I'm kind of bummed they emulate the Atari 5200 and not the Atari 800 (and Atari 400). The 5200 was the game machine, but no keyboard/floppy drives. But (if I recall correctly) the hardware was pretty much the same except they mapped the graphic/sound/etc. chips in a different section of memory but conversation was pretty simple (although the joysticks might have been analog).

Point being, besides the few super popular cartridge games they likely converted for both, there are a few Atari 800 games I wouldn't mind checking out after a few decades of not playing them...

I liked the 7800 but never played one once they came out, I remembered seeing it at CES one year.
(Atari 5200 + 2600 = 7800)

Gary

I never even heard of the 5200 back then. I had a 7800 and remember that I was able to play 2600 games on it as well.

I really don't understand why this has to be 10.11 only. It's an mass-emulator (front end) for playing retro games! Most people use old rigs for those purposes which are capable of running most of the stuff perfectly well (old Atari/Nintendo/etc). And I just can't believe only El Capitane has the technical foundation to get the front-end running (how are the steam/gog apps possible in mountain lion?). I'm not demanding PPC compatibility, but honestly guys, this is a little over the top :p

RetroPie on a raspberry pi 2 works great.

Compile the experimental version from source and you'll get basic Atari 800 support.

Seems decent, if one could actually get its to recognize some system BIOS files. No luck getting the Odyssey2 to work, and I've tried multiple BIOS files from various sources. It doesn't recognize the files as a BIOS (but they are, I know), so not sure what this program really wants. No help on their main site.

:(

From the previous page (from a developer talking on the github page):

Speaking for the component I'm most familiar with (the UI), development and testing has taken place with the assumption of 10.11 for a while now, so there are 10.11 dependencies scattered throughout, not to mention any El Capitan-specific behaviors the application now implicitly depends on.

As for why this is the case: since backwards compatibility was already breaking, it was decided to start fresh on El Capitan, since it's generally considered a "better Yosemite." I can't speak on future backwards compatibility, but note that first-class API availability checking in Swift makes it much easier (of course, this requires converting to Swift in the first place). The main point here is that 2.0 represents a path of modernization for the project, and step one was requiring a contemporary OS X release.

In other words, in it’s current state, they couldn’t get it working reliably (probably due to the 10.11 dependancies 10.11 - they already decided to use Swift to make dev easier). You have to remember that this is not a company backed program where they have the resources to make a ugly complicated program. It’s a hobby backed open source program.

He's either a millennial who doesn't know anything than entitlement, senior citizen nearing age that missed the tech boon of the 80's (yet manages to post or forums), or santa never put anything good under his tree

If you don't understand what this means: up, up, down, down, left, right, left, b, a, start

I'm either 25 or 65 or poor? You have me pegged! Konami, funny, I live in Tokyo. I'm a software engineer and teacher. I teach kids how to code. BTW I also dislike the term 'millennial'. It is a useless generalized marketing term with no practical value, as far as I am concerned. If someone wants to say 25-year-old, just do it.

One more thing, where do you think the 'millennial's learned about 'entitlement'? What does entiltlement mean anyway? Are they entitled or just think they are?

No need to reply, just food for thought.

I can get Odyssey 2 games to run, but controls do not work on keyboard or PS4 controller.

Yes, you are absolutely right and I was aware of that in the first place. It is absolutely my favorite front end (having used a myriad stuff on win/mac over the years – even built dedicated machines around them a long time ago) and I'm totally thankful for the hard work they do in their spare time. In the end it is their decision how they approach this and I absolutely respect that. Was just struck when I realized that even when rolling back to 1.0.4 experimental – almost nothing works anymore and openemu just crashes for most of my collection, even the simple 2600 stuff.

I'm really reluctant to update to 10.11 as I have to work with my machine and I had really bad experiences in the past. I'm not a huge fan of these kind of frequent "big updates" in operatin systems as I have the feeling that when a new OS is finally getting stable with all apps working properly, you have a month left to the next OS version and the s**t's starting over...

Remind again why we want to play 70s and 80s video games again. Don't you remember the 70s and 80s? You're not missing anything, believe me. I've looked into it. There's a gas shortage and A Flock of Seagulls. That's about it.
So you speak for everyone?

I'm a hardcore gamer. I grew up playing the Nintendo, Sega, TG16 etc. I collect and own almost every console, and love my ps4 (xbone not so much). Anyway, I love going back to retro games. Not only are they fun for me. It brings back a lot of memories. So speak for yourself!

By far the best emulator on this planet.
I've never seen anything such as good back when I was on a PC.

Speak for everyone? What did I say? I thought I just commented that I didn't remember the 70s and 80s to be so special, culturally speaking. I played these kind of games back then. I think I played them enough. I don't actually play a lot these days. I uses my computer to edit short films mostly and some gamesalad programming. Nothing too high level mind you.

It's more 80's and 90's rather than 70's. But for me, there are some titles that are pretty damn good and considering I haven't played them in decades, it not only brings the nostalgia but gameplay feels new. And also trying out the tons of games and console platforms I didn't get to have growing up, is a definite cool factor.

Wait!! Are you saying if I D/L this emulator, I can play the old 2600 games? Do I need to get/buy the games in addition to the emulator? Where on earth can I get an old Atari joystick with the red button? So awesome!!! I also wanna play me some arcade Galaga and Joust!

If only this were available on iOS.
...and an NES sub controller could be made to connect & map to it.
Perfect timekiller on the train.

Oh well, there's always WORK.
Hooray.

Always nice to have another option to run those games. I like both - the retro games have had a huge influence on me, I grew up with Manic Miner, Jet Set Willy, Paradroid, Wizball, Giana Sisters, Morpheus, Uridium, Intensity (one of my favourite underrated Braybrook games!), Armalyte, Zelda - A link to the Past, Chrono Trigger, Starfox.. and so on, great stuff, lots of depth in a bunch of games, some were slightly overrated in hindsight. Graphics always were important to some point, I remember how much we enjoyed the smooth scrolling of Ultimate's Entombed/Staff of Karnath/Blackwyche, the ton of sprites in Armalyte... and these days Fallout, Elder Scrolls series and plenty of other games are completely mind-blowing (at least on a scale of world) compared to the minimal stage that those games were playing on. There cannot be enough new games but I don't think that the current gaming situation is bad in any way. And while I do find the "you have reached level 2"-achievements extremely sad, I do think that there are plenty of games out there with lots of challenges.

Games weren't $60 a pop and phones didn't cost $600.

Adjusting for inflation, I'm sure they did. And you couldn't buy any games or songs for 99 cents unless it was on the clearance rack (on cassette!).

Cell phones pretty much didn't exist.

Today's $600 cell phones exceed computing power from back in the day and it would have cost more for a computer with 16k RAM back then (today's phones have 2GB); they're pretty much computers with way more storage, higher resolution screen and super fast modem that just happens to make phone calls too.

The closest screen to 65k colors at 720p would have cost you a fortune back then (if you could find anything close).

And gas was less than a $1 a gallon!

Downloaded a bunch of Atari 2600 games and while they seem to run I cannot get the keyboard to actually control them, just see the startup screen waiting for the 'go' command. Tried return, arrows, A, everything... what am I missing?

Anyone who is able to actually play these games please to let me know why I see the startup screen but none of the keys does anything to actually start or control the game? For example trying Asteroids for Atari 2600... any games for Atari 2600 in fact so far.

Without seeing or knowing exactly what you have going on there it is going to be hard to assist, I have a BIG library of 2600 games and all work OK, there are some odd key presses required here and there but other than that I have not experienced your problem where NO games work. Other than the game files you have got hold of being bad which can be so, because the world of games files is full of hacked stuff that may not work at all I see no way of assisting with your problem where no games respond to key presses.

OpenEmu is great when it works, but boy is it fussy about ROM and BIOS formats. I have lots of games which other emulators are perfectly happy to play, but OpenEmu won't touch them. It's incredibly specific about how games were dumped, especially CD based games. It can make finding working versions a massive pain.

It's very much a work in progress.

What a staggeringly ignorant, closed minded, and idiotic comment. Lots of people enjoy old games and for reasons far beyond nostalgia. I enjoy playing Thunderforce IV just as much as Fallout 4. They're both perfectly valid forms of gaming, and just because one is decades old makes zero difference.

Do you have similar levels of disdain for old movies, music, and books? I mean look at the special effects in those Hitchcock films, they render them completely unwatchable!

I still believe these old games are better in every way than any iOS game in the App Store. And you can't play them on iOS, what a shame!

You can play them on iOS, if you side load, just as you can on an Apple TV. It shouldn't have to be that way of course, but Apple loves their walled gardens.

There are *some* good iOS games though. Try CAVE's amazing shmups for example, including their very latest which just came out a few weeks ago. They're incredible. https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/nu-shou-ling-feng-yi-mian/id1057408697?mt=8
