Just paid the restocking fee on my 2-week-old mini. I'm sure the bump won't be huge, but I hate the thought of missing the update.

Gahh! Stop it with the thinness. The iMac is a desktop. We don't need it thin, I'd rather have a fat computer with a non-laptop spec!
It's only natural to strive towards thinner computers.

An insider posted on 123MacMin.com that he was told to "wait until October" to buy a Mac Mini. I think that confirms the rumors. Something will happen this week, probably tuesday.
No invites = not this tuesday (6th). I'd place my bet on the 13th or 20th.

I have a theory: the Mac Mini will be rebranded as the iMac Air, and that will be the thin one. There will also be a normal "thick" iMac which will focus more on power.

Dammit Scotty! I need more power! (or at least two more cores...)

Still crossing my fingers and hoping for a quad core..

They all need more power and not 4 year old parts.

As someone else said, I also use Logic, lots of plug ins (very FPU intensive), FCP, Motion, etc, etc.

Plus there is a huge market for this, don't let others fool you.

Some say the mini and iMac are for consumers, wrong, the iMac used to be in all studios all over the world, plus, having a mid range powerful solution, gamers which out weigh music/video buyers by 10-1, plus PRO sumers (the reason Avid bout M-Audio) is because the know that the PRO sumer market is much larger than the PRO market. Heck, huge PRO TOOL studios are all but gone as everyone does the basic tracking at home now on laptops.

Time for Apple to get with the times.

Peace

You're in the minority, unfortunately.

The majority isn't even out for desktops. Notebooks and portability is the name of the game. The minority that are out for desktops are looking for smaller/thinner. And the minority of *that* segment, split between Pros and hardcore gamers, are looking for full-size desktops.

Another post said his shipping date for the Mac Minii was Friday, October 9th after a two week delay. They will announce on Tuedsay and ship on Friday. My guess.

heat issue

Please tell me the new "slim" iMac addresses the overheating problem I have. When I play WoW the machine gets so hot I can hardly touch the left corner and my computer room warms several degrees. The Apple store recently replaced the logic board, video card, and cables because of graphics weirdness but it still cooks.

The new thin iMac will have less space to touch, and therefore it'll be less likely that you'll feel the heat! :p

I can't wait to test run the new iMac's at the Mac store since a iMac is currently what I am looking at as my next computer, still got alot of money to set aside for it, but hopefully a little after the first of the year I can put my money down on one of the newer models.

I don't know why I just read this entire thread. It's pretty much people arguing for Apple or against Apple on this.

I have a quad core Dell that is great. Runs Lightroom and Photoshop fantastically. I paid $349 + tax for this computer last September. Right, 2.4 Core 2 Quad, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB HD. It's been terrific and the last 5 months I've been running Windows 7 on it and it's great and now there's free antivirus for Windows that is excellent as well.

I really think there needs to be quad core in the iMac. While most consumers won't care, hey, most consumers don't care there's dual core or whatever. But you have to move technology forward. You can't just rely on old tech and expect things to move forward.

I do not think the iMac is overpriced, but I Think the Mac Pro is. And Apple can get away with it because people will still buy them because they are Apple. IDK. Seems like the world would be better off if you donated the $1000 you overpay for the same thing.

Sorry to say it, mate, but Apple probably makes the same profit margin on their iMac as their MacPro line (percentage-wise).

And the only reason Apple gets away with it is EFI 1.1....

when are we going to see a media event? if stock dates say the 7-9th of October. looks like were not going to see one......

i doubt there will be a media event. there isn't one for every announcement. Probably an update this Tuesday on the web page. I hope so anyway.

For the record, if you order a product from a company and they release an updated version the company can't ship the new version to you. So if you're hoping for the other guy to receive the new mini even if he ordered the old one you're mistaken. Secondly, no invites have been sent out and since Apple's events always occures on Tuesdays there's not enough time to launch an event the 6th. That's why I think it will happen the 13th or 20th. ;)

Edit: One more thing, rumors say mid-October, 6th isn't really mid...

What people need to understand is that the number of cores in a system will not matter much until apps are written to take advantage of the cycles available. The GCD and OpenCL frameworks are very promising. Once you see apps taking advantage of those two software technologies then multiple cores will make a much larger difference. Until then, running existing apps which may or may not be efficiently multi-threaded will not tap the useful number of cycles on the two or four cores. I can see a number of consumer level apps that will be much more pleasant to use under the full power of a quad-core iMac with GCD and OpenCL.....one is Garageband, another is iPhoto or even Photoshop Elements. Any more efficient rendering of video content would also be a huge win, even in consumer space. 3D raytracers and the like could also benefit, especially from OpenCL. But, frankly, web browsing, email, chatting and the like will likely see no benefit, especially in apps where bandwidth of connectivity is the gating factor. Frankly, for most tasks, my venerable G5 iMac works just fine, or at least will once the faulty capacitors are replaced. I do lots of things on the G5 iMac that don't require more horsepower, but it does gag a bit on video and Garageband. To me, a few reasons to upgrade include access to Snow Leopard when it settles down a bit, a larger screen and programming to the GCD and OpenCL frameworks...for fun....I can also do that on my 2006 vintage MacBookPro.

Exactly as I said. Many applications have recently, in the past year or two, have changed their main focus to Dual Core. It won't be for another three years or so until they focus on Quad Core.

So:
- Major iMac redesign
- Major Macbook redesign
- Minor MacMini speedbump and price drop

and no event?
It seems unlikely...

We are just too curious so we're all hoping to see the stuff on the 6th already....but keeping it real, the event will be on the 13th...

Exactly as I said. Many applications have recently, in the past year or two, have changed their main focus to Dual Core. It won't be for another three years or so until they focus on Quad Core.

This demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how Snow Leopard and Grand Central Dispatch works.

The fact is that there's no difference in a GCD/SL world between two cores, four cores or twenty cores.

GCD knows how many cores there are and what state they are in. When a function call to GCD is made asking for multi-thread execution in a process GCD makes the determination about how many threads/cores to utilize for that call and the threads are then created and tracked.

In other words, the application does not need to know how many cores there are or how best to take advantage of them. GCD takes care of these details, freeing programmers up to more quickly implement multi threading in their apps.

This is why it is disappointing that Apple appears to have let another year go by while continuing to cling to legacy architecture. In all likelihood there won't be a single major application that won't be written to take full advantage of this within the next 6-12 months. Apple is starting to look foolish by developing next generation software for Snow Leopard and then running it on four year old processor technology.

If there are going too be core 2 quads in the imacs, what ones are there likely too be?
