stupid as well and call 16Mbps down 4G.

prepare to be flamed

I am. But really, you'd be surprised at how many people on here are former iPhone owners. But I've been flamed on here for criticizing the propriety SATA cable in the new iMacs. It was the most pathetic attempt at insulting me ever. That's why I barely leave ANY comments, because some people around here are just blind fanboys.

"What the **** do you have against Apple????"  :(

:D

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_8 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/8E401)

Part of the problem is the salespeople telling people that their phone is 4g. I had the Tmobile salesman tell me the Galaxcy S would be able to use their 4g network and also had my dads friend tell me the AT&T store told him his iPhone 3GS was a 3G phone with 4g technology. All BS.

this. even with the ITU's amended definition which lets current gen WiMAX (802.16e-2005) and LTE (not WiMAN-Advance/WiMAX 802.16m and LTE Advanced) be considered 4G technologies, HSPA+ cannot be called a 4G technology because of its backwards compatability with 3G. even though its faster than some "4G"... kinda... stupid, yes... still waiting on 100Mbs downloads with high mobility and that 1Gbs download Ericsson just got, however impossible due to the 60 MHz bandwidth they had to use to achieve it on... try finding that much spectrum available :(

This isn't so surprising to be honest. Even people who claim that they're "educated" consumers, would probably be among the pool of people who think the iPhone has 4G. Misinformation is the real problem here. People who don't care that much will pretty much take anything they hear at face value. You'd be lying if you claimed you were different. We just happen to be mostly made up of the crowd of people who care enough about their phones to know what's in it. Couldn't tell you what was in that bagel I just ate...

Verizon will do ANYTHING to keep you from buying an iphone. they dont get nearly as much towards their commission. they will automatically throw an android phone at you just because it benefits them.

"The average consumer is an idiot." - DEJO's Axiom of Consumers :D

True, but they have law degree and MD degree so it makes sense they don't care. As long as it works and they get value out of it I can say from my own friends they don't care. Just like friends who have macs vs pc the mac people have so few problems that they really don't care if its I5 or I7 or PPC they care about getting work done and moving on.

Who in their right mind and with a real degree that is not IT or Fangirl would even care to keep up with all the crazy tech and marketing hype. I sometimes wish that was me but nooooo I just had to be into IT stuff. Serves me right. :D

A time working at the drive thru and an older couple pulls up and asks, "What's this free 'wee-fee' and can we have some?"

Seriously? :D My first thought is it's funny, but really I don't think it's dumb...I mean Wifi is brand new, and even then if you don't pay much attention to tech I bet you could not know about it.

Man, that's messed up. Also that your friend wouldn't believe you. Ugh. I've dealt with that too...a friend (or possibly significant other, can't remember) who was maddeningly listening to the sales guy over me.

what you mean 5G iphones won't have 5th generation service lol
same goes for ipads people think a 64gig ipad is faster then 16, i mean more giggys under the hood

Question... in the vast majority of the time when its not on a 4G network, is it still draining the battery at 4G rate?

Actually it is worse than 4G battery usage. Any time your phone is searching for a network, it cranks up the juice to the antenna trying to send and receive weaker signals.

The HTC Thunderbolt initially did not have a setting to disable the LTE, so when in a weak or no LTE signal area it would KILL the battery. With the latest update pushed to the phone, they still haven't included an ON-OFF setting similar to the EVO or EVO 3D, but they did give the option for 3G only in the Mobile Data menu.

Maybe one third of Apple user in the USA... but I can speak for at least 20 iPhone4 user I know - no 4G. Maybe we are cleverer ;) maybe its because of Statistics  maybe just because of the not...very reliable source.

Most people are stupid in the first place. However, this doesn't change the fact that some of the most arrogant and condescending pricks I have ever encountered were straight-A-students (AFAIK, only one of them is in Mensa, though).

I remember a time when all of this didn't matter, all you had to worry abut was having a pay phone nearby and a quarter in your pocket.

Honestly, most consumers don't give a crap, all they want is a phone so they can call people or text them. All of the apps and whatchamanots are just a trivial bonus and if you worry about everyone having to know about how it all works then you're concerned with the wrong things in life.

Oh, and a 4G is a fourgy (four people orgy). If that comes with my phone, I'll have one, too. Facetime, anyone?
