Assuming that the Smart Case doesn't appeal to you, I suggest waiting for several months. It usually takes the case makers a while to develop and market interesting cases.
The place I end up looking is Etsy. An original, handcrafted case is ultimately going to say more than any mass-marketed case. As the iPad becomes more popular, we should expect to see more craftspeople create innovative designs.
For my original iPad, I am still using my original black Apple case. I bought an inexpensive red leather case from a largish case manufacturer, but wasn't happy with the quality, so I sent it back. A couple of months ago, I figured I'd get the iPad 2, so I didn't move forward on buying a case from an Etsy vendor.
Most of the Etsy case designers seem to trade convenience for aesthetics. You will have to decide for yourself what your priorities are.
At this point, I think I am willing to give up some convenience for aesthetics. I tend to use my iPad for an extended period, so pulling it out of a sleeve is fine, because I'll be using it for a while. It's not like a iPhone or iPod that you pull out for a few seconds, look something up, then tuck back into a pocket. My use scenario is completely different with the iPad.
Note that I have ordered a Smart Case for my iPad 2. At some point, I will probably replace it with something more distinctive, but clearly, I can't expect artisans to have such offerings this early.
