so will they stop taking pre-orders if they are going to sell out?

i kinda doubt that. it would be to their benefit to keep taking orders and just let everyone know they're back-ordered after the fact. helps them keep the sale instead of giving it away to an apple store or bestbuy.
 
Update: off back order

Just an update, I am now off back order status....whatever the hell that means. I would suspect they will just keep on taking orders, and fill them after launch day. When it says "shipped", then we will likely know if it is "in the mail". I will try to keep this post updated as status changes.

Why would you want to pick it up at the store? AT&T has said they will form two lines at their stores for pre-orders and non-preorders. However, why deal with that? Just have it shipped to you.

I will be waiting in the pre-order line. I want my iPhone 3G S as soon as possible. I'm not going to sit around and wait for fedex to get here.

Well, if order statuses and customer reps are to be believed, people who have it shipped to their house may not get it on the 19th. I guess if you wait in line, you may have a better chance, especially if you pre-order.

That said, I am not sure anyone knows when they are getting their phone :)
 
When did you guys place your orders? I placed mine on the ATT premier site in the evening on Tuesday and I've still got the "We have received your order request, and we expect to begin processing it shortly." message, when I check my credit card nothing has been charged to me yet, should I be seeing a charge if everything is correct at this point? I'm setting this up as a new customer and am trying to move my number over from verizon but 2 days of processing at this point seems a bit excessive. Checking the normal ATT site not the premier doesn't find my order number, I've got a feeling something went wrong.

i placed my order on Tuesday through the Premier site (as a current customer) and that order status link from the email reads the same thing as you see. my wife said the charge showed up on her card the following day, but it hadn't cleared yet.

also, in that email is a web order reference number not the the order number that would work in the normal AT&T order status page. i put in my current phone number and the order shows, but using that order number from email returns no results. have you tried checking the normal AT&T order status site using a home phone number?

the only thing that has me a bit worried is that mine still shows back ordered, though everyone else's seems to have removed the backordered status.

For me, part is I'm moving my wife to my 2G, and want to convert us to a family plan, plus apply my FAN discounts. So I'd like to get that done in store from where I bought it.

It's probably crazy, but I expect the odds of something happening to an individual shipment to my home to be much larger than a batch shipment to a store, particularly if they're to arrive on the 18th. Worst case is I'll probably just have to wait until later that morning to pick it up if something goes wrong. Better than waiting until Monday. But I'd for sure ship to my house before going to an Apple store.
 
I'm striking out everywhere, tried using the phone number that I'm trying to switch over but can't seem to get any results, calling ATT support as of yet has been unsuccessful too but they gave me a few more numbers to try and call, love the run around. At this point I hope to just find out whether or not I've actually got an order in or whether or not I've got to try and scramble to actually get one in after thinking I had one in for 2 days.

I placed my order around 2pm on 6/9 through Direct Fulfillment at my local AT&T store. My order showed up on the website by about 5pm that same day and was/is not on backorder status. They swiped my card at the store but I don't think a charge will appear until the phone actually ships to AT&T. Hope this helps.
 
Finally got through att support and the order still exists, they're just slow starting the process to port the number according to the agent so I think I'm in the clear, it only took calling 3 different numbers so I'll consider it a success :)
 
I ordered mine the 10th at like 5am....I can't wait, this is my first iPhone.

Just to add to the mystery of the "VARIOUS SIM". I am a new ATT customer, I am not porting over a number, and I do not have any mention of a SIM on my order screen.

Yeah, this is the exact case for my wife and me. So confusing...

Hmmm...how can they receive the phones on the 19th and have them delivered on the 19th (Same Day Delivery??). Or are you saying that they will begin delivering them on the 19th -- that is what the rep told me too.
