Neither iMac and Mac mini are normal desktop. Each of them is an AIO desktop and mini desktop. Far from what people demand.

Thank you and well said. I've been saying this for years that I'll never ever buy an iMac or Mac Mini. They are not DESKTOPS!
Neither is a product for me. I grew up on Power Mac G3s, G4s,G5s, and then the Mac Pros until Apple priced them out of any prosumer's price range. Now Apple doesn't sell a product I want or can afford. I'm one of those people who's job doesn't require TRUE PROFESSIONAL computer ability, but still like to tinker around and upgrade here and there with new tech. And gamers all know that Apple will throw them under the bus first as far as support and with tricked out machines. Apple is no longer the company of the dreamers like in that TV commercial. I wish they were, but they aren't anymore. :(

Apple should be happy - if someone else creates the products developers and other people want and need, Apple is able to concentrate on consumer products. Like the new iMac will have soldered flash and RAM - typical Apple customers don‘t care and developers can use Hackintoshes. Everybody should be happy.

Why does everyone pretend Apple didn’t already try this, and pretend it didn’t almost put Apple out of business?

Learn from history, dudes.

What’s a “normal” desktop? The world has changed, and mobile devices far outsell “desktops.” And since when was Apple ever dominant in gaming with Macs? If anything, the move to ARM should help, since the iPhone is a better gaming platform than Android.

As for the ability to tinker around and upgrade, remember that Steve Jobs didn’t think that end users should ever open up their computers. He was the first to drop support for legacy ports, and I think would have easily approved the current non-upgradable Macs that dominate the lineup today.

Regarding affordability, the original Mac sold for $2,495 in 1984. That’s over $6,000 in today’s dollars. Steve Jobs won praise for releasing a $999 MacBook Air in 2010. 10 years later, the MacBook Air is still $999.

Exactly. Apple is a vertically integrated hardware company. They write great software, but the purpose of their software is to sell their hardware. They aren’t Microsoft, which is primarily a software company.

And the word in bold (my emphasis, not yours) is the root of the problem here. You don't have the right to demand that any private entity produce products for you.

Clearly, there are more normal desktops than AIO desktops that Apple makes. Why do people demand a normal desktop? Because both iMac and Mac mini aren't enough in terms of performance, maintenance, and more.

The desktop has its own market which laptop can not interfere with. Outselling does not mean better.

Laptops can not upgrade especially with PCIe slots. Upgrading RAM and SSD might be possible but not comparable to desktops.

The cooling performance of the desktop is superior. While laptop users always whining with the temperature and the fan noise, desktops can minimize those issues and yet better. If you start working with bigger projects, then laptops wont be a choice.

Err, call me skeptic, but isn't this an obvious scam?
First, they use bitcoin. Nothing against bitcoin, but that's the same playbook as that escobar phone.
Second, it's obviously against the EULA, meaning it's obviously won't stand in court. When the company closed down tomorrow, then what?

I hope nobody would fall for this scam. Using the old playbook of "Apple is evil" doesn't mean you can scam people.

You have to pay via BTC because they are trying to avoid getting in trouble for breaking Apple's EULA...yeesh. No thanks.
Yeah, more like "we want to cover our tracks so people cannot go to us after we scam them."

Much like the skepticism levelled at Psystar in 2008 when it announced its Mac clone, the legitimacy of OpenCore Computer is unclear. No address for the company is given and there is little further information about it online.

This makes me highly suspicious.

OpenCore Computer seems to be trying to get around the EULA by accepting payments in Bitcoin cryptocurrency only. In an attempt to prove that the company is not a scam, it offers the use of escrow payment through "Bitrated," which intends to bring consumer protection and fraud prevention measures to cryptocurrency transactions.

This makes me not want to trust them at all.

Would you be happy if someone else use your IP to profit on their own?

What is this nonsense? No right to demand? Supply and demand is the core of economics. If a product doesn't exists it is either because there isn't enough demand or there is no one willing or able to provide supply.

It seems that Apple believes that the Mac Mini and iMac provide enough overlap to not justify a mid-range headless desktop.

Now if you were to say that the individual has no right to command any private entity to produce products, I would agree.

Apple might not have to. These people might simply be gone once they got several people paying them some bitcoins. Ie. they won't even need to make nor ship anything.

I don't see BTC payment as a big problem inherently, especially as they seem to use some type of Escrow process

The escrow process does you no good. They send you a serial number, a photo of the machine, and ship *something*. You have to release escrow as soon as they show proof of shipping. But you have no idea what they shipped, you have no idea if your machine is real, if it’s in the box, or if you will ever get it.

But you are talking about a very small segment of the market, one that Apple doesn’t see the need to compete in.

The main point of Thunderbolt 3 was to give direct access to PCIe in a wide range of computers.

That small segment of the market for normal desktops is still larger than what Mac desktops have. Also, it's really difficult to say iMac is a nice desktop because of its poor cooling performance and lack of expandability with PCIe slots. Don't forget that there are still a lot of people demanding a Mac called xMac.

Also, Apple is making none popular desktop from the beginning and they are seriously expensive. This is why Apple isn't selling a lot of Mac desktop compared to PC desktops.

Expanding with TB3 is a joke and that's one of the reasons why Mac Pro 2013 failed. Learned nothing from the past? It's a simple to fix if Apple has a normal desktop with several PCIe slots. If you gonna expand with TB3, then there are several issues. I thought we already admitted it's a failure?

The reason the MP’13 failed is because it’s thermal design couldn’t handle GPUs and CPUs made in 2016 and onward, and there was no way to fix it. Nothing to do with TB.

It has to do with TB because people demanded internal upgradability. And yet Apple told them to upgrade with TB2 externally which is ONE OF THE REASONS why Mac Pro 2013 failed.

Then how come they made Mac Pro 2019 with a lot of PCIe slots if TB expandability wasn't the reason why Mac Pro 2013 failed? Do they even offer a lot of options for TB expandability? Not at all.

The new MP has plenty of TB expand ability.

They made it a big tower because that is a much better thermal solution. Once they did that, it was a no brainer to add slots.

Hell, don’t take my word for it - apple has said the reason they changed the design was because they “designed themselves into a thermal corner.”

It's 2020! What Apps are you running that are not 64-bit? :)

I am still using my Adobe Master Collection CS6 as far as I am aware they are 32bit (at least some of them). Regardless the year we are having this software still makes my work done. Also My Canon photo printer doesn't work on Catalina. Same with AirDrop between Catalina and some older systems/devices.

This is sad but true.

However, this is not a surprise. Apple giving user access was always a reluctant thing, even if when they did allow it it was well thought out. The 2012 Mac Pro was and still is a thing of beauty.

But by the time 2013 rolled around, Apple had completely abandoned the user base you describe. We just refused to believe it.

After seven years of waiting, and then seeing the new Mac Pro (price and overkill-for-me features), I've lost all hope. Plus, as I've gotten older I simply lost the taste for all that tinkering. The best we're going to get is a setup similar to the trash can, but with a Mac mini instead.

Nowadays everything is so fast (TB3, eGPUs), phone cameras are so good, apps are so robust and storage so readily available that I have gotten to the point where I can completely abandon the Mac altogether, and use an iPad for all my needs (what was once known as "iLife").

My gaming needs don't exceed that of consoles (I have several PS2 thru PS4, Nintendo Wii, Wii U, and Switch scattered all over the house).

And my company issues me a decent PC laptop (Lenovo ThinkPad T470S), so I really don't need an iMac or MacBook anymore. Although if they offered me a choice I'd take the MacBook with my eyes closed.
