I wouldn't be surprised if a Leopard update makes this machine unusable.

That would seem to be the most likely tactic to be applied by Apple. But I do love all the lawyer talk from everyone that watches Judge Judy. Where else can you read such entertainment?

this might make apple reconsider their prices. price drops in the future due to competition from machines like this (no matter how crappy, they are an alternative for those wanting a low priced machine that runs leopard) would be pretty sweet

The use of Leopard on this would be "illegal", but this is not being sold with Leopard - merely as a machine that can run it. I don't see how Apple could prevent the sale of this.

If you purchase Leopard with your OpenMac we will not only include the actual Leopard retail package with genuine installation disc, but we also include a Psystar restore disc for your OpenMac and we will preinstall Leopard for free

Seems like Apple will care about that part.

I thought genuine Macs have a special chip on the motherboard which OS X checks for?

If so, how does OS X start on these boxes?

this is almost insulting.

I don't know. I'm sure just as many people may find paying 150% the price for a mac mini with less performance just as insulting, even if it does come in a fancy little box. However thats usually just a small selling point for people and after purchase the satisfaction little form factor gets replaced by the enjoyment of the os itself for new users IMHO.

If you paid for Leopard, do what you want. It's your machine. I prefer a real Mac myself, but if you have the time and know-how, go ahead an run it on whatever you want to build. if you want to buy this computer and put Leopard on it, big deal. There is no "Apple Police" that will knock on your door. If it's your own machine, do what you want.

Sneaky... so sneaky... I would actually buy one of these babies!

Just wait until Apple adds a "apple verification chip" onto their motherboards... Unless of course they already do.

I wouldn't be surprised if a Leopard update makes this machine unusable.

Not necessarily. Look at the Windows computers running OS X. They don't have those "Apple verification chips" because, (I believe) they don't make there own motherboards. They take motherboards from Intel, or whatever company that designs thaem.

And, Okay, they upgrade Leopard. So? 10.5.2 still works, and there is a truckload of hackers who would be able to put 10.5.3 or 10.6 or whatever.

In the end, I wouldn't mind buying one of these babies either ;) :apple:

This is illegal and will never happen. This is EXACTLY what Apple doesn't want: it's brand diluted with an ugly product full of bargain-bin components to appeal to the wellfare market. No thanks.

Keep in mind that a mac is merely a beautiful product full of bargain-bin components to appeal to the yuppie/hipster market.

By it's own admission, this machine is made out of the very parts you'll find in an iMac and even some parts from a Mac Pro. They just built a machine out of the very same hardware Apple is using and just aren't expecting an 80% profit margin.

Also, it isn't illegal. It violates the EULA, but it doesn't break any laws.

i'm interested to see how this plays out. If they don't get bothered, they or someone else might release a 8800GT mac with a nice quad core intel in it for under 1000. I'd like to see that. nearly Mac pro power for a reasonable price..yay.

I'm very familiar with osx86 and running it on a pc. I have the know-how and I've done it before. That being said, I think this is a terrible exploit on Psystar's part. This really does leave a bad taste in my mouth. If people want to explore these possibilities... google it.

Thumbs down.

If you paid for Leopard, do what you want.

I love my MB and MBP, my Nano, my Classic, my Iphone, Iwork and all the other "i"'s in my life. But the Apple premium is hard to swallow at times... In the end... Totally worth it.

But things like a 30 inch Cinema display for $1500! C'mon now! Dell has a BETTER monitor out for cheaper.

Ok - Really - I love you Steve. Please don't be mad. I love you Steve. I'm sorry for saying something negative about Apple. I love you Steve.

"OpenMac runs the Vanilla kernel with minimal kext patching." ... Vanilla meaning it's untouched.

Thanks, that's what I thought - minimal is not the same as none. So basically it's a commercialization of the osX86 project.

Apple will have their guts for garters.

i would like to see if they would begin to offer a mid range tower, better capabilities from what it currently has.

to have this would add pressure to have apple do a mid range single chip/ quad core cpu tower, with mid and higher range graphics card. and room for 2 hard drive.

would be great to get this. but of course i believe apple will tank these pseudo mac from future upgrades of OS and more

This is great, exactly the computer I've wanted apple to make: A sub-$1000 computer with an upgradable graphics card.

Hopefully Apple will take a hint and instead of suing them, will upgrade the Mini accordingly.

It kind of has some potential a little bit like when Dell a few years had "Mac OS X" as an OS build option in the system builder.

It doesn't really fuss me but I can see Apple being too impressed.

If you paid for Leopard, do what you want.

Oh no no no, my son! Let's pretend Leopard is a Beatles CD (ironically;)), and you distribute it or say that you made it, etc. The RIAA will be a-knocking on your door before you say "Steve's Blue Jeans and black turtle-neck top."

Same thing for Leopard, you can't just "do what you want" because there is somethings you can't do. You can't distribute it, etc.

Linux is an OS that you can do whatever you want to do to it, because its open-source. ;):apple:

I don't know. I'm sure just as many people may find paying 150% the price for a mac mini with less performance just as insulting

Well... sure OpenMac is $400 and Mac Mini is $600 (which is 150% more), but remember MacMini comes with OSX ($155) and iLife (?) prebundled.

So not so insulting.

I'd like to see Apple let this happen, particularly if they're making $150 on each sale. That's probably as much as they make on the MacMini sale anyway.
(edit: though Apple would have to make a nominal stink, if only to protect themselves from having to support users who can't get Leopard to work properly etc)

Keep in mind that a mac is merely a beautiful product full of bargain-bin components to appeal to the yuppie/hipster market.

You're right, of course. Anything designed with any aesthetic value whatsoever obviously only appeals to yuppies/hipsters. Regular Joes like it ugly, kludgy, and cheap.

Right-o.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

I thought genuine Macs have a special chip on the motherboard which OS X checks for?

If so, how does OS X start on these boxes?

If you're talking about Apple ROMs, didn't they go away something like 10 years ago?

This OpenMac is an interesting idea, especially since I've been wanting a small, quiet, headless Mac for the longest time.

However, I don't care how you try to disguise a big, ugly box, it's still a big, ugly box. Guessing it's also fairly loud, since I can't imagine they're using quality fans at that low price point.

So I'd want to replace my much smaller but almost as ugly (and LOUD) PC for that thing? Right... The mac Mini is well worth the cost when you figure the much smaller form factor, much quieter operation, and aesthetics.

As much as I want a headless Mac, this isn't it.

My iBook is getting a bit long in the tooth, so I hope something else comes up soon. Otherwise, I'll have to pick up a Mini to hold me over a while longer.
