The tech is still not fully baked. Hopefully, it can be developed to where image quality is not compromised, but it’s a big step in the right direction.
How did you arrive at that conclusion? Care to share the sample images that you apparently based your point on?

Good on Oppo, though for developing a "first" in front-facing lens technology. I'd have thought something like that would have been an Apple innovation. (wait...did I use "Apple" and "innovation" in the same sentence? My bad...)

In a few years, Apple will show off their perfected version in one of their dog-and-pony shows.

definitely looking forward to the "Next Big Thing" as significant as the original iPhone: getting rid of that horrible notch.
Sorry state of affairs when the biggest technology push is trying to undo Apple's mistakes

The full screen phone has been the dream since the original iPhone. It would have come to this whether Apple had used a notch or not, unless you're trying to say Apple's mistake was putting a forward facing camera on their devices?

Don't be fooled, it still has a notch.

Its a step in the right direction.. but too bad its so visible at this point.. the real purpose of this tech is less about getting rid of the notch, more about getting the camera in the center of the screen. The user could then look at the screen and have their focus on the camera at the same time.

Quality of the camera? We don't care about the quality of the camera. We're used to the front facing camera being a potato. - Anyone with an iMac or Mac laptop :D:p

Seriously though, this is a good first step I think. As Oppo and others continue to develop the tech, the front facing image will get better. Heck Google's current camera voodoo could probably make it even better right now.
In this selfie obsessed culture having a trashy front facing camera will eliminate a large percentage of consumers especially millennials

So much overengineering from so many manufacturers when the obvious solution is to just get rid of the front camera altogether.

Video calling is a convenient feature but who really uses it on a regular basis? And the sooner we kill the pouty selfie the better.
I know a lot of young people who FaceTime more then they make traditional phone calls. You really think it’s smart to alienate a large percentage of consumers

Hmmm, Ok sure it's nice an all..... ;);)

But where are the links for image quality and videos to show how picture zoom or portrait mode???

Cant wait to see how many will say Apple needs to innovate more!!!!! :D:D:eek::eek::apple::apple:

The company has already admitted that putting a camera under the screen will make it harder to match the quality of an unobstructed smartphone camera.
If they need to come out in front and make that statement before even releasing sample shots, it translates as: The image quality is hot garbage.

I'm sure the tech will eventually get there, but this is a first-gen attempt and the results will be as such.

It basically will be like having a yellow film over the lens. The color shift and slight drop in brightness can be compensated but it will never be great.

Nah, you are just pissed the Chinese did it first! If Apple did it, you will say Apple so innovative!
I don't think anybody was pissed that other phones offered face scanning before Apple came out with FaceID because those other, earlier systems weren't as secure as TouchID.

Let me know when it’s something you can actually buy and the image quality isn’t compromised.

The quality isn’t as good, but software will compensate. Thank you Apple for staying away from this.

In fairness, you can’t say that. Apple rarely is the first to release new technology that other competitors have in the past. We don’t know that Apple wouldn’t consider something like this, for future arrangements for the front facing camera, but it doesn’t mean Apple won’t implement it differently where it might produce different results from the competitor, which they’re known to do varying iPhone features.

It’s amazing to me how much time and energy smartphone OEMs are spending on aesthetics. So you have a tiny bezel on the top of the phone for the camera array. Big frigging deal. Honestly the only people who care about bezel-free phones are ADD tech writers and tech nerds who comment at The Verge.
