I'd have no problem with this if they could make a browser that doesn't crash. So far they haven't. And judging by OS X Safari, Safari will always be useless on any platform.

As much as I love the interface of Safari, I have to agree. Its always had compatibility and stability issues and Apple doesn't seem to want to do anything about it.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F138 Safari/525.20)

dammit, Apple, what the hell is wrong with having a better browser available for iPhone? I like my touch, but I think it's biggest flaw is Safari. It quits randomly when I'm in the middle of reading something, which is more than annoying. I would welcome another browser-- even something like Opera-- with open arms.
What makes you think this browser doesn't crash?

So you want Apple to not be like M$, by implementing their methods of accepting and supporting anything that comes its way??????

And you thinks its better for them to dictate completely what the user can use? Is there single piece of software you use that isn't made by Apple?

So why haven't they decided to "get rich" before? It's not like this the first time Apple is behaving like this.

Actually they did. A few years ago the EU commission wanted Apple to force to allow other 3rd party hardware vendors to licence the Fairplay DRM so that those vendors could offer iTMS compatible players. Apple only got out of this because they did everything else the commission wanted them to do like offering all songs across the EU for the same price (every country had different prices before).

I think apple really could get into trouble with this kind of behaviour, I see just as much "monopolistic behavior" in apple as in Microsoft, if not more. But because macs had such a low market share they've been flying under the radar. If apple continues this way they will end up having to pay huge fines to the EU or other market regulators.

Well jeez, seeing as I dont own a mac yet, nearly 100% of my software is not apple made.

And what does that have to do with playing by the rules that apple puts on the table? If you cant follow them, NO ONE is making you play the game. If you dont like their policies, switch to another company. It really is as simple as that.

nope, i dont have the funds yet, but im working hard to get it around february, so ill have any perks that come with macworld.

And thanks for not completely dissmissing my views simply because i dont own one currently, as so many people on these forums tend to do.

The App Store has the SDK........

It allows people to get their apps on the device, as long as it complies with their rules. You dont like their rules, no ones making you play the game, you can not publish your app/take it jailbreak/go to a different device.

Do you want Apple to drive itself into the ground or are you is incapable of independent thought as you appear.

Customers don't like having things dictated to them, neither do developers. This goes both way if customers don't like it they don't have to give Apple their hard earned money. 99% of those out there buying macs and iPhones aren't hardcore fanatics like yourself.

we are going off our experience with safari. if there is an alternative, id love to try it and compare. whats wrong with that?
Because people are making Opera to be some browser that doesn't crash, I mean all browsers crash even on desktops, so if they are looking for Opera to come and save them, it won't be it. But I think Apple should still allow alternatives for those who need it.

That's the sort of arrogant attitude Apple have these days now that they are on top of the world. It will be their downfall if they keep telling developers and customers to *iss off. It's our way or the highway". Events will come along and wipe that smug look of superiority off their smirking faces.

Apple is beginning to give MS a run for most obnoxious and beligerant business practices. The sad thing is that it doesn't have to be that way. They are a wildly successful company and don't need to stoop to these tactics. What a farce.

Wow, you guys are really quick to predict apples doom, as you always do when they do things their way.

Seems like consumers are plenty happy to me. Thats all that matters to a company.

Right so they didn't get rich of Apple, what makes you think they'll get rich now? :p

It isn't when international governments fine you hundreds of millions of dollars.

Which is absolutely inevitable if Apple keep this up. It's clearly illegal anti-competitive behaviour.

Apple has been dictating things for awhile but yet they seem to be doing alright, for example I can only use ipods and iphones with itunes and only install Mac OSX on Apple hardware.

yes, lets deal in hypotheticals as our basis for our arguments.

WHEN/IF anticompetive charges are brought up is when you can make these claims. No one has charged apple hundreds of millions of dollars for not allowing opera in.
