Got a source for that? When my 2015 MBP keyboard and trackpad failed I was quoted hundreds of £ for a top case replacement. Issue was a £8 flex cable….

No, Apple doesn't share that information. But if you look at Apple's repair costs versus the cost of buying a comparable part elsewhere, there's very little space for profit. For example, Apple charges $279 to replace an iPhone 14 screen; iFixit charges $265 for that part alone.

Your example isn't a great one because Apple doesn't replace just a flex cable, they replace 3/4 of the computer. I think that's obviously overkill, but the price is for a brand new keyboard, trackpad, battery, speakers, aluminum body, etc.

So is Oregon going to cover the damages and costs to repair the phones when these parts don’t work and make the phone worse?

It’s still going to be Apple’s fault somehow when the device fails. At least in the user’s eyes.

Is it the car manufacturers fault when someone uses a 3rd party part and that part fails?

Most people don’t blame the manufacturer when replacement part fails.

If the law is that companies cannot reduce the performance of a device or display misleading warnings for parts that are not properly paired, then there is nothing to prevent Apple changing the software so when a part from a stolen phone is used to repair a phone that the repaired phone displays a warning on the front screen saying that.

Would you want to use a phone that had a permanent onscreen display saying it had been repaired with a stolen phone's parts?

No I wouldn't want to use a phone that kept telling me my screen is not genuine, that's why in some ways I support Apple's efforts to pair parts with devices. Because it makes stolen devices bricks.

So if one of your friends or family members gets their battery replaced at the a kiosk at the mall, you'd rather have all of their communication sent do junk automatically?

Hilarious. But also a display of priorities and character in live, I guess.
Yep, absolutely. I actually check my junk folders occasionally. If I don’t respond in a timely manner, they can leave me a voice message on my phone.

Having it always displayed on the screen would be breaking the law as always on the screen is degraded performance.

Now they can easily make a section in the settings that displays parts not OEM or have been replaced that is fine but having it always on the screen is against the law.

Why would you ever visit China willingly? Why take the chance of disappearing permanently simply because you googled Tibet?
I have visited China. The people are kind, the archeological and historical sites are astonishing, and there are study and training opportunities there you can’t find anywhere else. If they didn’t care for my opinions on Tibet, the CCP, corruption, intellectual property, state-supported international criminal activity, religious persecution, and Taiwanese statehood - and I’m quite sure they wouldn’t - it didn’t bother them enough that they weren’t happy to take my money for three months. All that isn’t to say you don’t have any ground to stand on. I’ve used non-oem parts to repair many Apple devices for friends and family over the years, and it‘s increasingly perilous. But blanket advisories about whole countries…for me, it’s just a baby-with-the-bathwater sort of thing.

Great! Go after Apple for requiring Apple Serialized Parts used in Apple iPhone and Mac Repairs

It sucks.
Everyone wants to make everything about Apple, but this is probably more targeted towards John Deere than anything.

3rd party parts should void warranty. But this is America so I’ll get fixmyphone.com or some other website to try, break it, and then class action Apple for making the phone to hard to repair. I’ll also install some jank software that overheats my phone, and then class action Apple for making their software too good, making it hard for competitors.

Please go look up Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act

I guess if you replace the air filter on your car with a non OEM part then your entire cars warranty is void so if the brakes on your car break your warranty is voided.

If you have your cars oil changes anywhere but at a dealership your warranty is voided for your entire car.

The only part of a warranty that is voided when using a 3rd part is only on that part and any damage said part directly caused. It is on the OEM to prove it.

Trust me you don’t want the MMWA to go away as again I point at the car example as that was the **** being pulled before thevMMWA entered.

I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to go cheap on a very expensive important device such as an iPhone. Seriously, so much of my entire world revolves around this one device. If a repair ruins one’s finance, they have much larger financial problems than iPhone repair. The only problem I would have on the repair side, if Apple stopped repairing. Reliability and quality will never be compromised.

This Right to Repair is going to be a mess because states are already setting their owner versions of it. Right to Repair needs to be one set of rules, one set of standards for EVERY state to follow.

That would require a federal law. It would be better but I'm not sure how much of a mess different state laws could really be. All they have to do is go with the strictest law and they should be fine

Glad I live in Oregon. Now can we move onto vehicles? Because Arcimoto is hiding behind their right to keep stuff a secret. Yet they won’t release a simple parts list for things like brake parts. We had to do an image search to find it. 🙄
