Opera: A solution to a problem no one has.

Problem lots of multiple windows open - Tabbed Browsing

Problem having your favourite sites easy to access - Speed dial or Topsites as Apple called it.

I did a benchmark test on youtube "Shane Dawson's Channel"

Browser Benchmark Test

youtube “Shane Dawson’s channel”

First time
Safari- 3.1 seconds

Google Chrome- 3.3 seconds

Opera- 2.8 seconds

Firefox- 3.0 seconds

Second time

Safari- 3.5 seconds

Google Chrome- 2.9

Opera- 3.4 seconds

Fire Fox- 1.9 seconds

A truly great browser, I miss my opera after switching to safari for cloud syncing... Probably more innovative over the years than all the other browsers put together.

Unfortunately it's not easy to transfer bookmarks from anywhere.

It's easy to transfer the, hard to keep them al synced, and unfortunately a third party solution xmarks, only works for safari and firefox. If opera realize that the way their product doesn't sync with the rest of bookmarks from safari is hurting them, they 'll start making inroads. They are smart guys, they should soon figure it out.

Anyway it's great to see they are still around delivering a great product against the odds.

<html5> video tag is what catches my attention. Come on Firefox, join the party!

Firefox does support HTML5 video, the problem is the HTML5 standard doesn't dictate the codec that must be used.

Therefore Firefox supports the open Ogg Vorbis codec which as an open source browser is the only thing it can do without getting into licensing issues.

Apple supports a codec that involves payment of royalties (H.264 I think it's called). Google chrome supports both codecs but only provides H.264 in youtube hence their HTML5 videos don't work in Firefox.

Presumably the reason youtube is concentrating on H.264 is so they can support the iPhone.

I believe Opera only supports Ogg Vorbis like Firefox.

It's annoying really, we need a standardised codec for HTML5 video before people will start moving from flash.

Aside from the very nifty tab bar (a la Omniweb and NetNewsWire) which I wouldn't mind seeing an option for in Safari, this thing looks like a dog's breakfast.

mmmmm not as good as Safari, for me

Well guys I'm just trying out Opera, and I don't know if the problem is due to my internet connection. But Opera is kind of veeery slow, it took Opera like 30 secs to open Google main page. Maybe is because it is the first time I use it, but Safari is still better, for me.

What About you?

No Universal Binary

No Universal Binary once again means millions of Mac users w/ PPC Macs won't bother checking it out.

Version 10.10 is a UB version yet 10.50 not.

Even for those like me who have an Intel Mac, if you work in a mixed-use environment, you're unlikely to bother trying out software like this since you can't use it across all machines.

Like Google's Chrome, the lack of a UB will ultimately mean failure for another Mac browser.

Mac users keep their Macs far longer than the average PC user keeps his PC.

Even Apple is largely still supporting PowerPC Macs in many ways and continues to with Safari, and even the latest Webkit does, as well as the latest Firefox.

I know I'll get the usual round of boos and "Go Out & Buy a New Mac" ridicule from the snobby INTEL-ONLY crowd, but I'm just telling it like it is.

If you're a PC Switcher, think of it like this, did your company go out and invest or install tons of VISTA-only software that wouldn't run on your XP machines?
Oh nevermind, bad analogy, I keep forgetting nobody bought VISTA.
Bad premise, hehe. :D

Opera Link keeps your bookmarks, speeddial, notes and a few other items synced between your computers that have Opera installed (including phones), just log your browser in and zap everything there and kept in sync.

However this isn't cross browser support.

No Webkit? Yikes!

Opera: A solution to a problem no one has.

Opera has been very innovative.. Apple and Mozilla have copied plenty of features from Opera.

Only the blind would think Webkit is the only solution to a web browser.

How? Aside from it being crashed by a Facebook App in the first 5 minutes I am willing to give it a shot.

Opera would improve their adoption rate by making it dead easy to move from one browser to another, which means not having to redo all of your bookmarks.

There are many solutions, but there is always a *better* solution.

I don't know about all these benchmarks, but with my old fashion timer it takes twice as long to load a page then safari, and loads a page very glitchy

Oh well... atleast i gave it a shot...

very glitchy!!! Im sticking with Safari

Why post when you haven't got the first clue about the history of the Opera browser?

I've never really given Opera much thought and I'm not sure I care to changing from Safari. But I've taken a first look at the Dragonfly debugging tools, and as a web developer, I think it beats the Safari debugging tools!
I need to give it a proper test first thing tomorrow...

It has just crashed though, so maybe not just yet :p

I don't give a sweet damn about Opera's history.

I'm using this non-Webkit mishmash from Opera thinking . . "wow, they've got a great history!"

Not.
