I think the comment's are really underscoring the moment this is. It could totally fail of course, but if it lands, this is indeed a game changer of huge proportions.

OpenAI didn’t just get Ive in this acquisition. They got a good amount of former Apple designers, software and hardware. They got the person that succeeded Ive and left Apple in 2023, they got the iPhone and Apple Watch Design Lead that left in 2024. Even that timeline alone of people leaving suggests Apple is losing or has lost its vision, which is clear to anyone not blinded by brand loyalty.

It’s going to come down to the culture of OpenAI and its ability to ship this product of course. But if they manage to do so, it could potentially be what the iPhone was, for AI. Easily.

If you pair this with the Bloomberg article on WHY Apple is behind in AI, you can’t understate this announcement, in any form or fashion. I’m not rooting for OpenAI in any shape or form, nor Sam. But you’re crazy if you don’t see the potential of this.

Apple still makes the best hardware, but the software is and has been in the toilet. And their edge of creating devices that integrate with the human experience is built upon the marriage of those two things, and driven by intention. Design is the medium in which intention travels to the user. Apple hasn’t had that for awhile, and personally I believe it went out the door with Ive. and with the Software QA, it’s left the experience of using their products very lacking comparatively. It just hadn’t affected them much until AI launched - because the entire industry has fallen behind in software QA, and Apple still has the best hardware (especially with Macs) by a mile.

This feels like an OpenAI Hail Mary because they know the AI itself is no longer special.

Thing is, I think it's worth a shot for them. Good and new hardware is the next clear differentiator. We'll have to see if they can achieve it - I am skeptical unless it somehow totally replaces the iPhone.
The only type of device I could ever see completely replacing the smartphone is some sort of brain implant or HUD. Not any glorified AI devices running the same software that can be run on smartphones, heavy and bulky VR goggles, etc.

From the video
Altman: “I started thinking what a privilege it is to connect with someone new, and it hasn’t happened to me in a long time.”

EXACTLY. Did you ever stop to think about why that is? Perhaps it’s because you’re hooked up to machines 24/7. This is what technology has brought to us, after all these years.

Watching this interview makes me want to go outside in the sun wearing NOTHING but my shorts and feel the wind blow on my face while I hear the birds singing in the green trees. This is how I find peace and get to focus on absolutely nothing! Hopefully we humans won't loose this one day.

You still haven't provided an answer though.
I did.
I gave you two. One serious and one not so much. I mentioned medical diagnostics as one example in it helping people. With companies like AlphaFold and its ability to solve the protein-folding problem and help in understanding protein structure for drug discovery, understanding disease.understand life, and that's just one AI company.

It's what happens when you get bored at a company shipping the same product every year with an extra button or a slightly different colour.

Can't argue with that... I sure wish Apple would find the courage to introduce some new products we weren't expecting, or return to fun designs like in the iBook and iPad era.

Remember the surprise announcement of the AirPort Express? Nobody saw it coming. Small, but defined a new category.

I will reserve judgement. But depending on the hardware and the software we might be looking at the birth of an Apple. There is always the company no one expects which displaces the giant. Two quotes come to mind.

"Software will eat the world" Marc Andreessen 2011

"AI is going to eat software" Jensen Huang, Nvidia 2025

How, exactly, is AI helping normal people?

LLMs are really good at doing tedious tasks for you

today I had to deal with lists of items formatted as paragraphs that someone typed all in lowercase. an LLM was able to capitalize the first letter of each word in all of the paragraphs in seconds. this would have taken me at least an hour to correct by hand, but probably longer because it would have been tedious so I'd have been easily distracted

LLMs are excellent at that sort of thing

Gen 1: Smart Glasses, watch, ring - the next gen is a device that you wear not hold (and drop).
Gen 2: contact lenses, implants
Gen 3: AI bots take over the world and humans are destroyed.
Gen 4: the bots start making their own devices, starting with a mouse that needs turned upside down to charge.
Gen 5: The world implodes

Oh please. To paraphrase Steve, AI is a feature, not a product. Microsoft, Google, and Apple will devour OpenAI.
It's a featured product at a minimum. Chat GPT is a better product as of now. Unless something bad happens, the current ranking should stay the same for an obvious reason.

1st place: OpenAI
2nd: Google
3rd: Microsft
4th: Apple, Amazon, Meta, etc

Grok is a wild card. It might share second place with Google or even push Google into third place.

Some serious negativism here. No one knows what this thing is. But I for one am excited to see what it is. I’ve is a genius and Apple have suffered since his leaving. Flame on mates!

They may be the smartest and most creative people in the world, and they may be on the edge of a revolutionary product. But you must admit, this video is cringe. The fact that they released it and thought it was good is terrifying.

I think a lot of people are missing that the company OpenAI bought was founded by Jony Ive and Sam Altman. So he basically just gave himself a bunch of money.
