OpenAI's ChatGPT App for Mac Now Available to All Users

The ChatGPT app for Mac is now available to all users, OpenAI announced today. The app first came out in mid-May, but it saw a slow rollout that was limited to ChatGPT Plus subscribers until now.

OpenAI says that the ChatGPT Mac app is meant to make it easier for users to access ChatGPT and to ask questions about email, screenshots, websites, and content on the Mac. With the ChatGPT app installed, you can press Option + Space on the keyboard to bring up a chat interface for asking ChatGPT a question.

There's a built-in Voice Mode for having voice conversations with ChatGPT, a search feature for looking through past conversations, and more. With the wider rollout, no subscription plan is necessary for using ChatGPT on the Mac. OpenAI has made the latest version of ChatGPT, GPT-4o, available for free, but for a limited number of requests.

Pfft. Another Mac app without the ability to remove the Menu bar icon? No thanks. Apple needs to make an option to block all of these annoying menu bar icons so we can ditch these silly menubar apps like Bartender.

I’ve been using ChatGPT on my iPhone and iPad, and it’s fantastic. I get all the information I need in seconds. I haven’t used the desktop version as much since it’s online, but I’m impressed with the mobile experience. There are no ads to interrupt, making it a smooth and efficient tool. However, I wonder how long this will last before monetization comes into play. If advertisers notice reduced traffic due to ChatGPT, we might see some changes. So, I suggest enjoying this ad-free experience while it lasts.

I can't get logged in on the app. I choose to log in via Google, then it open a blank Safari window and never goes beyond that. My regular browser is Arc, and even the normal chatgpt.com website shows blank even with content blockers disabled.

Doesn’t this only work with the API though, not a cGPT Plus sub.

Siri and ChatGPT are very different things. Siri isn't an LLM, though it is slowly being adapted to use language models. It will primarily always be a voice interface for controlling and retrieving information from Apple applications.
