Downloaded a bunch of Atari 2600 games and while they seem to run I cannot get the keyboard to actually control them, just see the startup screen waiting for the 'go' command. Tried return, arrows, A, everything... what am I missing?

I dunno about OpenEmu, but Stella works great here for Atari 2600 games. With the addition of some USB adapters, I can use my real Atari 2600 joysticks and paddles with it even. :)

It's not the same

For me it'd be better - because I'd not be reminded just how basic the control system was and actually how boring at 30 years of age it is to play. I can pretend its got a depth it really hasn't for 30 seconds on Youtube.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind making the latest release OS X 10.11 and above only ?

Its been explained several times before - go back a couple of pages. It has to do with the usage of Swift and the many developmental dependancies of 10.11 and their inability to work around it with given resources available. They targeted the latest OS since it was easiest to do.

It's been discussed pretty in depth in this thread.

Oops sorry, overlooked it.

OpenEmu uses Stella as it's it's A2600 core, so there shouldn't be different.

Groovy, pull up the configure controls from the OpenEmu toolbar and make sure all the original Atari 2600 controls are set to a key.

Replaying games from my childhood are even more fun than many of the new releases today! Can't tell you how much I miss all the Atari and coleco games.

My brother just got me the same Mattel football game from the 70's we had as kids for Christmas and I haven't put it down yet.

Nintendo 64 is definitely not the 80s and people buy 3ds and play remakes of Zelda, and if you're a gamer who hasn't played Zelda OOT (widely considered to be the greatest game of all time), than you're not a gamer at all.
I have played Zelda OOT. It is not the greatest game of all time but I indeed enjoyed it a little.
Does this mean I can still keep my PS2, PS3, PS4, and Gamecube?

A great app for those people who just happen to have these old games around (*cough torrents cough*).

They are all set to a key but the keys don't actually do anything within the game. For example it shows the arrow keys as the joystick directions, A as the red button and Return as the Reset.

When you open the Edit Game Controls, or Preferences from the OpenEmu drop down menu I assume the Option at the top is set to Atari 2600, Player 1, and Keyboard in the Input option ?

Also are you pressing Return (Reset) to start the game off, because the other keys will not do anything unless you do.

Remind again why we want to play 70s and 80s video games again. Don't you remember the 70s and 80s? You're not missing anything, believe me. I've looked into it. There's a gas shortage and A Flock of Seagulls. That's about it.

I guess you missed all the women running around without bras :)

BRING THIS TO APPLE TV.............. That would be AWESOME

Yes exactly. Return to reset does nothing. I actually tried every key on the keyboard and nothing affects the game.

I have to agree. There's some great memories I have of old games. Unfortunately, as I said in an earlier post, I've ruined some of them by playing on emulators or reissues. I now try and just keep them just as good memories, many were great at the time but just don't stack up.

Sure modern games have their issues but for every crap modern game there is easily a crap retro game too. I remember buying a Spectrum cassette or two at the market or in John Menzies packed with "10 amazing arcade classics". Even then by a kid's standards these games were dire.

Games with worlds, graphics, and story such as those in Fallout, Bioshock, GTA, etc could only be dreamt about in the old days.

Some great games but for me kept as great memories is the best.

I suggest you contact the Devs at the website on this then.

They will probaly need to know which version of OpenEmu are you running, your Mac Specs/OS etc, which keyboard, wired/wireless etc

None of which you have mentioned here which could have maybe helped somebody to assist you, not just keep posting, the keys do not work.

I guess what I hate most is that I had to scroll through a whole page of of replies to your stupid sarcasm.

I came to this thread because of the same issue. Keys don't do anything.

Just downloaded the latest version of website (v2.0.1)

Tried lots of games from my library - they load just like they should, but it's like the keyboard isn't recognized.

Mac Pro 2013 w/ Apple wireless (BT) keyboard. OS X 11.1

Anyone having more luck with this?

totally agree . would be amazing

True - but Apple is not going to allow this at all. They have been openly hostile about game console emulators having rejected anything that smells of something that can run older video games. The big reason seems that they don’t want to touch any sort of copyright spat given that they want to be friendly with the many devs that created games for these consoles. Lets not forget, while the emulators themselves are legal, the ROMS may or may not be (I would wager mostly not since I don’t know of any authorized way to get them from the copyright owner).

Simply put, it just won’t happen. Apple is really hostile to emulation on it’s iOS platform.
