1. Apple not only needs the under screen Camera to be up to Apple Standard, but it also needs to feature FaceID, InFra Red, Dot Projector... etc I wonder if the transparent OLED will make FaceID much more difficult?

2. I guess that is why Apple is trying to hide the lens with Black coating ( https://www.macrumors.com/2019/04/18/2019-iphones-12mp-front-cameras-kuo/ ) You wont see the lens even if the Screen become transparent, it will just be... Black.

3. It also makes FaceID difficult to use, every time you need FaceID, the area needs to turn transparent. That likely has some latency involves.

For Apple, hopefully we see that in 2021.

i thought they where going to use an oled panel you can turn off those pixels and have the screen transparent between the camera then. This doesnt seem like it turns off those pixels completely?

The tech is still not fully baked. Hopefully, it can be developed to where image quality is not compromised, but it’s a big step in the right direction.

Yeah, rolling out betas so you can fire a shot across a bigger ships bow is something that you do when you're not the big dog. It doesn't necessarily mean one party is light years ahead and one is way behind. It mostly means that one of them has nothing to lose.

I remember Apple saying it was working on this as far back as ten years ago, “shooting between the pixels.” So they are not behind, it’s just not ready yet to match their standards. But if and when it ever is, you know it will be amazing!

When you have the chance to put the Camera behind the display, maybe put one in the middle of that screen for videocalls. So i can look people in their eyes-

I thought about that as well, but I wonder how would battery be fitted?

May be that is something until MicroLED, where they could have whole Display as a Camera?

Very cool. Cmon Apple...
I'm sure Apple has been working on this tech quietly for a while. Although Oppo states that they've fixed some issues via software, that's not an ideal solution. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple has already tried this and was unhappy with the results. Like Samsung's folding phone, Oppo might release this camera before the tech is really ready. Apple usually prefers to get it right (though they've had their share of goofs too).

Ok, and what smartphone will have this this year? not one...probably after 2 years
Lol. No way it's two years from now, unless you're talking about Apple having it. I'll take a guess it'll be out by next year for sure, probably early to mid year. I mean Samsung has been working on this for what, 2-3 years now?

Nice idea, but they turn off the pixels in front of the camera when it is in use. You'll be looking at someone with a camera for an eye, making them look like a damaged terminator.

So this company is getting props for innovation by announcing a feature that is not ready for a product and Apple is being bashed for falling behind. Let’s see. Apple has patents for just this type of tech and have been considered ways of doing it on Mac laptops since 2004. They just rarely announce things that aren’t ready to ship and have unresolved issues. https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/10/14225872/apple-patent-oled-display-holes-bezel-free-iphone

Good to see. I am sure Apple will implement when the tech matures a bit. Need to see how the quality is first. Ultimately, I don't notice the notch so I am not in any sort of rush for this.

The company has already admitted that putting a camera under the screen will make it harder to match the quality of an unobstructed smartphone camera.

To compensate, however, Oppo said it has developed software algorithms that address haze, glare, and color cast issues, resulting in pictures that are "on par with mainstream devices."

Hah... No thanks.

I never use my front facing camera. I don't take selfies, I don't face time, etc.

I've used the camera in my Xr a few times for quick snaps here and there. It's an OK camera. But give me my digital SLR any day.

To me a camera phone is like having one of those cardboard disposable cameras, or a small Kodak from back in the day. It's not a serious tool for taking photographs.

Sure it is. It's about the person making photographs, not the camera or other gear.

or the "when Apple finally gets around to doing it, it will be so much better" cliche? ;)
Or when companies dig through the archives of Mac Rumors to find patent filings of things Apple has been working to perfect for years and tries to beat them to market with a half baked product to say first, then wait for Apple to release the real product from actual research.

Pretty incredible to release new 2019 iPhones with the huge ugly notch when Oppo or OnePlus 7 Pro
are so much more advanced and 2x cheaper. I got my OnePlus 7 Pro a month ago and it's really really hard
to pick up my iPhone and not to feel sorry for those guys. It just looks and feels so old today.
How is it gonna feel in late 2020?
Yes, of course. A press release and no hands on testing, or even buyers trying it must mean it’s great. A company would never try and make their tech sound better than it is! And I can’t wait for finger prints smeared across the lense. Really? Your Oppo’s are just so far ahead you can’t stand it? Because of Android or because... just because?

Yes it is cool, but let's see how good the quality is before rolling out the "Apple is behind" cliché.

Still good on Oppo - they seem to make decent devices for a good price.

Agreed. Same as the 120 watt charging. It can charge your phone in 13 minutes! And its on what phone...... And what current battery tech can handle that long term...... How about country safety regs will it pass due to heat, etc?.....

All the theoretical tech is very cool pushing tech forward but if it can't be implemented well (look at foldables and the Fold right now) then it means little or something Apple should rush into.

Most of it is from companies like Oppo who dont have $250 billion lying around and need the attention because their profit margins on average $300-400 phones isn't huge. They need to sell sell sell.

The Apple is behind is laughable really. They aren't bleeding edge, no, at least not in public at least. Nor do they have to be. They surely have labs full of bleeding edge tech but that's not their style to release it as a product.

Don't be fooled, it still has a notch.
