I know many disagree, and that's fine, but every passing month Apple is just giving me big Nokia/Blackberry vibes. No news related to Apple gives me any confidence that a course correction is near.
What course correction is needed? It’s not like Apple is refusing to participate in the AI hysteria. They just misstepped big time with their delayed features. You can’t compare that to BB’s refusal to move to touchscreens and keyboards until it was too late.

Do you think Apple should release a standalone dedicated AI device too?

It's what happens when you get bored at a company shipping the same product every year with an extra button or a slightly different colour.

Apple has always iterated slowly. The iPhone 3GS was identical to the iPhone 3G except for the processor. People forget this stuff. The build quality of Apple products has never been better. My MacBook Pro is a better machine inside and out than anything from the Jonny Ive era.

Apple faces yet another strategic blow. This development could fundamentally disrupt their position in the market, reminiscent of Blackberry’s downfall when they clung to physical keyboards while Apple revolutionized the industry with touchscreen technology. History may be repeating itself, but with Apple now in the vulnerable position.
I don’t understand how it’s a strategic blow? They didn’t announce anything.
Say what you will about Nokia and blackberry but, Apple actually announced a product and then shipped it.
This is just a company saying “oh yeah, we absolutely have the iPhone killer and we have the original iPhone maker to help us do it… and we might possibly maybe but also maybe not announce it sometime next year maybe, but it’s great. I can’t tell you what it is or what it does or why you need it, but it’s so good.”

Disgusting and sad on so many levels.

The "next big thing" is gonna be people reducing how many screens or tech gadgets they use, en masse. Social media and smartdevices are nothing but a destructive force that make you dumber, less safe, and addicted.

desktops and laptops are fine. a basic phone or watch for calls, texts, and directions is fine.

If I had a dollar for everyone that said Apple was going to fail, but they keep going up. It feels like the people holding the signs that say, the world is coming to an end. Sure they’ll right sooner or later just like a broken clock is right two times a day.

Good point plus it was iPhone OS 1 that was the real breakthrough and I think it was Scott Forstall who oversaw that project.

The 3GS shipped a year after the 3G, it was completely redisgned for 4, again for the 5 and then again for the 6 and then Cook took over ..

There is a piece in Tripp Mickle's book where he talks about how Jobs would visit Ive's team pretty much daily and they were both clear that stock prices and sales metrics shouldn't define their work. No surprise Ive walked away from Cook's Apple where those things are the be all, end all.

If Ive is involved it will be the thinnest AI device ever.

Also, I’m highly skeptical we’re moving away from screens towards voice as our primary interaction with our electronic leashes.
I agree with your skepticism. I have a hard time seeing anything replacing the phone anytime soon. You need to be able to see things, and without a screen that is going to be a nonstarter for anyone who is looking to replace a phone. Augument, sure, but not replace.

Maybe see some sort of glasses that interfaces with your phone so you don't have to take it out as much?

I'm sure Sam and Jony have great talent working on this though, and it'd be great if someone could shake up the space with a compelling new device category.

I hear you. I love Gruber's take on this deal;

"This industry needs a heavy dose of new ideas for new devices. This is just a vibes teaser, but the vibe is a shot across the bow. It conveys grand ambition, but without pretension. To say I’m keen to get my hands on what they’re making is an understatement."

Apple under Steve Jobs was always about new ideas and grand ambitions. Now it's just about the milking past ideas to make shareholders happy
